B is for Bouda

Gnolls are great, but big bullies like that seem to deserve demonic, nasty friends. That’s the bouda, a were-hyena from East African legend that is just a blast. In the way of many real legends, they devour children, and they have monstrously horrible personal hygiene.

But as it happens, fleas, vomit, and devouring the innocent are all attributes of a truly maleficent monster. Imagine the evil villain laughs they flea-bitten horrors let loose!

During the 2013 Monarch of the Monsters contest, this submission was as a finalist, designed by Wendall Roy. It’s too horrific and wondrous not to share. Is it too nasty to inflict one of these on players who happen to be parents? Maaaaybe.

Also, share, link, and tweet it--the more backers the Tome of Beasts has, the more extras we can add to everyone's rewards!

Happy Gaming,

Wolfgang and the Kobold Crew

I would recommend giving it the shapechanger tag.

Missed one bit: the stench can be recognized that long. Being poisoned ends after 1d6 rounds (per the text).

On the particular smear question: back to the designer to determine intent. I'd guess just that bouda, though.

      Great feedback, thank you both!

Not sure about the AC change, and likewise not convinced they need a planar origin. The original legends seem to show these as monsters of the mortal world.

The claws... The claws definitely need that fix.

*all of the smears left *by* that particular bouda" I mean.

Neat stuff! About the defiling smear: When it says that the stench remains potent for a week, does that mean the effect lasts that long, or they can just be recognized for that long? And if it does last that long and thus they can have multiple 'active' markings, does the 24 hour immunity to "that particular bouda’s smear" mean "that particular smear that the bouda left" or "all of the smears left that particular bouda?"

I realize this version is still in WIP, here are few observations and comments:

      1) Mephitic claw should have the same attack bonus as bite (prof bonus +3 plus str mod +4) = +7

      2) Change to AC 15 (natural armor)

      3) Senses darkvision 100 ft. This is strange to me, it is usually either 60 ft. or 120ft. I guess it doesn't have to be.

      4) You give it a mix of infernal qualities similar to both a devil and yugoloth without it fitting into either fiend sub-type. A fiend is going to always have a Lower Planes origin. This monster is very reminiscent of the barghest but I'm not seeing the Lower Planes connection other than in the stats.

Indeed! We may need a more cheerful or at least cleanly monster for the next one.

      Defiling smear... ewwwww!
