About

ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is the first card game produced by award-winning game publisher Kobold Press. It’s a quick-fire game for 2 to 4 players where you take the part of the gods of Greek mythology, meddling in the fates and affairs of men and monsters alike for your own amusement.

The goal of ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is to create an Arena of your own Heroes and Monsters, while ensuring that your opponents’ points are kept as low as possible! Play is fast and furious as the epic demigods and heroes of yore clash--fighting against one another and against legendary monsters!

An ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS deck consists of 54 cards with 18 Heroes, 18 Monsters, and 18 Destiny cards. It’s a non-collectible card game, so you only need a single deck to play and most games wrap up in 15-20 minutes, perfect for a quick battle and a glorious victory any time.

The artwork is produced by Kobold Press’ amazing stable of fantasy artists with the same level of quality, variety, and grit you would find in any Kobold Press supplement. We’ve already commissioned the artwork for ten cards by Bryan Syme, and we will add additional artists to finish the remaining cards.

ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is simple to learn and play, but it requires strategy and planning to win. Players start with five cards in their hand. The active player may put either a Hero or Monster card into their play zone, called the Arena, with the goal of gaining as may points as possible from each card’s Legendary Value. Most Heroes and Monsters have special abilities that trigger when played, targeting and destroying a specific card or type of card. Play your cards wisely: no one’s Arena is safe from attack!

The core component of ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is balance. If the balance of your Arena tips too much in favor of your monsters, they will eat your Heroes. Have too many points in your Heroes and they won't be able to refrain from killing your Monsters. Of course, some cards interfere with teams that might force this imbalance!

Play continues around the table until the last card is drawn from the deck, meaning that experienced players can easily play a game in ten to fifteen minutes. At the end of the game, everyone tallies up their points from each round. The player with the highest score is named King of the Gods!

The Cards: ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS has three types of cards: Hero, Monster, and Destiny cards. Monsters and Heroes can fall into one of three classes: Warrior, Wanderer, and Magic. Destiny cards have one-time effects, usually to destroy your opponents' Heroes and Monsters, that can be played at any time.

Monsters and Heroes have a Legendary Value, which indicates the points that card is worth. Destiny cards don't have a Legendary Value or a class, because they represent the fickle hand of the gods interfering with your opponents' Arena!

We’re keeping the Backer Rewards simple, since ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is a straightforward game. Of course, as things progress, we’ll add as many goodies as we can!

Goal #1 is funding the project, of course, but we have several goals beyond that. The first of these is listed below, and reaching it would allow us to create a metal marker for the Throne of Zeus game element.

Kobold Press is a long-standing publisher of source material for games such as 5th Edition D&D, including the Tyranny of Dragons adventures, Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. They also produce a line of hobby books, including the Kobold Guide to Board Game Design

Kobold Press is the publisher of the Midgard setting, with recent projects including Deep Magic, Southlands, and the Advanced Races Compendium, all compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Recently, Kobold Press had an insanely successful Kickstarter for the Tome of Beasts, a monster manual for 5th Edition.

Colm Lundberg has been around the Irish game scene longer than some of its members have been alive, running conventions (founding one), charity auctions, and generally making a nuisance of himself. He has previously been involved in the industry as a volunteer coordinator and continues to demo many games with many hats, but he is considering intervention therapy. He lives in rural Co. Kerry in Ireland where, contrary to tourist signposts, there are no leprechauns. Colm recently designed Love2Hate, released by Green Ronin Publishing. He still does not know how this happened.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge is that ARENA: FURY OF HELLAS is the first card game produced by Kobold Press and considered uncharted territory. However, the team has decades of experience working on card games from other publishers, including the most popular titles in the world. It is anticipated that the main set will be ready for shipping by the end of the year. The sets for the expansion goals have in an advanced stage of pre-production and, if we hit the stretch goals, we can hit the ground running on these. Similarly, we have sourced providers for the remaining stretch goals and can equally proceed with these as soon as we hit them.

Kobold Press are very familiar with crowd-funding and have a very successful history of achieving funding and project delivery.
