I'd like to make a book....and I need your help.
Our world is more polarized than ever. Countless messages each day encourage us to focus on the things that separate us from one another, whether it is religion, politics or ethnicity. In early 2009, I set out to explore the common humanity that connects us through asking the simple question: “What does peace mean to you?”
The results are showcased on a website (www.apeaceofmymind.net) and last year the series was produced as a traveling exhibit.
The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to produce a small press run of a coffee table book to help build awareness for the project and to encourage people to work toward a more peaceful world.
While media outlets and political leaders appear to thrive on a mentality of conflict, there is a tremendous hunger for moderation and reconciliation in our society today. The International Day of Peace last year attracted 200 million people to events worldwide on September 21 and I believe that most people desire a more moderate dialogue than the one found in most media outlets.
A Peace of My Mind provides a venue to encourage those conversations.
A Peace of My Mind explores the meaning of peace through black and white portraits and the personal stories of 52 diverse subjects. Those profiled include Holocaust survivors and the homeless, a Somali refugee and a military chaplain, a pottery instructor and an oil company executive. Artists, volunteers, politicians, and business leaders all share their thoughts and inspiring stories in this book that celebrates our shared experience and our pursuit of peace.
The subjects are ordinary people, with extraordinary stories. They speak of spiritual peace, political peace and inner peace. They describe what peace means to them, how they work toward it in their lives and some of the obstacles they encounter along the way.
These are stories of hope and possibility. When we feel powerless to affect the world around us, these stories assure us that we can make a difference. We all have tremendous control over our own lives and how we choose to relate to others. Seemingly small actions can ripple out into the larger world in much bigger ways than we imagine. A Peace of My Mind shares that message through engaging, uplifting stories.
Through the diverse experiences of these subjects, we find a wealth of wisdom that sheds new light on the meaning of peace. And through a combination of revealing portraits and captivating text, A Peace of My Mind shares a very human story that both engages the mind and moves the heart.
The campaign budget of $6,000 will cover the design and printing costs for a small press run of a 120-page coffee table book.
Each subject will be featured on a 2-page spread, including their B&W portrait, a brief biography and a 250-300 word quote excerpted from their interview.
For as little as $1 you can help produce this book, to help spread the message of peace to a broader audience. Rewards for your support begin at $10.
For as little as $50 you will receive your own signed copy of the book when it is produced.
Free copies of the book will be used to promote the traveling exhibit and to find a traditional publisher. Sales of the book will help support this ongoing project and fund additional print runs of the book in the future.
A successful campaign will truly be a Kickstarter for this project, and help it to become self-sustaining.
