Let me start off by saying thank you for taking the time to look at my Kickstarter! This book was written for my daughter and I hope many other children across the world can benefit from it as well.
My husband and I struggled with infertility for years. After many losses, our hearts were led to adoption. We weren’t sure what God had in store for us, so we chose to pursue another round of IVF at the same time as adoption. Our wish of becoming parents came true when we brought our daughter, Kinsey, home when she was ten months old. A few weeks later we found out Kinsey would be a big sister to two babies!
At the age of four, Kinsey now has two younger sisters and two younger brothers. She has always known she is adopted, but there is still the unknown of how that fact will affect her and other children in similar situations as they grow older. I never want Kinsey to feel like she is less because she is adopted. I want her to know just how special that makes her—how she is our dream come true.
A couple years ago I searched for a picture book that I could read to Kinsey so she could gain a better understanding of what it means to be adopted. It can be a tough concept to grasp for young children, so I wanted to use pictures as a learning tool to help her process the information. When I didn’t find what I was looking for, I started writing the book myself.
And so, Some Babies Are Adopted was born.
The three main points in Some Babies Are Adopted are:
1. All children are different.
2. Adoption is a decision made out of love.
3. Adopted babies are a blessing.
Adoption is such a wonderful blessing for so many birth moms and adoptive families around the world. This book is intended to portray the positive aspect of adoption. Being adopted is nothing to be ashamed of, but something to be celebrated! I believe one of the ways we can show support for adoption is by being open and sharing our adoption stories with each other.
With every single adoption, a birth mother exists. To carry on the positive theme for this book, it will teach children that adoption was not an easy decision for the birth mother, but required prayer and months of searching to find a loving family for her baby.
I intentionally used broad language in Some Babies Are Adopted because I want this book to be for adopted children and their friends, cousins, and siblings.
This book began as something I could read to my daughter to teach her about where she came from, but then I realized there are many kids and parents in our same position who would also benefit from Some Babies Are Adopted. I decided to do a Kickstarter so I could put a quality product in the hands of children everywhere.
There are various reward options available, whether you want to support the project because you believe in it or you want the finished product. If you choose the "Be In the Book" reward, you can send in a picture of an adopted child to be illustrated in Some Babies Are Adopted!
The money from this project will be used for publishing the book, the cost of the illustrator, and Kickstarter fees.
Countless couples suffer from infertility and are left with very expensive options to grow their family. I want to help some of these people out! Once the project is funded I plan to help individual families fund their adoptions by using some of the proceeds from this book.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for the book will be to complete the final illustration. This cannot be done until the Kickstarter is funded because illustrating a child in the book is one of the reward options. For those who have chosen the "Be In the Book" reward, I will then have to collect a picture from them before starting on the illustration.
It may also take time to ensure all pages are perfect and in the correct format for the publisher, but this step should be mostly completed before the project has been funded.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
