About this project
We are excited to announce NEW cards that expand the game play of both the Backpacking and the Special Edition of The Appalachian Trail Game. The ME-GA Expansion Set includes two distinct decks -- The Thru-Hiker Deck and the A.T. Communities Deck. These two decks combine for 25O new cards and mirror the dual backpacking experience of spending time in the backcountry and in A.T. Communities along the way. If you are new to the game, scroll down and check out the How to Play Video!
Our initial funding goal of $20,000 will allow us to take the ME-GA Expansion Set to production. Kickstarter backers will be first to receive the new cards, before they are available via our online store or shipped to wholesale vendors.
- 2-4 Players OR Use teams with larger groups
- Expansion Set geared towards ages 12 +
- Takes about 3O-45 minutes to play
The ME-GA Expansion Set REQUIRES that you have either the Appalachian Trail Backpacking Edition or Special Edition game in order to play. If you don't already have a copy of one of these games, check out the reward levels to the right that include one or both versions of the game.
To play with the ME-GA Expansion Set...

- Shuffle the NEW Chance cards in with your existing Chance cards
- Get your GA-ME on!
Test your knowledge about hiking, backpacking, wildlife, and The Appalachian Trail as you complete a thru hike on America’s most treasured footpath!
Make your way along the A.T. as you successfully answer questions, identify trail wildlife, and add points to your trail journal. Use the gear in your pack to help navigate through perilous situations that arise, like poison ivy, a snowstorm, or getting lost! Go ultralight, help a hiking club, experience Trail Karma, or head to the nearest A.T. Community for a hot shower and soft bed.
As a way to thank backers for helping to achieve and exceed our goal, we have created Stretch Goals that give our backers an opportunity to create additional cards that will be included in the new expansion decks! We know that some of you have a lot of A.T. miles under your belt, and want to hear YOUR ideas for new challenge questions and Chance scenarios.
Here’s how it works:
- Post your idea for a new card to The Appalachian Trail Game FB page as a comment, with the title, ME-GA CARD IDEA. It can be a question, a photo identification card of a place, plant or animal, or a Chance scenario. If it’s a photo identification question, please include the photo in your post. Please include your trail name with your post ( so we can give you credit on the card, of course!).
- For every $5000 we raise beyond our initial goal, we will select one new card submission and create a new card to be included in the new ME-GA Expansion Set.
- We will announce the selected card and its author here on the Kickstarter campaign page and on our FB Page.
TO RECEIVE ADD-ON ITEMS, please click on the "Manage your pledge" button on the top right corner of this page. Increase your total pledged amount to include any add-ons you would like to receive. All Add-on prices include additional shipping costs. After the campaign is completed, you will be sent a backer survey where you will inform us which add-ons you have added in your order. As a reminder, you must pledge at the ME-GA Hiker Level or above to be eligible for the inclusion of add-ons to your pledge.
Developing partnerships and giving back to the Trail and to trail stewardship organizations is the heart and soul of our company. We donate a portion of all sales to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to support their important work, and feature 2-3 organizations each year through our Giving Back Campaign, where a portion of our sales during a particular time period is donated to a trail stewardship organization.
This tradition of collaboration continues with the ME-GA Expansion Set, as we bring 2 new groups into the fold: the Appalachian Long Distance Hiking Association (better known as ALDHA) and the A.T. Communities Program of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
We want to thank ALDHA for their contributions to the Thru-Hiker Deck, and their willingness to share their thru-hiking wisdom with us as we designed this new deck. If you aren’t familiar with ALDHA, check them out – they are fantastic friends and stewards of the A.T. and we are grateful for their work!
We also want to thank the A.T. Communities Program and their fantastic Director, Julie Judkins for their ongoing partnership and friendship. As any long-distance hiker knows, the importance of trail communities cannot be understated. These communities anchor the Trail and provide critical services to hikers of all kinds -- especially those embarking on an extended journey. There are currently 41 designated A.T. Communities in the ATC’s Program, and we want to extend a huge THANK YOU to them for sending us questions related to their community as contributions to the A.T. Communities Deck. We will donate a portion of sales from the MEGA Expansion Set to the A.T. Communities Program to support the network of A.T. communities that have critical roles in protecting the A.T. and enhancing the A.T. visitor's experience.
We Love this game! We have learned a lot and we hope to be on the AT within the next couple of years! It has a great potential to expand and everyone can play it! Submitted by Jen on April 16, 2O17
A fun little game! It's compact, easy to learn, and fun for all ages. We don't have kids, so we usually play with all adults, but we have played with school-age kids and had fun as well. Lots to learn! Submitted by Linds on March 24, 2O17
Great game! My kids, 12 and 7, love playing it and trying to stump each other with the animal, plants, and questions from the challenge cards. It's fun and educational. Submitted by Matt on April 26, 2O16
I've had a lot of fun sharing it with non-hikers and encouraging them to take up hiking and backpacking! Submitted by J.L on September 16, 2O15
The more bonus packs the cooler it will be. Every time I sit down on a campout some of the boys want me to play “that trail game” with them. Submitted by Ben on April 12, 2015
I want to express my gratitude. My 12 year old daughter LOVES playing this game and I can’t believe how much hiking/camping/AT lore/ knowledge she has picked up. She usually hates to read and often is inattentive to instruction and I adore how this game is really getting her camping knowledge up. Submitted by Julie on March 3, 2015
We received our copy of the Appalachian Trail Game here in Germany, today. Love it! It reminds us of the great experience on the AT!! Submitted on December 26, 2014
Outdoor Edutainment, LLC is a small, two-person company based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC. Mark Hanf, our founder, is a middle school math and science teacher, eagle scout, and game designer whose home sits just over a mile from the A.T. in Madison County, NC. Kristin Peppel brings a background in conservation planning, trail community development, and environmental education. Kristin worked closely with the ATC to design the current A.T. Community Program and has spent countless hours hiking on the A.T.
The Appalachian Trail Game was born on one of Mark's regular hikes between Max Patch and Hot Springs, NC after passing by Walnut Mountain shelter. It had been completely trashed, and after cleaning up the site and packing up the trash, he began envisioning a fun and engaging way to teach people about responsible trail ethics. Mark transformed his idea into a board game, and two years later, thanks to a small grant awarded through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's (ATC) License Plate grant program, we were able to develop the prototype game.
A small team of talented educators, artists, conservationists and backpackers formed to turn that prototype into a fully realized product, The Appalachian Trail Game. In August of 2014, we launched the game on Kicktstarter and were overjoyed with the response. We achieved our goal in the first 48 hours, and by the end of the campaign, we were over-funded by almost 600%. Since that time, we have sold over 15,000 copies and donated over 300 games to non-profit organizations, schools, and volunteer hiking clubs. The game has received rave reviews by teachers, hikers, A.T. volunteers, and players of all ages.
In 2015, we established new partnerships with Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and the American Hiking Society to help create the new content for the Special Edition version of the game. We launched this game via a second successful Kickstarter campaign in August of that same year. We are proud to be part of the #ProtectYourTrail campaign that integrates various strategies to educate new hikers about Leave No Trace principles and ways to get involved with volunteer trail clubs.
Risks and challenges
At Outdoor Edutainment, LLC we are committed to producing high quality products and refuse to take any shortcuts that impede this commitment. Having run 2 successful Kickstarter campaigns, (The Appalachian Trail Game - Backpacking Edition and the Special Edition), we know much better how avoid trouble and navigate the complexities of production, shipping and working within the Kickstarter platform. We are confident that these changes will ensure that all customers get their rewards promptly and on or before the projected date of October 15, 2017
Of course, we recognize that unforeseen manufacturing problems can arise. If a manufacturing problem should occur, we are confident in our abilities to work through these issues to get rewards out to all of our backers by the specified date. In the highly unlikely event that we are not able to deliver the game for some unforeseeable, unfathomable reason, we will refund all pledges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
