Frequently Asked Questions
Great question! The two games are compatible, and cards can be used interchangeable between the backpacking version and the new special edition. Game play is essentially the same in both games and they share the same gear cards.
How they differ…
They each have unique sets of challenge and chance cards. The Special Edition has more total cards (2OO compared to 5O in the backpacking version) and 5O more challenge cards (125 compared to 75 in the backpacking version) than the Backpacking Version. It also has new kinds of Chance cards, including Zero Day cards, Trail Karma cards, and Leave No Trace cards, that are not included in the backpacking version.
The backpacking version is the compact, “travel-friendly” version, whereas the new Special Edition is better suited for the kitchen table.
Game Boards. The super simple backpacking version includes a fold-up weatherproof map that also has information about the 31 A.T. Volunteer Hiking Clubs, the National Parks of the A.T., the 1 Essential Items for every hike, and trail first aid resources. The new Special Edition has a hard-back, table-top game board an does not include the supplemental information provided in the backpacking version.
Game Pieces. The Special Edition includes 4 game pieces. Wooden game pieces will be provided for Kickstarter backers and cardboard game pieces on plastic stands will be included for all games sold after the campaign ends. The Backpacking version does not include game pieces (players are asked to find their own stone, penny, flower, etc.).
Thanks to our partners, including The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, and the American Hiking Society, the Special Edition includes information in the new game that directly connect players to national and trail stewardship organizations and ways to get involved in trail protection efforts.Last updated:

OBJECT OF THE GAME
Create your own adventure on the Appalachian Trail as you hike your way along the nearly 2,200 mile footpath. Collect points as you correctly answer trivia questions, identify plants and animals, and use the gear in your pack to help navigate through perilous situations that arise! The game ends when the first player completes a Thru Hike--arriving at either Katahdin or Springer Mountain. All players then tally the points from their Trail Journal cards and the player with the most points is the Winner!
GAME SET UP
Each player selects a game piece and chooses a trail name.
All players begin their hike together. For a northbound hike, place all game pieces on the Springer Mountain, GA circle at the bottom of the Map. Place the THRU HIKE card at the Katahdin circle at the top of the map. For a southbound hike, reverse these.
Lay all GEAR cards (orange) down face up on a flat surface. Players choose pieces of gear for their backpack by taking turns selecting 1 gear card until all gear has been distributed. This set of gear makes up each player’s backpack. GEAR cards are placed on the table so they are visible to other players.
Shuffle the Trail Journal CHANCE cards (blue) and place them on the board.
Shuffle the Trail Journal CHALLENGE Cards (green) and deal 5 to each player or team, face down. Each player/team holds the cards in their hands, so they are not visible to other players. Place the remaining cards on the CHALLENGE space on the Map.
Advance 1 space at the beginning of every turn, (unless otherwise instructed to NOT ADVANCE or LOSE A TURN.) The youngest player goes first and play continues clockwise.
Land on a green space...choose another player to read you a Challenge card. Answer correctly and add the card and points to your personal Trail Journal! Answer incorrectly and the asking player gets the points and adds the card to their personal trail journal!
Land on a blue space...draw a CHANCE card and follow its instructions.
Land on a brown space…swap gear with the player/team of your choice! Use the GEAR cards in your pack and TRAIL KARMA cards to cancel the effects of CHANCE cards.
Continue play until a Hiker completes the A.T. and earns the THRU HIKE card. All players then tally the points in their Trail Journal stack. The player with the most points wins!Last updated:
Do you know the common name of plant and animals that live along the Appalachian Trail? Do you know the proper gear to carry along your hike or the history of the Trail? Answer a question correctly, and add points and experiences to your Trail Journal. Answer a question incorrectly and the player who challenges you gets the points!Last updated:
Your hike along the Appalachian Trail will bring about all kinds of interesting situations! CHANCE cards may present obstacles like Poison Ivy or Hypothermia that slow your pace or require a visit to the nearest AT. Community. Having the right GEAR card can save the day and help to avoid delays or emergency situations! There may also be opportunities for exploring A.T. Communities, or to quicken your pace by going ultralight or getting in shape.
Trail Karma Chance Cards: Help an injured hiker or assist a volunteer trail crew in repairing a shelter and gain Trail Karma! Use these cards to get out of a perilous situation by that occurs during your hike. Hikers choose when to play these cards, which cancel out the effects of any CHANCE card. After the card is played once, it is returned to the bottom of the CHALLENGE card stack.
Zero Day Chance Cards: Does your body and mind need a break from the trail? Zero day cards provides opportunities for rest and relaxation off the trail and to gain extra points. If you draw a zero day card, you may choose to take the zero day add the card (and points) to your trail journal. If you do, you must also forego your next turn as you take a day off the trail. If you choose to decline the zero day, return the card is returned to the bottom of the pile and you advance next turn as usual.Last updated:
The new cards from the Special Edition Game are currently only available in the packaged game. Apart from the new cards, we also made changes to the game board that simplify the play spaces and enhance game play. These changes are also reflected in the game board/map in all of the Backpacking Version games that are now available. We are so excited about the game package as a whole, that we have decided to make the components only available by purchasing the Special Edition game.
We hope to produce stand alone expansion decks of cards at some point in the near future. As a user, we understand that it’s more convenient and cost effective to purchase the new cards without the other components. We asked many of our customers for the specific themes they’d like to see in new challenge cards, and heard that Survival Skills, National Parks, Ecology, Going Ultralight, Birds, and Rare and Endangered Species were all identified as favorites. Our vision is to have a series of stand-alone themed expansion decks of cards available for sale in the near future. Our stretch goals reflect the beginnings of these. Please bear with us -- we’ll get there!Last updated:
