THANK YOU for coming to check out The Appalachian Trail Game Special Edition! This game has been a labor of love for us and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you all!
We know how much many of you love to strap on your packs and get out on a trail! We developed this game for YOU and for future hikers and backpackers who are still getting their feet wet ( literally on some cases!). For those times when you can't be ON a trail, you can still get your A.T. Ga-Me on with The Appalachian Trail Game!
YOUR SUPPORT will allow us to produce the Special Edition game and a second edition of the the Backpacking Edition (the 1st game). We also want to produce additional cards and themed expansion sets. Some suggested ideas are Birds on the A.T., Survival skills, Wilderness first aid, Ecology, A.T.state-specific sets, and Going Ultralight. As backers, your pledges can help us to do this!! Your pledge also helps to support the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and their efforts to protect and manage the A.T.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!! Hope to see YOU on the trail!
SHARE YOUR IDEAS FOR NEW CARDS IN COMMENTS SECTION! Ideas can include scenarios that you've encountered while hiking or backpacking OR trivia questions than can be new Challenge cards! Our new Special Edition includes many new cards that came from ideas submitted by YOU!
Who is Outdoor Edutainment? Our company is a two-person operation based in Asheville, NC. Mark Hanf, our founder, is a middle school teacher, eagle scout, and game designer whose home sits just over a mile from the A.T. in Madison County, NC. Kristin Peppel (the other half) brings a background in conservation planning, trail community development, environmental education and coaching. Both avid backpackers and hikers, our company was born out of a love for being out in wild nature and a desire to inspire and encourage others to create their own outdoor adventures!
Where did the idea for this game come from? The idea for The Appalachian Trail Game was born during a hike on the A.T. between Max Patch and Hot Springs, NC. Mark, the original game designer, came upon a shelter that had been completely trashed! After cleaning up the site and packing out the trash out, he began to envision a fun and engaging board game that taught best practices while hiking and fostered an appreciation of the Great Outdoors. Two years later, thanks to a small grant awarded through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's (ATC) License Plate grant program, the game began to take shape.
A small team of talented educators, artists, conservationists and backpackers formed to turn that prototype into a fully realized product. Just over one year ago, we launched The Appalachian Trail Game on Kicktstarter and were overjoyed with the response. We achieved our goal in the first 48 hours, and by the end of the campaign, we were over-funded by almost 6OO%. Since that time, we have sold over 5,OOO copies and donated over 15O copies to non-profit organizations, schools, and volunteer hiking clubs. The game has received rave reviews by teachers, hikers, A.T. volunteers, and players of all ages, and we are inundated with requests for new questions.
What's new this year? This year in addition to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, we have partnered with Leave No Trace and the American Hiking Society to create the new content. The creative synergy in this Special Edition is strong. Recently we have also forged new partnerships with Broad Green Pictures and a range of other national non-profits to help promote best practices on the trail. As more people embark on their own A.T. adventures, trail management and resource protection becomes more important. We are proud to be part of the #ProtectYourTrail campaign that integrates various strategies to educate new hikers about Leave No Trace principles and ways to get involved with volunteer trail clubs.
We hope that this is just the beginning of a range of educational games and expansion sets that continue to allow people to play and learn! Thank you for helping us to make that dream possible and thank you for protecting the Appalachian Trail, a natural treasure!
Robert Redford encourages everyone to learn LEAVE NO TRACE principles.
A WALK IN THE WOODS - In this comedy adventure, Robert Redford & Nick Nolte star as old friends who make the improbable decision to hike the 2,190–mile Appalachian Trail, and that’s when the fun begins. Based on Bill Bryson’s bestseller, the movie co-stars Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman & Kristen Schaal. In theaters everywhere September 2.
Risks and challenges
At Outdoor Edutainment, LLC we are committed to producing high quality products and we will not take any shortcuts that impede this commitment. Having Kickstarted The Appalachian Trail Backpacking Version game last year, we know much better how avoid trouble and navigate the complexities of production, shipping and working within the Kickstarter platform. We've made this campaign simpler, with fewer pledge levels . Fewer options means we can better ensure we're executing perfectly on the stuff we really want to do well.
We also learned last year how challenging it can be to assemble and ship over 12OO games in 2 weeks out a basement! This time around we are working with a national distributor, Education Outdoors, who is handling all of our warehousing, shipping, and related customer service needs. All of the components will be manufactured at the same facility this year so that games are efficiently assembled and shipped without delays. We are confident that these changes will ensure that all customers get their rewards promptly and on or before the projected date of November 25.
As ever, unforeseen manufacturing problems can arise. If a manufacturing problem should arise, we are confident in our abilities to work through these issues to get rewards out to all of our backers by the specified date. In the highly unlikely event that we are not able to deliver the game for some unforeseeable, unfathomable reason, we will refund all pledges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
