About

Imagine growing up in outright poverty. Having the desire and ability to dance. But no access to formal competitions where they maybe 'noticed' and helped to grow. With out this project they have no way to explore their abilities or boundaries. No future, no hope of any change. The heartbreak of having DANCE as a part of your SOUL, but no way to really grow in life beyond watching a youtube dance to learn new ideas and forms.

Well welcome to reality for these kids. Most are openly gay, range from 14 to 18 in age and full of energy and ready to take it to the next level. The Gay Street Kids Dance Company is 'here' but has no where to go. We are trying to change that with YOUR help. This project, if funded, will allow the dance company to actually travel to Manila for formal dance competitions. The higher the level funded, the more kids can participate.

As of now, these very talented kids are out in a remote area and can not participate in the bigger contests and competitions or advance to the national levels. The funding will permit as many as 25 kids to travel to Manila where if they do well, will open up opportunities for them at a much higher level.

It is very frustrating to have the talent but can not showcase that talent without any outside assistance. This current project to get The Gay Street Kids Dance Company to Manila is a huge step for them that they never dreamed possible. Target date is November 20th to the 25th to attend the Manila Salsa Congress 2013. This project really will make a huge difference in the lives of these dancers by allowing them to not only compete on a much greater level, but also to get the confidence in leaving their rural area and growing into and belonging to the mainstream dance industry that exists outside their little part of the world.

They dance ball room, salsa, hip hop and modern dance! This trip to Manila is the first step in taking things to the next level. The Gay Street Kids Dance Company is striving to become a well recognized dance company on the national level in the Philippines. This trip to Manila is a great opportunity for them to show their 'stuff' out in front and proudly!

Risks and challenges

Catbalogan in the Philippines is a true 3rd world location with many challenges and limits of services available. Once funded, these dancers will travel to Manila which is a 24 hr bus trip. In Manila they will undergo an intensive dance training to bring out their strengths and show them the possibilities that are available once they reach a certain level. Challenges in transportation, housing and general support for the dance company to become self sufficient and then to GROW. All are manageable with funding.

Challenges are to remain true to the simple format of volunteering their time and efforts to help younger and less trained dancers. As these kids are living in poverty, they have nothing to donate but time and effort. We are hoping the general dance community in the US sees the benefit of our project ideas and fund the project which in turn opens doors to opportunity that without your help, may never exist for these kids. We are ready to go! Just need the funding.
