About this project
This spring I will be directing and editing an environmentally-themed music video featuring a new song by legendary artist/activist and Founder/Artistic Director of Great Leap, Nobuko Miyamoto, entitled MOTTAINAI. This will be the second in a series of environmental music videos we are producing.
Mottainai is a traditional Japanese term which roughly translates as, "It's a shame to waste". This music video will use the mottainai concept to challenge the throw-away/disposable lifestyle which has become so ingrained in us.
Our hope is that this video, released through as many media networks and channels as possible, will shine a light on the fact that many traditional cultures contain useful practices and philosophies when it comes to caring for the planet, and it's time to recognize and acknowledge the wisdom of our forebears. MOTTAINAI calls for a return to ancestral knowledge within a contemporary context, in the interest of better caring for the world we live in.
We hope that MOTTAINAI will encourage people to think twice about the throw-away mentality and make different choices that are supportive of a sustainable lifestyle.
Stylistically, the video will incorporate a generous sense of humor in communicating its message. I want it to have a strong visual impact and make its point as clearly as possible, while still having a playful design aesthetic and a family-friendly feel.
We are producing MOTTAINAI in HD widescreen format with a two-day location shoot planned for mid-April in L.A. & Santa Monica. We will have the premiere public screening on June 5th as part of the Earth Day celebration at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. At the same time we plan to post it online via youtube and other internet hosts.
We are calling on many of our artistic colleagues and the Great Leap family of friends to work on this project and keep our budget as low as possible. We are fund-raising through a direct ask campaign, applying for grants, and now we are hoping that YOU will help support us through Kickstarter!
Your funds will be used for ALL aspects of production; i.e. technical crew, lighting equipment rental, production staff, props, costumes, rental fees for shooting locations, and food for all our volunteers.
Thanks for your attention, and I hope you will consider supporting this very worthy project!
