We have the recipes. We have the love and boundless energy to churn out intriguing, delicious snacks for the whole of Baltimore and beyond. We even have found our very own kitchen space. What then, you may ask, could we possibly need?
Well, dear snackers… in a word: ovens.
It might surprise you to know that all our snacks are made in just one double stack oven, 10 trays at a time. Even more surprising, this past year the two of us have been midnight bakers in a soup kitchen – using a commercial space at night that is designed to produce gallons of soup rather than dozens of snacks.
Moving into our new kitchen space will be a huge step forward for us. Yet, marvelous as it is, our new kitchen is missing these highly important ovens and several other essential pieces of equipment. So here we are, asking you to support us in raising $12,000 to outfit our very own commercial bakery.
By having our own space where we can bake at all hours of the day and night, Kinderhook will be able to go so many new places. We’ll finally launch our online store and subscription snacking service for all you distant snackers. Corporate snacking will commence with frequent snack deliveries to offices throughout the Baltimore/DC metro area. We’ll expand to provide snacks for even more retail stores in the Mid-Atlantic and be able to cater more weddings, bridal showers, baby showers and events with customized snacking experiences. Can you imagine?!
In just a little over a year, we have grown our business from a small farmers market stand to a thriving business with our products in 10 wholesale locations throughout Baltimore. We’ve experienced many moments of sheer giddiness that our snacks are so adored in the past year. In January, our snacks were featured in Baltimore Magazine after an editor picked them up at a locally owned grocery store. We’ve quickly doubled the amount of wholesale locations to include some of our very favorite retail stores in the city and even the Baltimore Museum of Art! We’ve had overwhelmingly positive receptions at events like the Craft Mafia’s Holiday Heap and Maryland Film Fest. We were thrilled with the chance to also participate in worthy causes like the Urban Farm Alliance fundraising dinner - the Farm Feast - and to be able to share in special moments like weddings and baby showers.
HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED:
Funds raised will go towards equipment ranging from the glamorous to mundane: convection ovens, commercial mixers, a heat sealer to ensure ultimate freshness and a burst of flavor when you open a package of our snacks, and even the mop and bucket we'll need to clean the floor. We are thrilled to be growing to meet the demand for delicious and innovative snacks from so many enthusiastic snackers and appreciate your support.
Risks and challenges
We are taking a big bite, we know. Launching our own kitchen space and ramping up production will no doubt come with challenges, set backs and risks. However, in the year that we have been growing our business we have learned that everything doesn’t always go as planned. Yet, we have risen to the occasion each time with teamwork, creative problem solving and an incredible work ethic.
Tripling the amount of wholesale locations and launching new distribution methods will, of course, require many hours of planning. Because we have grown this business from the ground up, we are intimately familiar with what it takes to increase our production capacity and what the learning curve will be for new employees. We’ve already started on training guides for future snack-makers! We are also incredibly fortunate to have mentors ranging from growth management consultants, successful small-batch food producers and sales + marketing professionals, who are there to provide us with insight, advice and guidance when we need it most.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
