"Time After" follows Sunita Pandya and Vivek Fernando, a Brooklyn couple who are trying to decide on whether to have a family while pursuing their careers. A raucous dinner party with their friends, John, Antoinette, Silva and Tamara lead Sunita and Vivek to have the conversation they've been putting off. "Time After" is about that moment when one decision changes the course of your life irrevocably.
Thanks for reading about my project. "Time After" is a short film inspired by the many conversations I’ve had with my wife and friends about what it means to start a family and still have a career. My wife and I are artists who live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, and sometimes we feel like we are barely able to make ends meet. But we also live in Brooklyn, where it seems like EVERYONE has kids. And often we feel guilt and pressure to keep up.
We have friends whose children are the most important part of their lives but we also have friends whose careers are at the center of their lives. Sometimes it feels like a career is more important than having children period and sometimes it doesn't. I certainly have friends who value their career more than having a child. And why shouldn't they? It hasn't been easy for us to balance having a family with all of our goals and aspirations. What if things had turned out differently?
I haven't seen a film that tries to capture the complexity of this issue sufficiently, and certainly not from the perspective of people of color. I feel compelled to make a movie that puts the questions that my wife and I are grappling with out there. I still don't know what my answers are, but I feel that just asking them has been incredibly illuminating, and I hope "Time After" will be as complex as the journey my wife and I have been on and are still undertaking.
The script is done. The production team is assembled. The actors are cast and we’re planning to shoot the movie in September of this year. We need to raise $15,000 to make this short film and we need you to help us make our goal. The money will pay for everything from camera equipment, lighting packages, production crew, actors, travel expenses, post-production costs and publicity. And with your help, we can make this movie and show it to the world!
Deepa Purohit will play the role of Sunita Pandya

Ian Lassiter will play the role of Silva
Angel Desai will play the role of Tamara
Jeff Pagliano will play the role of John
Annamarie Benedict will play the role of Emily
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk I face is that "Time After" will be my first short film and the first film project I've directed since the award winning feature I did in college many moons ago. Even though I make my living as an actor these days, I have always loved movies and when I first graduated from college I was actually planning on being a filmmaker (all of the donor rewards are named after some of my favorite films!). I interned at Spike Lee's production company, 40 Acres and a Mule, in his development department the summer before I graduated from college. It's there that I really learned about screenwriting and film development. After graduating from college, I worked as a production assistant on Spike's movie "Summer of Sam" in the locations department and then I worked on Milos Forman's movie about Andy Kaufman, "Man on the Moon", with Jim Carrey. These experiences really gave me an incredible insight into the nuts and bolts of the moviemaking process, but also made me fall in love with being on the other side of the camera as an actor!
Having been a working actor for many years, the story of "Time After" has inspired in me a passion to get back to my first love, filmmaking and I know my early experiences will serve me well on this journey. Plus, as an actor who has been in numerous films and TV shows, I really know how to work with actors on a set and get the best performance from them.
I have also surrounded myself with an amazing production team to help me tackle my first short film. Jon Reitzes (www.jonreitzes.com), who has tons of production experience and works full time as a director and editor will be co-directing the film with me and will help guide me through the technical aspects of filming as well as being the editor of the film.
Christopher Vernale (www.cpvernale.com) is our awesome Director of Photography who has an amazing eye and understands exactly the look I'm going for on screen. The look of "Time After" is inspired by the french film "Rust and Bone" with Marion Cotillard and directed by Jacques Audiard. The film is full of beautiful intimate moments and I want "Time After" to bring the audience into the character's life the same way "Rust and Bone" does.
I also have great producers on board, Jeff Pagliano, who worked on Robert Zemeckis' film Contact, and who knows how to keep a budget balanced! And Matt Schneider, who has a deep background in film production and entertainment law and who is my legal eagle!
And finally, I have a dedicated and incredibly talented group of actors who I actually wrote the roles in the film for and who understand exactly what the film is about and are passionate about their roles. I know, surrounding myself with such a great group of people will ensure the success of this very personal film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
