3 Reasons 10K is SO Important
If we hit our $10K stetch goal, we'll have enough to record all six songs on our EP. Here are three reasons why that's so important...
1. INDUSTRY: Six songs is the industry standard for EPs. That means our EP, and therefore the band, will be taken seriously by the industry professionals who are in a position to book us on tours, and market & distribute our music to an even wider audience.
2. STORY: With a all six songs we can share the full story of our EP with fans. Yes! Our EP has a story! No spoilers ;) but here's the teaser: a girl on summer break who has a crush, becomes lovesick, gets her heart broken, only to rediscover herself as the rockstar she truly is.
3. SOUND: 10K will allow us to record and release all of the music we've written and perfected over many months of practice and live performances - so current and future fans can hear it in its FULLEST expression. Each song has it's own unique vibe, and represents a different, distinct aspect of our sound, and its influences - from doo-wop to surf to punk...girly-punk.
Our Kickstarter Show was a smash! Watch a highlight reel below!

Our stretch goal is $10,000
...which will allow us to accomplish our dream project, a 6-song EP.
Our official goal is $5,000
...which will allow us to record two songs. Cost breakdowns are below, but first let me tell you more about the band and project!
How it all Started
Crazy as it may sound, when I was a kid, I thought rock n' roll was just for boys. For Christmas when I was 7, my big brother got an electric guitar, and I got...drum roll, please...a play kitchen. Now, don't get me wrong, folks, I loved my play kitchen. I was the Gordon Ramsey of plastic hot dogs. But I also (secretly) wanted my brother's beautiful black & white stratocaster.
Through the years as a singer-songwriter, I learned to accompany myself on piano and acoustic guitar, which I thought were more "appropriate" for a girl, but something just felt off. It wasn't until I was 25 and had to borrow my boyfriend's electric guitar that I ever even picked one up. And when I did, something clicked.
But as I started to write my favorite genre, punk rock, I struggled because I thought the subject matter had to be angry and aggressive. I assumed I had to bury my impulse to write about "girly" things - like crushes, the color pink, and getting my hair bleached - because it wasn't "punk" enough.
Then one day I wrote a punk song that was also girly - about a secret crush. That's when it hit me: I had accepted all of these bogus stereotypes - that rock n' roll was just for boys, that punk couldn't be girly - without questioning or challenging them.
That's when I decided to stop conforming to who I thought I was supposed to be...and be the one & only thing I could be: unapologetically myself. And what's more punk rock than that?
I started to write music that was both girly and punk, because I am both. And from that came Helaine and the Hurricanes. Now we've set out to make our first studio EP, but to do that we need your help.
So, I have one question for you...
Do you want to see how badass girly-punk can be?

About the EP
After playing gigs across Los Angeles for the last year, fine tuning our band's "special sauce," we are now ready to share it with all of you! To accomplish our dream project of a six-song EP, we need a total of $10,000, which we've set as our stretch goal. Our official goal is $5,000, which will allow us to record two songs. (Cost breakdowns, below.)
Over the course of six songs, the EP follows the story of a girl on summer break who has a crush, gets her heart broken and becomes lovesick, only to rediscover herself as the rockstar she truly is.
Musically, the songs are influenced by where we're from - Hollywood, CA. Nowhere else is as glossy and trashy at the same time, and that oxymoron frames our sound, which I call "bubblegum-surf-punk." Our songs have the catchy hooks and themes of bubblegum-pop, but are infused with the hard-hitting energy of punk...with a splash of surf. Think Hole meets The Beach Boys.
We've already recorded and released one of the six songs, "Before the Summer's Over." Check out the music video, above!
4 Reasons We Need an EP
This EP is vital to the growth of the band. Here are 4 reasons why:
1. An EP will grow our fan base - We want to reach new fans where they are - be it Spotify, YouTube, a record store, or one of our live shows. This will give us the chance to share our music with as many people as possible, and convert new fans.
2. Allow us to go on tour - By growing our fan base with an EP, we'll be able to tour outside Los Angeles. The more people hear our EP and become fans, the more we'll be able to sell tickets and fill venues across the country.
3. Gain exposure in the industry - With an EP, a growing fan base, and sold out live shows, we will begin to attract the attention of industry professionals who are in a position to take us to the next level, extending our reach exponentially. This would also give us the chance to land a record deal for a full-length album.
4. Hone our sound - The process of making an album helps us grow musically and creatively as a band, and with that growth we will be able to strike a more distinctive voice & sound that will set us apart from other bands even more.
Meet Helaine & the Hurricanes
We’ve worked hard to assemble an extremely talented, awesome team of musicians for our debut EP. Let me do the honors!
Bill Scott (lead guitar) is a Berkeley trained guitarist who has been playing with us for a year, and can shred an axe like no one I've ever seen. He's able to play in our style, and add his own unique flavor to make each song sound even better. Bill once had to ask Jay-Z to turn his music down in the next recording studio over.
Anthony Treme' (drums) We met Anthony in another band, and loved working with him so much, we invited him to play with HATH. Gratefully, he obliged. He studies and masters every rhythm we throw at him, no matter how challenging, and that's all before we get in the studio. His raw skill and creativity have taken each song (and performance) to a whole new level. Anthony was once a stand-in for actor Ewan McGregor.
Helaine (vocals & rhythm guitar) I've dabbled in many genres as a musician - from indie to musical theater - but found my heart & soul in the fast-paced, hard-hitting sounds of punk rock. The first gig I ever played was an open mic night at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, NYC (where Bob Dylan first played). I've since moved to LA, and often pinch myself to think that I have a punk rock band in Hollywood, CA. I was named after Hurricane Helaine, which touched down in the Atlantic ocean the night I was born.
Karim Elgobashi (bass) is a classically trained guitarist who has been touring and playing professionally for over 15 years. He's a master of the bass guitar, and his experience and playing style, rooted in '80s glam and punk, is a perfect fit for Helaine and the Hurricanes. After high school, Karim was a hot dog vendor in the Castro District of San Francisco, CA.
Tom Biller (producer) We spent months looking for just the right producer for this EP. We wanted someone who would lean into the genre, so we reached out to the producers of bands we love most, who have a similar sound, and we got our first choice! Tom is a seasoned pro who has produced albums for the likes of Kate Nash, Warpaint and Karen O (if you don't know them, you should). Tom won a Grammy for his work with Jon Brion on Kanye West’s album, “Late Registration.”
Our dream is to record five songs, and release a 6-song EP (including one song we've already recorded). For that we would need a total of $10,000 - our stretch goal. This will allow us to share the music we've written and perfected in its fullest expression, and to tell the entire story of the record.
Our stretch goal will also give us enough funding to experiment and fine tune in the studio, ensuring our signature sound shines through in the recording process; and to make sure we properly promote and distribute our album across all platforms.
Over the last several months, we've written the songs and fine tuned our sound in rehearsals and live shows. Now we're ready share these songs with you!
Stretch Goal: $10,000 - Cost Breakdown
$5,000 - Studio + Producer fee. This will cover rental fees for producer Tom Biller's top notch equipment and studio space in North Hollywood, as well as his producing/recording/mixing fees.
$500 - Mastering. This is the final step in the recording process. It balances all the audio elements on the album, and ensures uniformity and consistency of sound between multiple tracks.
$2,500 - Marketing and PR. The importance of this cannot be overstated. Once we finish the album, we need to tell the world about it! This includes a PR campaign to gain media exposure by setting up interviews and on-air performances on radio and podcasts; and sending press releases to music and culture blogs. Additionally, we'll promote the album across social media platforms - Instagram, Facebook, Spotify and other music streamers; we'll distribute promo materials throughout Los Angeles and beyond; and lastly, this will cover band merchandise (including rewards for you!).
$500 - Music video production. Music videos will increase exposure for each of our songs by reaching a new YouTube audience; they will increase our social media following on YouTube and other video platforms; and they create revenue opportunities via ad placements. Best of all, the videos allow us to tell the story of each song visually as well as musically.
$1,000 - Creating and manufacturing album art, logos, and packaging, plus 50-100 vinyls, CDs and tapes (yes, tapes are back!). This will allow us to sell our music at live shows, and connect with fans who listen on non-digital formats.
$500 - Kickstarter fees (Kickstarter's fee is 5% of total funding)

Risks and challenges
I'm grateful to say, I've been through this process before (this is my 4th record; first with HATH) and learned a lot each time. I've learned the importance of the demo-process, and how much it takes to be fully prepared to record in the studio. I've learned to factor in hours of rehearsal, fine tuning each note of every song. Delays and road bumps are part of the process, but with a stellar team, a solid production plan, and your support, I know we can hit our deadlines and release this EP!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
