I got the idea for this story from my own dog, Dave. I adopted this large rescued racing greyhound six years ago and sadly he passed on this year. Sometimes it felt like I was sharing my home with a pony, but the great love and warmth he gave helped me through some of the toughest times of my life. I rescued my hound, but I think in fact, he rescued me. I wanted to create a fairytale that captured the essence of what a dogs love is and how it can change lives.
When designing the images I was heavily inspired by the Russian illustrators of the early 20th Century. I adore the colours, patterns, designed space and sense of drama. They remind me of the beautiful children's books of my own childhood. I wanted to capture that nostalgia.
I am raising money to be able to bring this project to print. Every illustration takes approximately 30 hours from sketch up to finishing touches and I love every moment of that. I'm producing these pages in every spare moment that I have. Its going to take another 180 hours to complete all the images and I would dearly love to give this project more time. With your donations I will be able to complete all the artwork, the layout and the design in 3 months and pay for between 100 and 150 quality printed hard back books.
I want this book to be a treasured object; to be beautifully printed on quality materials, to be pored over again and again, so that new things can be found in the images on every reading. Basically, I want you to love this book.
If the Hound's Heart is successful I aim to make a series - The Marlinspike Tales....but that's next year.
Risks and challenges
The only thing that causes me anxiety is that when I hand over my images to the printers for publishing, the final product will fall below my expectations. My paintings are intense in colour and I want to ensure that the colour of the prints are true.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
