Here is what you will receive at each reward level:
The use of technology increases every day, computers are becoming so pervasive they are even in our light bulbs.
We are teaming up with some of the most talented people in the industry in order to create a full course to teach a novice how to program. We desire to use video games as a medium of distraction; to make the process of learning how to program fun. This course is project based, we will predominantly be creating Timmy's Nightmare; a game that is designed to make sure every facet of programming will be covered. The full price of the course will be US$200 when finished, here's your chance to get it for much less.
How is this course different from others?
This course uses a brand new language that is tailored for beginners. The language I am referring to is SkookumScript. It is the first and, as of right now, only course offering to teach this new language. SkookumScript is interactive and supports real-time programming. It will be far easier to learn all of the traditionally difficult programming concepts using SkookumScript, than to learn programming using something archaic like C++. After using SkookumScript, your skills will be transferable to any other language!
We mainly focus on one project, a game called Timmy’s Nightmare. In Timmy’s Nightmare, you will learn everything you need to know about programming in order to start making your own games/applications. Timmy’s Nightmare is designed to stretch your mind, pushing you to invent creative solutions to given problems.
In this course we use our unique project, Timmy’s Nightmare, for quizzes and study references. Thus, we make the quiz and review materials far more exciting than the usual flashcards and multiple choice drab found in other courses. Every video introduces new concepts, these videos will be short, containing a quiz immediately after the video concludes. Making short videos ensures that you can digest each new idea completely, completely mastering the subject that was introduced, before moving on.
There will be cheat sheets, diagrams, and reference materials for everything. All the assets for this course are free for anyone who purchases the course and can be used for anything. If you decide to complete Timmy’s Nightmare and sell it somewhere… go right ahead! Students will receive lifetime access to this course when backing this project. We are extremely active in discussions; We will be on the forums just about every day.
Who is this for...
Anyone who wants to learn how to program and others who want to learn SkookumScript, specifically. SkookumScript, combined with the Unreal Engine, will make the process of learning to code as smooth as possible.
Learning to program can be difficult, it can be even harder with all the boring, uninteresting material that pervades the internet. Anyone who wants to learn to program, in the quickest way possible, while having as much fun as conceivable, should back this kickstarter.
Here is a few quotes about SkookumScript from industry veterans...
Why are we doing a Kickstarter...
- Fund the development of the course full time
- Allow backers to influence the course.
- Determine whether the market is worth pursuing before spending untold hours developing the course.
When will the course be ready?
We have already started production of the course. However, to see it meet its full potential, we decided to ask for help so that we can develop the course full time. The instant the course passes its funding goal, we will start cleaning up what we have already been working on, making it suitable for Udemy.
Those who pledge for early access will be invited first, within a month of the Kickstarter closing date. Next, within two months, anyone else who has backed the course will be invited. The course will then be be further developed until Timmy’s Nightmare is finished. Timmy’s Nightmare will have levels, bosses, etc. It will be a full game from start to finish.
Why will this course be better than other existing courses?
There are no other courses, that we know of, that teach how to use the only scripting language for the Unreal Engine, SkookumScript. The Unreal Engine lacks a good productive language for developing games, SkookumScript is an amazing language for game development and learning. You will be awe struck by how fast you will learn with such a language.
Here's the top reasons our course will be the best, bar none...
- We are professionals
- We are making a complete game that you can sell if you like
- We are using a cutting edge language that is intuitive and easy
- All assets are free; you may use them however you wish
Who are we?
Hello, my name is Jacob Goodson. I have been programming for approximately 6 years. I was teaching at a private school and realized that books are a boring, stale medium for the transference of knowledge.
I ascertained that we have been inundated with an excess of external stimuli from media. Our brains have been rewired, due to brain plasticity, to filter out information, because of the extraordinary amount of information that we receive currently. It is my view that the vernacular of the student today is media.
I believe that this, media explosion, has given rise to the “everyone has ADD” phenomenon that we are now observing. I do not think that everyone has ADD, I believe that our brains have merely adapted to our environment.
To combat this problem, I decided I would implement a new curriculum that has a stronger, more stimulating effect on the brain. A curriculum that involved an interactive medium, instead of the standard static tome we refer to as books. I started to program this curriculum into existence, however, I lacked the requisite knowledge for the creation of this medium. Thus, I began to intensely study Mathematics, Game Programming, and AI.
I ended up going to Harvard and received a Masters of Mathematics with a concentration in Teaching. I currently teach programming and mathematics at Strem in Georgia. I am still trying to make a curriculum for all the ADDites out there.
Hey, I’m Travis O'Brien. I’ve been a programmer for about 10 years and an artist for about 5 years. I’ve been an independent programmer ever since I started, developing games and engines from scratch just to see how things tick.
I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of software design, at a technical level. This fascination has lead me to explore the many ideas behind game engines and how data flows through memory. However, many times throughout my studies, I’ve been lead astray and was taught what is known as ‘industry standard’ programming. This may be strange to hear, but this negatively impacted my growth as a developer.
So I decided to step back and analyze the problems with current ideologies of programming and software design. Knowing that I was independent in my journey of developing games, I needed to find a solution that would not only accommodate the challenges of working alone, but also allow me to develop software at a safer and faster pace.
I’m overly excited to share with you what I’ve learned throughout my years of studies and to prepare you for your own journey as a programmer so that you will have an edge over your competition.
- Lord Jesus, You are my Rock and Salvation, for Your continued long-suffering and forgiveness
- My wife, her patience and kindness knows no bounds, thank you baby!
- Travis, without him there would be no aesthetic appeal whatsoever
- My parents, they always support me in every endeavor, they continue to love me without fail; their lives and relationship are an inspiration to me
- YOU - OUR AMAZING BACKERS.
Risks and challenges
There are no real risks, we will only spend the money for our continued existence. If, for some unknown cosmic reason, we cannot complete the course, we will refund everyone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
