  • Wizard Laser engraving (UNLOCKED) Unlock at $4,000
  • Zombie Laser Engraving UNLOCKED Unlock at $6,000
  • Cthulhu Laser Engraving (UNLOCKED) Unlock at $7,000
  • Wizard 3d carving (UNLOCKED) Unlock at $10,000

  • Unicorn 3d carving (LOCKED) AT $20,000
  • Free set of Dice for each backer (LOCKED) AT $20,000

Pen/Pencil Add-On

Due to requests from backers, I am going to include into the add-on option on backerkit a mechanical pencil. This will be of the Slimline design which is, as you might guess, slimmer than the Classic, Celtic or Victorian designs. It will be the only pencil offering (they do not make pencil designs in the other styles I'm using) So, here is how things look:

  • Slimline Pencil The slimline pencil takes a .7mm pencil lead. While the picture shows a pencil with nickel hardware, but the pencil offered will be in gold hardware. Price for Domestic woods will be $25, Exotic woods (including rares) $30, and Dragonhorn $35.
  • The American Classic pen is a broader, heavier pen. It twists open and will use any Parker style refill. The above picture is "Dragonhorn" with gold hardware. Classic pens will have gold hardware. They are available in domestic woods for $35, exotic woods (including rares) for $40, or Dragonhorn for $45.
  • Celtic Pen The Celtic style pen is thicker and shorter than the American Classic and features a beautiful Celtic knot pattern with a green cabochon on the end. It also accepts the Parker style refill. Pictured above in purpleheart, the Celtic is available in domestic woods for $60, exotic woods (including rares) for $65, or Dragonhorn for $70. You also will have the option of Antique Brass (pictured), Antique Pewter, or Antique Copper hardware.
  • The Victorian If Steampunk is your style, you may like the Victorian pen. The Victorian captures the formal opulence of the Victorian Era with this extravagant, elaborately designed and absolutely striking pen. It is available in domestic woods for $60, exotics for $65 and Dragonhorn for $70. You get the choice between Gold, Antique Pewter, or Antique Brass hardware.

There are pictures in the Updates section.

Dice Tower and Dice case

In Hrothgar's Hoard's first project, I introduced the Rogue and Priest line of miniature cases. These cases are designed to hold 28mm miniatures and are made with a unique construction method which uses a single piece of wood with no joints that can weaken over time. The solid feel of the cases was well received and a request came out to make similar dice towers that do not feel flimsy as many of the portable, laser-cut plywood towers do.

Introducing Hrothgar's Hoard's Wizard series of dice towers

I use the same concept of construction for the dice tower as I did for the Rogue and Priest line of miniature cases. I use a single piece of 8/4 lumber and, using a precision CNC, hollow out the interior so that the randomizing chamber is cut from one piece of wood. No part can come misaligned and no joints can come undone. One thick piece of wood is hollowed out, giving great randomizing results and a very sturdy construction model that will outlast the popular plywood models that are sold at conventions and gaming stores.

The front of the tower is a 1/4" piece of wood that can be left plain, have a laser-etched piece of artwork engraved on it, or have a 3D image carved directly into it. These decorative options will become the envy of your fellow gamers.

The tower itself will fit into a bottom tray into which the dice will roll. When you are finished gaming, condense the tower into a single unit and pack it up for your next session.

The dice tray is also milled from a single piece of 8/4 wood. It is deeper than most dice trays, allowing the randomizing chamber to sink almost completely within it when in its traveling state. This protects the randomizing chamber from damage when not in use.

The tower itself measures approximately 3" wide, 7.5" high and 1.75" deep. The dice tray is slightly larger.

CNC cut from 8/4 hardwoods, the randomizing chamber is a single unit with no joints that can weaken over time. The walls are left relatively thick, giving the unit a solid feel.

The face-plate is put on the front of the randomizing chamber. This is adhered to the randomizing chamber by glue, and then sanded flush for a seamless look. The front of the faceplate can either be left plain, or can be either laser-cut or 3D-cut to add more character to your tower (see "Upgrades" below).

Levels

There are four pledge levels for you to choose from to get a Wizard Dice Tower.

Wizard Dice Tower - Basic

Wizard Dice Tower - Domestic

Wood Types: Cherry, Maple, Walnut, Curly Maple

New for selection for Domestic: CEDAR!!!!

Wizard Dice Tower - Exotic

Purpleheart*, Bubinga*, Padauk*, Bloodwood*,

Wizard Dice Tower - Rare

Zebrawood*, Wenge*,

Wizard Dice Tower - Limited

Currently, only 5 of these towers will be offered. Additional towers may be added based on lumber availability.

*please note that it is difficult to obtain exotic woods in 8/4" width. Exotic woods may need to be glued in order to fulfill these orders. An effort will be made to maintain grain consistency, but you will normally be able to see the seam between the layers of wood.

To see examples of the exotic woods, please see below in the Dice Case section.

Options

The Wizard can have various artwork added on to it to make it more attractive. This can be done either through a laser engraving or an actual 3d image.

Laser engraving can only be done on the face-plate at this time. Current choices for laser engraving include the "Celtic Shield," "Sword and Shield," and "Doomed Princess" from the Rogue/Priest campaign. For any of these upgrades, add $10 for each engraving. Engravings will not be colorized, although that option can be added in the post-Kickstarter campaign for $20.

Laser engraving image options (add $10 per engraving):

  • Celtic Shield
  • Sword and Shield
  • Doomed Princess
  • Wizard
  • Unicorn
  • Zombie
  • Cthulhu

The Wizard now available

Here is the line-art drawing of the wizard

and here is how it looks engraved on poplar

Unicorn

Unicorn on poplar

Zombie

3D carving is a new option for Hrothgar's Hoard products. This is done on a CNC machine onto front of the randomizing chamber. The cost for this upgrade is $10.

Currently, the only image available for 3d carving is a Celtic Cross (see below).

3D carving image options (add $10 per 3d carving)

  • Celtic Cross
  • Wizard
  • Dragon
  • Unicorn (LOCKED)

Customized engraving

Customized laser engraving is available. Rather than doing a set-up fee plus a cost per image done, there is a simple $12.50 charge per case to laser engrave the image. I will engrave the image on the following conditions:

  • You assume all responsibility for the artwork in question. This means that the artwork is either original art that you created, artwork that is in the public domain (not just on the web), or artwork that you have received permission to use.
  • You provide me with the artwork in line-art format in .jpg or .pdf format. File resolution should be sufficiently good enough to replicate.
  • You agree to allow me to use said artwork on future cases or projects at my discretion.

I will not reproduce images that are obviously copyrighted even if you drew the image yourself. For example, I will not do an engraving of Mickey Mouse, since it is a copyrighted image, even if you drew the picture yourself.

Adventurer Packs

Got a group of gamers that want some Wizards? Get 5 towers and get a discount. Adventurer packs are available at Basic, Domestic, and Exotic Levels. You can mix and match any types of woods from the tier in which you are pledging or from a lower level tier.

Retail Packs

It is my hope that the dice towers are picked up by retailers. If you are a retailer interested in selling the Wizard Dice Towers, you can do so by pledging at the appropriate Retailer level (Basic, Domestic or Exotic) Each retailer pack comes with ten dice towers in your choice of woods (in the appropriate level). For an additional $50 you can have your business logo put on all ten towers.

Dice Case

The dice case uses the same concept of construction as Hrothgar's Hoard's Rogue and Priest cases. Each side is milled from a single piece of wood, giving you enough room to transport a single set of dice. The top of the case is rounded to give a chest-like look to the case and it is finished with a high gloss lacquer to increase durability and visual appeal. A pair of brass hinges and a brass clasp finish the look. This is a great compliment to the Rogue and Priest series cases.

The Dice case is approximately 5.5" wide, 1.5" high and 1.75" deep

Add-Ons

You can add to your pledge to receive additional towers, cases, or other products from Hrothgar's Hoard. Please see the following chart for add on availability and prices:

  • Wizard Dice Tower - Rare: Add $100 per dice tower. Choose between zebrawood or wenge
  • Wizard Dice Tower - Limited: Add $150 per dice tower in Cocobolo.
  • Laser artwork and 3d renderings offered in this project can be added on to any dice tower for $10 per dice tower. Custom artwork can be added for $12.50 per dice tower.

Dice Cases

  • Dice Case - Basic: Add $10 per poplar dice case.
  • Dice case - Domestic: Add $15 per dice case. Choose between cherry, maple, walnut, cedar, or curly maple.
  • Dice Case - Exotic: Add $20 per dice case. Choose between purpleheart, padauk, bubinga, or bloodwood.
  • Dice Case - Rare: Add $25 per dice case. Choose between zebrawood, wenge, or cocobolo.
  • The Celtic knot artwork can be added to any case for $10 per case. Custom designs can be added for $12.50 per case.

Miniature Cases

You can also add-on the Rogue and Priest Miniature cases from my first project. Prices and options have been streamlined.

Rogue Miniature Cases

Rogue miniature cases are approximately 5" x 8" with each side of the case milled from a single piece of wood, so there are no joints that can weaken over time and no chance of glue marks that can show through the finish. They come with 1/2" foam backing inside the case so you can place up to 12 miniatures inside. The cases are milled in a way in which they will hold miniatures affixed to a base up to 30 mm in diameter. They come with brass hardware.

  • Rogue - Basic: add $20 per poplar Rogue miniature case
  • Rogue - Domestic: add $30 per Rogue miniature case. Choose from maple, cedar, cherry, walnut, or curly maple.
  • Rogue - Exotic: add $40 per Rogue miniature case. Choose from purpleheart, padauk, bubinga, or bloodwood.
  • Rogue - Rare: add $65 per Rogue miniature case. Choose from zebrawood, wenge, or cocobolo.
  • laser artwork and 3d renderings can be added to any Rogue case for $15 per case. Custom designs can be added for $17.50 per case.
Priest Miniature Case

The Priest case is a larger case that will hold more than twice the number of figures that the Rogue will hold. It has been re-designed from the initial project, measuring approximately 6.5" x 12". It also uses the same concept of construction; each half is milled from a single piece of wood so there are no joints that can weaken over time. Priest cases come with felt lining so they can double as dice trays, as well as 1/2" foam to protect up to 30 of your miniatures. They will also hold miniatures up with up to a 30mm base and come with brass hardware.

  • Priest - Basic: add $40 per poplar Priest miniature case.
  • Priest - Domestic: add $50 per Priest miniature case. Choose from maple, cedar, cherry, walnut*, or cedar*.
  • Priest - Exotic: $60 per Priest Miniature case. Choose from purpleheart, bloodwood*, bubinga*, or padauk*.
  • Priest - Rare: $100 per Priest miniature case. Choose from zebrawood*, wenge*, or cocobolo*.
  • laser artwork and 3d renderings from this project can be added to a Priest case for $20 per case. Custom artwork can be added for $22.50 per case.

* wood in this species may be difficult to find in the appropriate width and therefore two boards may need to be glued together into order to make this case.

 Backer-Kit

It is my plan at this time to use Backerkit.com as the post-project management system. Because of this, there will be some limitations to options that are highlighted in this campaign. For example, In the last campaign, I offered cases with different artwork, different hinges, different felt, etc. This made using Backerkit too cumbersome. For this campaign, I will be first make sure that an option is EASILY handled through backerkit. If it is not easily handled, then it will not be listed as an option.

This will help me with product fulfillment and quality control. One of the main headaches I had with the first project was that I had so many options that it was difficult to do things in batches I frequently had to pull cases out of the production line to do specific enhancements to them, and it basically slowed the entire process down. By streamlining the process in this campaign, I will be able to fulfill pledges more quickly and keep the product more consistent over the entire production run.

So does this mean that you can't have specific upgrades to your product? No, not really. It just means that to do so will mean managing it on the back end, and that the changes will need to be accounted for in the fee of the product. What I am considering doing right now is adding an Add-On to the backerkit management system where if you want a minor alteration, you will need to choose "minor alteration" as an add-on. There will be a fee associated with this ($10 per alteration) that reflects the time needed to pull the product from the line, make the alteration, and re-integrate it into the shipping process. So, if you want yellow felt instead of green felt, yes you can do that. But you will need to select the "customization" add-on, tell me what the customization is on the back-end survey, and pay the fee to account for extra time/materials. If you want more than one alteration (say, different felt AND a different faceplate on the Wizard Tower), then you will need to select 2 minor alteration and pay the additional $20 fee associated with this.

By approaching customizations in this manner I hope to minimize the impact it has on the rest of the production line while still offering the ability to make the product as unique as your characters.

What constitutes a "minor alteration"

A minor alteration is some change that will take a relatively small amount of time to change and/or limited expense. Examples include:

  • Felt color other than green (note that there still may be some limitations to colors available.
  • padding the randomizing arms with felt to dampen the noise.
  • Faceplate of a different wood than the base (must choose a wood species in the same tier as the dominant wood)
  • engraving on an area in addition to the front of the tower (there may be limitations on this.)
  • contact me for other minor alterations.

There may also be the possibility of a Major alteration. A major alteration would be something that is either time intensive and/or expensive or unique. Examples of a major alteration are:

  • Face plate of a wood in a higher category than the pledge level (for example, a poplar tower with a purpleheart faceplate).
  • a finish other than the standard or applied in an unusual manner (finishes will normally be a gloss acrylic or polyurethane sprayed on the product. If you wanted a satin finish that I would have to purchase separetly, or wanted the finish rubbed on instead of spray, it would constitute a major alterations.
  • Tower made in a wood other than what is listed.
  • Tower made in a different size than what is listed.

The minimum charge for a major alteration would be $20, but you need to contact me prior to planning on a major alteration. If, for example, you wanted your tower made in a wood not listed, the cost would not just be $20. It would be the cost of the full board in addition to the pledge for the tower itself. Many exotic woods run over $15 a board foot and I would have to purchase a 6 to 8' long board to make one tower. In this instance, you would need to cover the cost of the entire board because I don't know if I could sell additional towers in that wood.

Finally, some things just may not be doable. I can't make a tower in my construction method out of ebony, for example. I also cannot alter the tower enough to let you roll that custom 2-inch die you purchased out of adamantium or whatever. There are going to be limits to what I can do to alter a product. Contact me in advance and I'll quote you a price for your alteration.

What do my previous backers have to say?

I won't claim that nobody had any issues, but here is a selection of comments I received.

 Kicking it Forward

Once again, I am committing to the kicking it forward program where I pledge to kick 5% of my profits on to other kickstarter projects. Take a look here for more info on this program: http://kickingitforward.org

Free Miniature Bases

I'm making 1" bases for you to mount your miniatures on. These are cut from poplar wood, approximately 3mm high and 1" in diameter. You can buy these after the project ends in backerkit for $2.50 for a 20 pack, or you can earn free bases for helping me out here. Here is how you can get some free bases:

Post a comment (expired) every comment posted before Saturday 8/9 is worth 5 bases up to a maximum of 50 bases. Comments do not need to be on topic, just let me know what is on your mind.

Like my facebook page: Go to https://www.facebook.com/HrothgarsHoard and like my page. A like is worth another 5 free bases. Send a friend my way and have them like my page and it is worth another 5 free bases to you. If they end up backing my project, they get 5 free bases too. n order for me to track your friends for whom you want to get credit for, your friend must like my page, and then send me a comment saying "YOUR NAME from Kickstarter told me about your page." Make sure they tell me your KS name if it is different from your FB name.

This promo will run until the end of the project.

Other ideas?

I'm open to other ideas for giving away free bases. Send me a message with your idea on how you can earn them. Just keep in mind that it does cost me a little time and money to make these, so your idea needs to benefit me in some way...getting fresh eyes on the project, more people following me on social media, etc.

Risks and challenges

I learned so much from my first project and do not foresee much short of a natural disaster which would cause a delay in completing this project. I know now what steps I can eliminate, types of wood that do not work well with this type of project, and have been able to upgrade key pieces of equipment that run faster and more reliably than my previous equipment. In my first project, I was able to ship nearly all products on time. There is a very low probability that I will not be able to ship this project in time for Christmas.

However, on the chance that the project goes viral, and the workload becomes just too much in order to get out on time, I will add limits to the tiers so that the first round of backers are given a December ship date, and later backers will knowingly pledge in tiers with later ship dates.
