Welcome to turn-of-the-century London. You stand at the doors of the Athenaeum Club, 107 Pall Mall, at the corner of Waterloo place. You have done a good may things in your life, which seems a long one to you, owing to your having begun work so young, perhaps. At an age where others were at school, you were earning your living as a trader in the old Colony. You have been trading, hunting, fighting, or mining ever since. And yet, you stand at the doors of the club as an outsider.
Inside, you've heard, pray-tell, of an adventurer of the highest esteem. Allan Quatermain is more legend than man. His exploits have been told and retold in the weeklies, and, most importantly, by word-of-mouth. Quatermain has returned from a successful expedition to the mines of King Solomon.
To you, Allan Quatermain is either one to follow, or one to foil.
Inside and out of the Athenaeum Club, there is legend of the lost city of Carcosa. The city is an ancient, mysterious, and possibly cursed place. It is said to have black stars overhead, and it is lit by two suns that sink into the fabled lake of Hali. It is also rumored to be rife with treasures beyond conception.
Quartermain is mounting an expedition to the legendary city. Do you pledge your support to the notorious explorer, or try to beat him at his own game? Can you decipher the mysteries surrounding the location of Carcosa? Can you outwit forces trying to stop you? Will you survive the expedition, or perish as so many have?
Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Carcosa is a tabletop RPG that uses the 5e SRD. The game is a sandbox pulp adventure, with an emphasis on using your wits, brawn, and copious firepower to outthink and outfight your foes. Based on the characters and mythology created by H. Rider Haggard and Robert W. Chambers, the game is heavily focused on action, with a hint of horror courtesy of the "King in Yellow" mythos.
Let's not forget, that the turn of the century is a time of great progress and great upheaval. One might expect to encounter violent street gangs, ruthless aristocrats, glory-vain explorers, and even a certain serial killer prowling the alleys of White Chapel. Outside of London, expect cannibals, man-eating predators, and competing adventurers.
Travel to far off, dangerous lands will be accomplished by land, sea, and even air.
Make no bones, this is a knuckle-duster of a game. Rules, while based on 5e, will be focused on quickly getting players and the GM into the thick of it with ease.
The game will be produced via Print On Demand.
The creator, who holds a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing, is a lifelong player of games, and has had a lifelong love affair of the pulp adventure and horror genres.
Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Carcosa, currently under production, has a target release of Summer 2019.
Risks and challenges
To be completely straight, this is the first-time project for the creator. This is the biggest risk. To overcome the challenge of a first-time project, the creator has a wide array of friends and colleagues who are also lifelong gamers and very experienced in the creative arts.
The funding goal is a realistic number based on research into the creation and publication of a tabletop RPG. The timeline is meant to allow for the maximum ability to tweak and test.
As it is recognized that backers would be taking an inherent risk, the creator welcomes all questions and comments and will be as forthcoming as possible throughout the project life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
