What is it?
The So is a marriage of open source software and small energy efficient hardware. The host operating system "wattOS" has been in existence since 2008 and is listed and reviewed in multiple locations online and is tracked on distrowatch.com. Its purpose was/is to create a lightweight desktop environment that gets out of your way, uses low resources and is highly customizable and energy efficient. Many old computers have been brought back to life with wattOS. Its freely available at www.planetwatt.com
What will the funds be used for?
The funds will be used to buy the hardware needed for the initial hardware orders. We have sourced the barebones computer system itself from a supplier here in the US who has a strong presence and a long term relationship with the manufacturer. We have also sourced the components from them as well (the RAM and SSD drives of various sizes. We can get better pricing when buying in volume and has discussed between 2-5% additional discounts for orders in volume. The initial units available on Kickstarter are going to be 20% below retail cost, and are basically 5% above true cost. We need finish up the packaging and branding, and most importantly the software portal at soplanet.com that will be the place for everyone who owns a So to go and "click to install" new roles for their device. Additionally wattOS will have a "So specific" build so that the hardware and all drivers and performance is specifically ready for the software installed..
Hardware and manufacturing additional information.
The So hardware specifications are below. All of the SSD drives sourced are going to be intel 520 series MLC SSD drives. When discussing this with the supplier, we believe they will produce the most reliable and consistent product.
For the initial orders, the barebones systems will be shipped from the supplier to Portland Oregon for test and assembly and then shipped to each person. Once we ramp up to full production, the supplier has full test and assembly capability and they will handle the orders, testing, imaging from a gold image, and assembly of all units. The turn around time for the testing and assembly is 3-5 working days once in full production and shipment of components of orders made in advance will be 2-3 weeks from order to shipment .
Secondly additional peripherals need to be tested and made available as there are plans for a solar kit for the So and other power/mounting and accessories that have been tested and made available specifically for the device.

The initial orders from Kickstarter will ship within 3 weeks of funding closing.
The initial units will ship to Portland Oregon for assembly and test of the image, and will ship within 3 weeks of closing funding. If the funding closes in early June, that means shipments in early July. I will update the exact dates once funding closes.
Secondly additional peripherals need to be tested and made available as there are plans for a solar kit for the So and other power/mounting and accessories that have been tested and made available specifically for the device. The first items made available will be a VESA mount for monitor type mounting and wall mounting. These will be available in early July as well.

Software Board - Applications and participation
Additionally the formation of the board of folks who will help prioritize and focus what applications should be developed next for the So will be important. Email me directly if you are interested in knowing more. Certain levels of participation automatically gain access to participating in the application board.
The OS is mature and built from upstream ubuntu as a base and has been in use for 4 years as wattOS. The initial applications are all well known suites and have been in development in the open source community for years. All initial "Roles" that the So can be reconfigured for have been tested. Documentation, forums, and help will be available on the soplanet.com website and forums as well as email support for folks who participate at that level.
