Sanpo (n.) A Walk. Michi (n.) A path.
Sanpomichi – A Path walked regularly, habitually, thoughtfully. It is the story of two women, Hiroko & Yumi living their lives in a Tokyo apartment, as they have done for decades. Yumi is a middle-aged mouse, slightly frenzied in her caring for Hiroko, her mother, a methodical, slightly stubborn mouse. Sanpomichi is inspired by Japan and the music of Yuzo Kayama.
The story has shades of a functional Grey Gardens, with elements of Richard Scarry and Fantastic Mr. Fox, but it is truly a unique film, that promises to delight in a quiet, lingering way.

10K Stretch Goal!
If we meet our stretch goal of $10,000 - we will put a third ($825) of the additional funds into our labor budget. A Quarter of it ($625) will be used to purchase a voltage regulator, which will help to control power variance that leads to flickering. The remaining ($1,050) will go into our release budget to help with press kit costs and festival entrance fees.

Seattle has an incredible Independent Arts scene, and the Indie Film community is a very large part of that. There are so many viable projects continually happening, so what sets Sanpomichi apart, and why does it deserve your support?
A. You love Stop Motion, a difficult and time-intensive medium. You understand it demands a team committed to excellence, one that has the passion to see a project through on what can be a very long, and at times, tedious gestation period. You love the fact that every element of the film is made in miniature by hand. While challenging, the end result is more than a film, it is a one of a kind piece of art.
B. You can relate to Sanpomichi. You love to see beauty exposed, but not exploited. While Sanpomichi takes place in Japan, it is not a story about Japan. It features a mother and daughter, but is not a mother/daughter story. Sanpomichi is about two aging women, but it is not a story about age, or even about being a woman. It is simply a beautiful, quiet story about the relationship between two people.
Mari was born in Tokyo and grew up in Ichikawa city, Chiba prefecture Japan. She specializes in handcrafted stop motion animation, and illustration. Her mission is to be a voice for quiet beauty and existence. In addition, she is also continually creating illustrations to publish in her first art book “Furcoats and backpacks”. Making it happen!
Was born during a Wisconsin blizzard on the living room floor of a trailer. She loves her cats, and art that has a story. She is a Post Production Manager, and Production Assistant. Her goal is to build Bad Taste into a Film, Design & Publishing House, working to amplify the voices of independent artists.
Was born and raised in Wisconsin, cut his teeth in filmmaking at the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago, and wound up in Seattle as a motion designer. He’s led projects technically & creatively for various studios and clients, including an award winning music video for Sub-Pop Records for the band Nikki & The Dove.
Is a Washington native, and a staple in the underground music scene. He works as a promoter, recording producer/engineer, & will sling you beers if you ask nicely.
In September  we are traveling to Japan. The real life Yumi still lives in the apartment Sanpomichi is set in. We will take pictures of specific items that inspire us so that we can recreate them in scale, and we will be recording environmental audio to mix into the final audio design.
After we return, through the month of October, We will focus on finalizing the script and Mari will storyboard out the entire film and we will put together a board-o-matic to finalize edit.
November/December/January we will be creating Puppets, Props & Set materials.
February - June Mari will be animating.
July - August we will arrange the sequences, finesse edit, do any final compositing of special fx (like our cotton smoke in the teaser), as well as final color & treatment. In conjunction Tony will be composing and the foley work will be recorded.
September  - We will do the final mix & Release! We will have a big party, and you are all invited!

Are you paying yourselves?
We are deferring principle payment until the completion of the film, as we do not feel that it is fair to take on any payment while the film is unfinished and vulnerable. It is not included in our fundraising budget. You can be confident that your support is going towards the production of this film.

Risks and challenges
Every film production faces challenges, the most expensive being being computer, hard drive & other equipment failure, which we ran into while creating the teaser. We addressed these issues promptly by buying newer and more reliable equipment, so the chance of expensive problems arising is now much less, and if they do, we have a personal contingency fund set aside.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
