Good golly! We surpassed even our FINAL stretch goal! Any overage will assuredly go right back into making this an even awesomer book, make the paper for the reward prints even finer, and will offset shipping costs and such. I assure you, I won't be eating bonbons at the beach. IT'S ALMOST MY TURN!!!! I have been working on all the "behind the scenes" things during the kickstarter, as well as adding our final stretch goal pages. A little longer and I can get this book (and all the fun stuff that goes along with it) printed and into your hands!
UPDATE: FINAL STRETCH GOAL!!! If we can make it to $24,500, we can add more pages to the book, as well as include an EXCLUSIVE PRINT available ONLY to Kickstarter backers of $25 and up!
We met our first stretch goal, and will include an animal collaborations kid's storybook with every book reward!
My name is Mica and I'm an illustrator. Late last year, I let our 4-year old daughter draw on some drawings of faces I had done in my sketchbook, which resulted it some of the strangest, most whimsical little doodles.
I shared them on my blog, and the post went viral, spreading the story we told about letting go of what you THINK should happen and just enjoying the time you spend together with the ones you love.
Since then, the 4-year old and I have made a ton of collaborative doodles, and people have asked me time & time again if we'd make a book. Although we got a few publishing nibbles, we never got any real "bites..." They all ultimately said the illustrations were "too strange," or "unsellable." They just couldn't figure out a way to market it for mass production. Well, I'm not interested in mass production. I just want to share something strange and fun, and put something GOOD into the world.
People have shared with me how this story has inspired them to really spend more time sharing their own passions with their children, parents, patients, students, friends, and families. How if you let go of your expectations and just enjoy the ride, you'll make room for wonderful things to come in.
So with this project, I'd like to print and publish an 8x10, 96-page, full color, hardcover art book I've put together that tells the story of the collaborations and how they came to be, the lessons I learned from the whole experience, and some inspirations for doing the same in your own life, no matter what your passion is.
It's also a collection of the collaborative illustrations--from dinosaur girls to beaver-men, all from the intertwined imaginations of our 4-year old daughter and me. With each page is a funny little blurb of text, each page a new snippet of a separate story, to sort of put each character in context. I also include some doodle pages to try yourself, as well as the story of our process. There even are some pages never before shared on Facebook, Twitter, or my blog!
As rewards, I'm offering a variety of things: a set of 5 collaboration printed postcards...
Homemade printed collaboration gift tags...
Doodle pages on thick paperstock, for you or a loved one to create fun things with...
And of course--signed copies of the book (signed by just me, more than likely--depending how cooperative the little one is).
At the $150 level (along with the other rewards), I'm including a CUSTOM hand-drawn simple portrait of whichever single lovely face you'd like me to draw! I will draw it by hand in pen on a 5x7 page and blend it into one of our already-printed dragon bodies (originally drawn by the 4-year old), so it looks like it's part of one of our collaborations!
At the $250 level, the custom portrait will include acrylic color washes and highlights, with more detail...
The $250 reward will also include a little low-fi printing of a little children's storybook I wrote from the animal collaborations we did, which I would also someday like to print.
At the highest $500 level, I'm including a full-color, hand-drawn and painted portrait of whichever single lovely face you'd like me to draw! I will draw it by hand in pen on an 8x10 page and blend it into an already-printed dinosaur body from "Dinosaur Girl" (originally drawn by the 4-year old), adding acrylic color washes & highlights so it looks like it's part of one of our collaborations!
(As a side note: I'm staying away from offering to have our daughter do originals, as I don't want to have her chained to an art desk at the tender age of 4, fulfilling reward orders...I hope you understand!)
Our goal is high, I know. But keeping in mind printing costs of a full-color, hardcover book, shipping them once they're printed, shipping and printing of rewards, it really is a considerable effort.
My personal goal for this is to have a beautiful, 8x10 hardcover, full-color book that can be enjoyed by adults and/or kids, along with some pages (for the brave souls) that are thick enough to be able to add onto and draw on yourself, if you like! I am using a printing company called Shapco, and they've sent me a sample of the thicker pages we'll be using. I wanted the paper to be thick enough to hold up to artistic and crafty kid and grownup hands, as well as have enough "tooth" to allow for maybe a few daring pen, paint, or marker marks right there in the book. The cover will be printed in hardcover, and will be around 96 pages. I am confident that the quality of the books will make for a beautiful, memorable keepsake, as well as something fun & wonderful to share with the people you love!
I hope you can help us make this book a reality! I know it's a lot, but I am hopeful we can do it. If you can't pledge, please PLEASE share. The world can always use a little more weirdness and wonder! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Risks and challenges
I am hoping that there won't be any MAJOR hitches!
I have a background in illustration and graphic design....I designed the book myself, so there may eventually be some changes to the cover layout, since I want it to look as nice as possible! I have chosen to work with a printer in the U.S. that I feel can print the book in the style and feel I'm looking for--a more natural, earthy-type feel, as opposed to crisp white bookstore books. It's quite expensive, but I think it'll be a beautiful 8x10 full-color book, full of fun and inspiring things. I want the pages to be sturdy, because some pages were made to be doodled on....:)
There are a few pages that feature characters our daughter was influenced by--Batman, Star Wars, Furby, etc. ...I am fairly certain we wouldn't be in violation of any copyright issues, but I am looking into that legally, to be sure. I really don't want to be sued over kid-doodles! So I may decide to take them out altogether to avoid any problem. I really feel it would be missing something without that portion, but if for some reason I find it safer to leave them out, I will be sure to replace them with additional (but still awesome) pages of our doodles.
Also, I put "August 2014" as the "expect it by" date, but I expect it'll be much sooner than that if we are able to get funded. I just didn't want to disappoint anyone! Trust me: I am a stickler for making sure everyone gets everything as quickly as possible in the best way I can!
From time to time, I'll post progress on my blog (busymockingbird.com), and I'll always keep frequent updates on my FB, Instagram, and Twitter accounts (@busymockingbird)! I'll be sure to let everyone know every step of the way what's going on!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
