We envisioned StickOut with 4 basic principles:
In the age of personalization, we noticed a lack of diverse options for those wanting to add personal style to their car. While dragons, skulls, and flames are totally cool, it’s not for everyone.
StickOut offers crowdsourced artwork that appeals to diverse popluations and lifestyles. Love art? Stylize your car with pop art. Into a certain lifestyle like surfing? Dress up your car with the coolest waves.
Our artwork is printed on top-of-the-line laminated vehicle vinyl; the very same material used in professional car wraps, which is designed for easy installation and many years of durability (possibly lasting longer than your car will).
We chose 3M vinyl because of its easy-to-install features including:
- Micro air-release channels for bubble-free installation
- Slidable and repositionable adhesive:
Expose the adhesive
Slide the artwork on your car
Lightly stick it, then remove, and slide it into the desired position
Apply pressure with the provided squeegee to permanently install
Easy - DIY
People don’t have the time and resources to take their car to a professional for detailing and wrapping.
At StickOut we've developed a simple and effective process to cut the artwork for a custom fit to your car model and the specific spot you choose. Now you can personalize your car without the need of professional automotive help.
Visualize before you order your artwork
At StickOut we've developed a simple and cool platform where you can choose a design and visualize it on your specific car model. You can move it around and rotate it until you find the best spot.
Preview it at any time to see how it looks on your car.
Easy On, Easy Off
People change their styles and don’t want to commit to one car design.
That’s the fun of StickOut! Easy on, easy off designs with no residue. Change your car style as often as you’d like. If you decide to remove it, just peel it off as you would with any sticker. Artwork that has been in place for long period of time may need heat applied to assist with its removal (a hair dryer should do the trick).
For almost a year we researched and tested the best materials available in the market. We had to make sure that once the artwork is on, it will look great and last for years but when it’s time to come off, it leaves no trace.
We compared vinyl types and their adhesives
Investigated application techniques for different car types and curvatures
Analyzed dye types, which play a significant role in the product longevity and to our environment
Tested printing, lamination, and cutting equipment
Participated in the annual Speciality Graphics Imaging Association (SGIA) show in Orlando, Florida, to talk to the major players in the industry.
Methods and Website Definition
We've developed the process to make it so simple for the user to place the selected artwork on their specific car make and model. With the help of StickOut’s interface, select the desired artwork and position on your car. We’ll send you a pre-cut application to peel and place.
We also worked very hard on the functionality and design of the user friendly website in order for customers to easily navigate the site, find what they want, and place an order through our unique interface. The website is under development and, with your help, it will be ready for launch in July, 2014.
Engaged With Artists
For several months now we have been working with illustrators and designers from around the world. StickOut artists have a fun, new platform to display their designs. Artists receive a profile page and profits from each design sold. Profiled artists, hailing from many disciplines and styles, are located in the USA, Macedonia, India, UK, France, Iceland, Thailand, Czech Republic, Argentina, Israel, Canada, and expanding to reach more artists globally.
Your help will allow us to:
Develop the web platform that will allow you to visualize and position the chosen artwork on your car
Productize the printing and cutting process that allows us to create the custom fit artwork
Reach more artists to offer their art on StickOut
Use the economy of scale to reduce the production cost to make StickOut more accessible to everybody.
Fund the purchase of a comprehensive picture database of car makes and models which is essential for our process

A quality and easy-to-use product is paramount for us. We've conducted extensive research and tests on materials to analyze the tradeoffs and chose the best solution for people without previous experience applying this type of graphics. We focused our research on 4 areas:
The graphic film - the media where the graphics is printed on
The lamination - a clear layer that protects the graphics from the sun and scratches so they stay vivid for years
3M™ Controltac™ graphic film with Comply™ v3 adhesive delivers the benefits of easy installation and non-visible air release channels for a smoother appearance and higher gloss.
This adhesive has three major characteristics that makes easier to apply the graphics on your car:
Slideability - the glue is pressure-activated, meaning that, unless you press the vinyl to your car, the adhesive will remain “inactive”. This allows you to slide the graphics on your car until you get to the right position.
Repositionable - Controltac™ technology is a mechanical feature out of millions of glass spheres on top of the adhesive surface. This minimizes the initial contact area of the adhesive and allows the applicator to reposition the graphic during application.
Bubble free - the adhesive has an array of micro air dissipation channels to help reduce trapped air and avoid those annoying bubbles.
The Graphic Film:
There are basically three types of vinyl families: monomeric calendered, polymeric calendered and polymeric cast (or simply cast).
Calendered films start life as a lump of plastic that is then flattened by being passed through two pressure rollers suffering from an inherent “memory” problem. In other words, they shrink over time leaving an exposed adhesive strip around it which catches dirt.
Monomeric calendered vinyl - These are low-cost, short-life films suitable mainly for flat surfaces - not something that we would like to use in StickOut…
Polymeric calendered vinyl - These films have added polymers to reduce shrinkage. However, although they have developed significantly over the years, they still fall short of the stability and durability of cast films.
Cast vinyl - This is a premium grade vinyl that, unlike calendered films, they are manufactured with very little inherent stress in the materials so they have no memory so shrinkage is barely perceptible. They are also thinner and softer, they better conform to curved sufaces found in most vehicles.
At StickOut we wouldn’t compromise with the material so we chose to use only premium 3M™ cast vinyl.
The lamination choice has a significant impact on the ease of application and aesthetics. Good lamination matching the graphic film is essential to protect it from abrasion, chemicals and UV exposure to extend the graphics life and to keep them vivid and vibrant for several years.
3M™ Scotchcal™ Gloss Overlaminate perfectly complements the graphic film of our choice.
We are aware that people may be reluctant to install the graphics on their cars by themselves so we worked hard to reduce all barriers making the installation as easier as possible. Cutting the artwork to fit the desired position on the car may be intimidating for many people afraid of harming their cars or the artwork itself.
We developed a method to cut the artwork to fit your car model and the specific spot that you would like it to be. The artwork is cut in top-of-the-art vinyl cutter to ensure maximum accuracy and clean finish.
If you are more of a handy person or you have previous experience with vinyl application, you can ask to send you the full uncut artwork so you can decide “live” where to install it and cut it by yourself.
We’ve already signed agreements with key suppliers and contract manufacturers and the website is in advanced stages of development.
The artwork cutting process, and its accuracy, has been “dry tested” using Photoshop and other tools.
However, the implementation of the software is still undergoing testing. Although we don’t expect major surprises, we may still find small obstacles in the automatic generation of the printing file with the cutting instruction.
Loading the car database and artwork to the website is a heavy task that may extend longer than planned.
In order to mitigate this issue we will first load the car models of our backers so this should impose no risk for them.
We signed an agreement to purchase a comprehensive database of car pictures which includes the majority of US and European models.
It may be a bit tricky to get pictures of car models of other parts of the world that are not sold in either the US or Europe.
However we will prioritize the search for our backer’s car models.
We’re constantly working with new designers! Here’s our complete catalog as of now: http://www.pinterest.com/stickoutart/stickout-artwork/ We are adding more designs every week so we expect to have a much bigger catalog of designs by the time you have to choose yours.
For a pledge of $150, you get a set of large-size artwork with YOUR DESIGN (about 5 sq. feet on each side of your car). Use your own design (your logo, kids pictures, etc.) to give a unique touch to your car. Will not be initially offered in our website.
You can apply the artwork on windows. However it is your responsibility to comply with local vehicle safety laws regarding window visibility, etc. Regular StickOut graphics are solid color (you won’t be able to see through them). Perforated view-through vinyl will be offered later on (with tiny holes in to allow the driver to see out the window through the graphic)
As we continue to grow our bank of graphics, we’re listening to our supporters and getting them what they want. However, For a pledge of $150, you get a set of large-size artwork with YOUR DESIGN (about 5 sq. feet on each side of your car). Use your own design (your logo, kids pictures, etc.) to give a unique touch to your car. Will not be initially offered in our website.
YES! StickOut will be available for all car colors. See http://www.pinterest.com/stickoutart/stickout-artwork/ for more colors and styles.
YES! The StickOut sticker is very durable and can handle a machine car wash (However, it's very important that at the first time you apply the decal to wait 24hr for it to strengthen)
StickOut graphics are made from 3M professional grade 7 year vinyl. However, depending on the care of your graphics and weather conditions, your graphics are designed to look good 5-7+ years. (Note: This is only a rating by 3M, who is the manufacturer of the vinyl – it is NOT a warranty offered StickOut)
Yes! The only thing you need to do before applying your car art is clean the car surface area with regular cleaning products (like an all purpose kitchen cleaner and a rag).
Great! Drop us a line at email@example.com. Use the subject line “I want to be involved!”. We’ll talk.
Hopefully, yes! Again, have the designer drop us a line at info.stickout.com with the subject line “I’m a designer!”
Initially we will offer the artwork for the car sides only since our technology would need further development to allow us to cut the stickers for other areas. However you have always the option of purchase the full artwork without cuts and install it anywhere in the car. It may require a little bit more skills depending on where are you looking to install it or the car curvatures.
Hey thanks! Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss how to offer StickOut at your location.
We may not have your exact car model in the website. However, you can get the "uncut" artwork so you can decide where to install it. In most cases it is quite simple and doesn't require special skills. You can visualize the artwork on a newer model just to decide on the general location. Then we can guide you through the installation process.
