About this project
Thanks for visiting my Kickstarter page. With your help, we'd love to release a product into the world that I think is pretty swell.
What Is it?
The Silencer is a simple Xbox 360 accessory with two primary functions: taking the Xbox live chat off of your TV speakers and protecting your kids from profanity from some of the Xbox live members. From these two functions emerge numerous other benefits. The Silencer mutes the mic on your Xbox kenects without changing the settings. When playing split screen, one person can use a mic and the other can use the Silencer to keep game chat from coming through the TV speakers.
So why do we need YOUR help? Simply put, manufacturing is expensive. We want to use recycled 9mm casings to create the Silencer at a level of quality we deem acceptable. Unfortunately this requires a hefty set up cost. By pledging at least ten dollars, you will be essentially pre-ordering a Silencer and helping turn my little project into a reality.
What is the big idea?
The idea for the Silencer was first formed when my son and I were playing a racing game on Xbox live and one of the guys playing with us started to cuss out someone else on Xbox live. I realized then that there is no quick way to shut this off when playing Xbox live. Current solutions for getting the Xbox live chat off your speakers are: changing the game setting (if you want to use Xbox live you have to change the settings back), or plug a mic in, turn the volume down, and turn the mute on, but then you have a cord on your wireless controller! Our goal was to create something that was small, simple, and required no battery power.
The Silencer will be manufactured with recycled 9mm brass casings. This gives it a good finished appearance while reducing waste, as well as, making the product completely recyclable, itself.
I am working with Magnum Engineering in Grand Rapids, MI to make this project happen. In working together with their team, I have been able to make several functional prototypes and we are now ready for manufacturing.
The Silencer has been the labor of love from just one individual: Mark Walters. It will be produced entirely in the USA. Much thought and energy has been put into this project, and I hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it. Additional information can be found at www.tactusgear.com.
So what are you waiting for? Let's work together to make dreams come true.
Risks and challenges
The Silencer is a relatively easy to manufacture product. We've done a pilot run with the actual materials so we can run tests to minimize surprises and work out the kinks. We are seeking the funding needed to cover the cost of the tooling, casings/parts, and Made-in-the-USA manufacturing. Our goal amount is the break-even cost of our first production run (plus the Kickstarter and Amazon fees, as much as 10%). We've set a realistic goal to cover the costs to launch a product that we truly feel is great! We've loved using our Silencer and want to share 'em with you!
I have many years of experience in managing projects with multiple vendors to accomplish large-scale projects. I have many reliable contacts in the industry and can handle vendor changes to keep the project on track and moving forward.
The biggest lesson in manufacturing: Don't promise things that are beyond your control. The only thing not in our control with the Silencer (aside from the US Postal Service) is the manufacturing; though we're confident in Magnum to deliver, we've limited our risk by lining up backup local manufacturer. If we must switch gears and go with another manufacturer, the Silencer will be delayed – but not more than a month because our run is such a small number.
