React! is a revolutionary multiplayer board game and app that can help anyone learn college-level organic chemistry.

Our Kickstarter campaign is to raise money to manufacture React! as an app and board game that can be used by millions of students each year.

React! board game
React! board game

React! is meant for 2 - 4 players. Players buy and trade chemicals, discover and perform reactions, and create special molecules.

The object of React! is to score the most points by the time the game ends. Players earn points by unlocking and performing chemistry reactions. The game ends when a player completes one “Easy,” “Medium,” and “Hard” goal (types of chemistry reactions) or when one player earns 100 points.

  • +4 points for performing a reaction
  • +6 points for discovering a reaction
  • +6 points for an “Easy” goal
  • +10 points for a “Medium” goal
  • +14 points for a “Hard” goal

Players take turns using limited Action Tokens to strategically buy and do “actions,” including:

  • Draw Reagent Cards - Randomly collect chemical ingredients needed for reactions
  • Draw Water Cards - Collect water needed for reactions
  • Draw Event Cards - Exchange or Steal Opponent's Cards; Protect Yourself from Attacking Opponents; Attack an Opponent’s Molecule; Double your Points; Collect Free Points; Go First Next Round; Collect any Reagent; and MORE!
  • Swap - Collect any already used chemicals
  • Discover - Unlock a new reaction
  • Go First - Go first next round
  • REACT! - Use an unlocked reaction and the correct chemicals to complete a goal reaction. Transform a chemical functional group on your molecule.

When players React! to complete goals, they draw new chemical functional groups on their playerboard molecule and earn points.

What if I don’t know Organic Chemistry?

Anyone can enjoy playing React! - from high school students to professional chemists.

Our special-designed cards and Instruction Manual make organic chemistry easy for beginners.

A high school student who played React! told us "Wow! React! is easy to understand and fun! Now, I can't wait to take organic chemistry in college."

Our game cards make organic chemistry easy to follow:

Reagent cards list what reactions they can do: for example, 2-bromobutane can do Elimination (E2) and Nuclear Substitution (SN2) reactions. Reagent cards also list what other chemicals they should be matched with to do reactions. For example, to do an Elimination reaction, 2-bromobutane should be played with tert-butoxide.

Reagent Cards: 2-bromobutane and tert-butoxide
Reagent Cards: 2-bromobutane and tert-butoxide

Reaction cards have words and pictures to describe what they do, and what chemicals are needed to do their reactions. For example, an E2 Elimination reaction requires the chemicals 2-bromobutane and tert-butoxide to form butene: it “converts a bromine to a double bond.”

Want more explanation about the molecules and chemistry reactions?

Don’t worry if the vocabulary and chemistry still went over your head! Our easy-to-read React! Educational Manual explains the fundamentals and details of organic chemistry.

Each card has a reference number in the bottom left corner. Players can used that to look up chemicals and reactions in our Educational Manual.

React! makes organic chemistry easy! A UC Davis student taking organic chemistry who played React! told us "This is the first time I've felt excited about organic chemistry."

Hundreds of high school and college students have played and given us feedback about React! They have helped us make React! a revolutionary study tool. UC Berkeley organic chemistry professors have also helped us make the game college-course level.

React! is:

  • Affordable: Owning React! is like having a private tutor, but without recurring fees.
  • Fun for everyone:  Anyone can play React!, from high school students to professional chemists. Our Educational Manual and special-designed playing cards can help anyone learn organic chemistry. By playing React!, beginners can explore and gain confidence about organic chemistry. Even, chemistry professors love React!

  • Offers pen-to-paper practice of organic chemistry concepts: React! player boards make practicing organic chemistry concepts easy. When players discover and perform reactions, they draw and transform chemical functional groups to create new molecules.
  • Has no time limit: Unlike tutoring sessions or lectures, React! has no time limit and students can learn from it at their own pace.
  • Promotes group learning: Unlike reading textbooks and doing homework, which can make students feel isolated and overwhelmed, React! promotes group learning. Students can learn organic chemistry while they play React! together in a entertaining environment.
  • Provides reliable, class-relevant information: As organic chemistry students and teaching assistants we know our stuff. We understand what skills are needed to succeed in organic chemistry. UC Berkeley organic chemistry professors have even helped us make React! class-relevant.

Organic chemistry is a leading reason students avoid STEM careers – from medicine to bioengineering to genetics. Nationally, an estimated 30,000 would-be doctors do not get accepted to medical school, many because of organic chemistry. In fact, at UC Berkeley, organic chemistry has twice the fail rate compared to other courses. Many students are not prepared for organic chemistry in college because unlike biology, physics, or calculus, it is not taught in most high schools.

In their organic chemistry classes, UC Berkeley undergrads Prerak Juthani and Billal Ahmed saw hundreds of overwhelmed and stressed students. As UC Berkeley organic chemistry tutors and teaching assistants, they helped many puzzled students by making problem solving a game.

That is why they created React!

React! is a revolutionary multiplayer game that can help anyone learn college-level organic chemistry. React! is fun for everyone - from beginners to expert chemists.

Developed by 13 UC Berkeley Chemistry and Biology students, React! makes learning organic chemistry fun by turning it into a puzzle, instead of having to memorize an overwhelming amount of facts.

Out of 320 international submissions, business leaders chose React! as one-of-three winners of the Big Ideas startup competition, UC Berkeley’s global entrepreneurship competition.

React! has hundreds of students - from UC Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, and more - playtesting and volunteering to advertise React! The response is overwhelming. We have received hundreds of social media followers and emails from students eager to play React!

“Fun game!” says the Director of Undergraduate Chemistry at UC Berkeley, Dr. Anne Baranger.

“Super engaging,” says UC Berkeley Chemistry professor, Dr. Pete Marsden.

Our Kickstarter campaign is to raise money to make the game an app and board game that can be used by millions of students each year.

“Our game is the rocket,” says React! Founder, Prerak Juthani, “We need your fuel. Help us launch!”

  • Q: How can I contact the React! Team? A: Please email us at ochemboardgame@gmail.com OR message us on Facebook. We look forward to hearing from you!
  • Q: How much organic chemistry does React! teach? A: React! covers laboratory chemical synthesis and mechanisms, a major part of most first semester organic chemistry classes.
  • Q: What is the recommended age for playing React!? A: Although players of any skill level can play, we recommend React! to high school students and up.
  • Q: Can React! be used in a classroom? A: Yes! Students of any skill level can learn organic chemistry together when they play React! in a group. React! also lets students practice college-level organic chemistry synthesis and mechanisms. React! can be used as a course supplement learning material.
  • Q: What Organic Chemistry topics are not covered in React!? A: The React! covers the major concepts in organic chemistry, it does not cover stereochemistry, molecular orbitals, or pH in great detail. Please keep in mind that React! Is a course supplement and is not designed to replace a class curriculum.

Risks and challenges

Our photos show a variety of React! prototypes. Since we are continually improving our game, your React! set may contain different, higher quality parts than what is shown in the photos.
