What I'm Doing...
I am trying to raise funds for the distribution of my documentary film, "The Weird World of Blowfly." The film is about Clarence Reid, the provocative and pioneering musician from Miami who, for over 40 years, has been performing as Blowfly, the original dirty rapper, and recorded what might be the world's first rap song, "Rap Dirty," back in 1965. But Clarence's story doesn't end there... In the 1960s and '70s, Clarence was also a mainstream singer and songwriter, penning Top-10 hits for southern soul greats like Betty Wright and Gwen McCrae. He even wrote KC & The Sunshine Band's first hit, "Sound Your Funky Horn." Shot over the course of two years, the film follows Clarence as we see his life, career and philosophy unfold. A revealing portrait of an unheralded man, "The Weird World of Blowfly" explores Clarence's legacy and celebrates his musical and cultural significance as a rapper and soul music legend.
Why I'm Doing It...
I bought my first Blowfly album when I was in high school, but I didn't know anything about Clarence Reid – the man or his music – until I started researching this documentary, and the more I learned the more I felt compelled to make the film. As I started to spend time with Clarence, the desire to tell his story grew even stronger. Despite a body of work spanning half a century and encompassing 1000 credited songs, Clarence Reid is generally unknown and, although many hip-hop artists credit Blowfly's influence on their careers, Clarence is largely forgotten as the incendiary innovator behind rap music. Throughout his continual struggle for success and recognition, Clarence is charming and funny, sometimes divisive and antagonistic, but always eager to shock and delight audiences everywhere.
So, why Kickstarter?
This is a very cool, very unique chance for everyone to participate in the filmmaking process, and an opportunity for the filmmakers to connect in a meaningful, direct way with Blowfly fans, indie film mavens, music lovers, documentary supporters, or anyone who likes a good story. The documentary has been largely a labor of love but now I need YOUR HELP to give the film its greatest exposure and widest audience. YOU will be an essential part of the process, your donations will help tell Clarence's story to the world, and you'll get some cool stuff, too!
Where does the money go?
ALL of the donated money (minus fees for Kickstarter and Amazon) will go directly to the distribution of "The Weird World of Blowfly" on as many platforms as possible and in as many markets as possible. YOU will be directly helping to get the film out there! The film is partnered with several established companies who specialize in grassroots, independent distribution and every penny will be spent on outlets, promotion, and special events. Send an email to email@example.com with any questions or if you want more information.
How can I learn more about the film?
Go to the film's website: www.blowflyfilm.com. There you can read more, see photos and video, and check out reviews of the film.
After the film is funded, how long until it is released?
We are planning for a late-spring, early summer release in 2011 along multiple platforms simultaneously (theatrical, DVD, VOD, download). Of course we will update you as soon as we have any information.
Can I make a donation as a gift?
YES! That's a great idea, especially at this time of year. Just go through the normal donation process and pay under your name with Amazon Payments. After the film is funded, I will contact you via Kickstarter asking for your address and other pertinent information. Indicate in your reply who you want the gift to go to and I will make sure that person receives the reward.
Can I increase my donation once it’s been made?
YES! You can change your donation at any time before the funding deadline.
Can we exceed the donation goal?
YES! There is no limit on the amount of donations the film can receive.
It would be truly amazing to beat our goal. Extra funds could mean a wider theatrical release, addtional home video and internet formats and outlets, or even special events connected with premieres and other screenings. The sky is the limit!
When will I receive my rewards?
Certain rewards, like thank you cards, stickers, posters and t-shirts, will be sent soon after the project is funded. Credits will also be added as soon as possible. DVDs and digital downloads will available after their commercial release, probably around the same time as the theatrical release. Original songs, private screenings and concerts will be arranged individually (please let me know if you have specific schedule requirements, I will do my best to accommodate them).
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Unfortunately, if we don't meet our fundraising goal no money changes hands, no credit cards are charged and no rewards are sent out. But I very much hope that's not the case and I'll be doing everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen!
Is my donation tax deductible?
Unfortunately, no. We are neither a charitable nor tax exempt organization. But you are helping the film in a meaningful way and you get some cool gifts for participating.
How do we contact you? You can contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to ask me any questions and I promise I will get back to you.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH! And please spread the word to everyone.
