Tera Girardin is a child and family photographer in the Minneapolis, MN area. When her own son was diagnosed with autism, it led her on a mission to photograph children with autism and shine a light on how remarkable they are. “Faces of Autism” is filled with her compelling photographs and messages of inspiration, admiration and celebration. During the course of the 2-year project, she realized not only do we need to raise autism awareness and acceptance but we need to shift our thinking and ADMIRE those with autism for the gifts they are. To value the light and love they bring to the world.
There are plenty of books about autism to tell you about the ins and outs, difficulties, theories, therapies, facts, data, statistics, and all about how hard autism is.
This isn’t that kind of book.
This book chooses to see the beauty and love that resides in each child beyond the diagnosis and sometimes because of the diagnosis. You’ll also hear from their parents about the challenges their child has overcome, the things they’ve learned and words of advice for other parents. And Tera takes you on her own journey so you can see autism through her lens.
If you believe in capabilities vs disabilities, if you believe there is more to a person than the diagnosis, if you believe autism is more than the challenges is presents, then this book is for you. Be inspired and be a part of the autism admiration movement!
Risks and challenges
The book will be 10x10 hardcover and have full color beautiful photographs and inspiring stories about each child. So this is not an inexpensive book to print! However, from day one Tera has had a clear vision what the final product will be. Her background with not only photography but also marketing and design has ensured this project will be a success. Also, working with Wise Ink (a creative publishing agency), she has the support and expertise in the book publishing industry she needs. The risk is this is Tera's first book and there's not another book out there like this, especially in the autism category. However, the time is ripe to be talking about autism in a new light.
The goal of $12,000 is the minimum needed to launch this book into the world. Even with this goal met, some of the publishing costs will be paid for by Tera directly. Ideally the fundraising campaign will raise $15,000 which will cover the production, printing, and distribution costs and some basic marketing. If more than $15,000 is raised, there are plans to do a traveling art display and exhibit at various autism conferences and walks or art centers.
Currently the book manuscript and photography is complete and is now in editing and design with the plan to print in February 2017. The release date will be April 2, 2017, which is World Autism Day! Books ordered now will be delivered in late March 2017.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
