About

You asked for female investigators and/or suspects cards.

London 1888 is originally a French language bestseller board game from 2005 and is being published for the first time in English by Aka Games with updated rules, cards and map board. This edition includes additional components, which enhances game play.

Two horrific murders were committed in London at the end of 1888. The victims were Emma Smith and Martha Tabram. That autumn, for three months, Whitechapel, in East London, was terrorized by a serial killer who came to be known as Jack the Ripper.

After committing five more murders, he suddenly stopped. Scotland Yard never solved the case and, to this day, the identity of the killer remains a mystery.

The players will personify some of the main characters of this horrific drama: they will be investigators, suspects, or both. One of them will secretly be Jack the Ripper and will have to escape, alone or with some help before being revealed and arrested.

This is the second revised edition, which includes more cards, more characters, more options and revised rules. In London 1888, the board game, players do not always rely on the same strategy in order to win. Investigation, roleplaying and bluffing are very important parts of the game. Every session is immersive, different and exciting and may take from 90 minutes to 4 hours to play. It may be much more if the players decide to use a lot of role-play to add even more fun to the session.

A few words from the author :

"In 1989, after watching a television production by David Wickes starring Michael Caine, I started reading everything I could lay my hands on about the Whitechapel murderer. Like a detective, I picked up the trail, examined every clue and every lead… It was captivating. I wanted you to share my passion for this investigation, let you take part in it. Creating this game gave me the perfect opportunity to do so.
Discovering the identity of Jack the Ripper is a challenge that has attracted me for many years. The number of suspects is incredible, and even included famous writer Lewis Carroll. However, more than a century later, no one has been able to find a definitive solution to the mystery. Except you, maybe…"

The artwork and content for the core box and electronic supplements are already done. Translations are nearly over. London 1888 is a finished, tested game, played during many conventions. This brand new version was enriched with new rules, new cards and offers more options, while keeping the sheer originality of the game. We are now presenting the game through Kickstarter because it enables us to offer London’s old fans a brand new version of this game we love, and in English this times!

Here is a gameputing podcast and a press release in english about London 1888 :

If you are interested in the gothic victorian theme, there is another Kickstarter you may want to take a look at: The Elephantman is a comic book about a fictional version of John Merrick, set in 1886. The atmosphere and graphics are dark and gloomy, just like in London 1888. There are afew days left on this Kickstarter, and we wish it our best!

Disclaimer : London 1888's backstory entails gruesome murders of prostitutes at the end of the XIXth century, in destitute boroughs of this city. Some of these cards can be quite explicit, and may offend sensitive people. Needless to say, this is not a game for children. But in the end, London 1888 is more about stopping a horrible murderer.

In London 1888, you are either Innocent or Jack the Ripper. The other players are supposed to discover who Jack is, before the five murders are drawn from the Event deck, by revealing one of the four possible Identity cards placed in front of the players.

The players will personify some of the main characters of this horrific drama: they will be investigators, suspects, or both. One of them will secretly be Jack the Ripper and will have to escape, alone or with some help before being revealed and arrested.

Let's have a look at a Character card, for example, Detective Abberline of the Metropolitan police.

Under his portrait, there is a box where his special abilities and limitation are explained. He may interrogate the Prince, but he can't arrest him. He may enter the Police station, but not the Royal Palace. Some red scratches around the box symbolize your life points left. It's very useful with the "no dice movement rule" (2 squares + your life points left). You can flip your card in order to keep the right number of life points in front of you. If you're injured, you will walk away less easily. But you can still use your carriage card... if you can get one.

One Event card is drawn at the beginning of each turn. Among them are the five main murders. When all these Murder Event cards are drawn, Jack has won. But before that, many other events may influence the turn (for example, a defamatory article in the newspapers, or a letter from Jack).

You can draw two Action cards at the beginning of your turn without showing them to the other players. They are supposed to help you to make money, escape, slow down the other characters or avoid bad Events.

Of course, you can fight and many weapons are available. You can find them (in stores or at the black market), buy them or pick an Action card revealing where a weapon is hidden.

You may choose between knifes, fire arms, or more unusual ones like chloroform. Your choice.

The Core box content is available starting at Ten Bells Pub's pledge with four complimentary exclusive HQ digital wallpapers.

We offer two Kickstarter exclusive PDF documents. The London chronicles (around 20 pages) is a small game extension with additional rules, and An Autumn of Terror (between 16 and 20 pages) is a guide and a biography of all the suspects in the Ripper's case.

All unlocked stretch goals will be Kickstarter exclusive, which means they won't be available outside of the Kickstarter. They can offer beautiful exclusive Action, Weapon or Event cards, digital booklets or extensions, new exclusive characters to play and, if we go high enough, miniatures to replace player tokens!

London 1888 will be sent to the backers before any other release in conventions or retail distribution, if any.

Of course, these stretch goals are only the first ones. We'll add more of them regularly, later.

Risks and challenges

London 1888 is already a finished game (tested, illustrated, laid out). We have been working for five years in order to produce this final version for the English speaking market. We honed the illustrations, changed and clarified rules, slightly modified the board, created new cards and added optional rules.
This English version is quite different from the first French version. It conveys even more mystery, immersion, bluffing and a dark atmosphere rather than pure strategy.
The only delay from our side will be with translation, and maybe some of the last stretch goals, not the core game box.
Delays in production and/or shipping may be an issue for any game publisher. However, we will do everything in our power to ensure that games are delivered promptly and on time, and before any store. Please understand that there is always the chance of unexpected delays that are out of our hands.
We have already put a lot of time, efforts and research into manufacturing and solving logistical issues, so we are confident in our release date.
