About

UPDATE!! All of our 'pack' rewards now include a Digital Download subscription for Year One AND Year Two in epub or pdf format. That's 10 issues! Included in: The Special Thanks Pack, The Postcard Pack, The Writer Pack, The Poster Pack, and The Complete Pack.

Waylines is a speculative fiction magazine that publishes science-fiction, fantasy and horror AND streams short genre films. In our first year we published 14 stories and screened 18 films. Now we're back to make Year Two a reality!

Waylines is available for FREE at http://www.waylinesmagazine.com. In each issue we feature 2 to 3 short works of fiction, 1 editorial, 3 films, 1 or 2 interviews and for Year Two, we are hoping to add poetry and comics to the mix.

While all of this is free to the reader, it is only possible if we can pay for the work done for Waylines. We pay pro-rates to our hardworking authors ($.06 a word for fiction, $20 flat fee for poems, and $40 a page for comics). Your dollars will go directly towards paying them and towards a few other fees like server space.

In the past year we published some stellar fiction from authors like Jake Kerr, Eric Del Carlo, and Anaea Lay. For our films, we screened some amazing pieces from up and coming directors like David Karlak, Colin Levy, and Patrick Jean. And in every issue we've done interviews with the likes of Ken Liu, Cat Rambo, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, and Aliette de Bodard. But the best way to see exactly what we do is to checkout the magazine at http://waylinesmagazine.com. You can see our Fiction Archives or our Film Archives to go through everything we've run in Year One.

To get a quick taste of what Year Two will be like here is a quick rundown of Year One:

For Year Two we'd like to expand Waylines. One of our goals has been to make Waylines a place where the various communities of sci-fi can intermingle and possibly get a taste of the other formats. Now we'd like to add poetry and comics to that mix.

In Year One, Waylines was a bi-monthly magazine featuring 2 to 3 stories an issue. Now we are trying to consolidate our issues into meatier quarterly issues. For 2014, we plan on releasing issues in the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter with each issue featuring:

  • 3 short stories

  • 3 short films

  • 1 or 2 interviews (including The Writers Room)

  • 2 poems

  • 1 to 3 comics (between 1-4 pages each)

Darryl Knickrehm - Co-Founder / Editor-In-Chief / Illustrator

A director/writer with seven short films under his belt, a two time finalist in the Illustrators of the Future 2013, and co-founder/producer of the Kansai International Film Festival, Darryl is a fan of science-fiction and horror. As he did with Year One, Darryl will edit short fiction and select films for streaming. He will also be back to do the illustrations for Year Two.

Dawn Bonanno - Managing Editor

Dawn is a graduate of Viable Paradise whose fiction has appeared in Bards and Sages Quarterly and Nature. She will be managing all the wonderful submissions that Waylines gets.

Beth Cato - Poetry Editor

Beth's shorter fiction has appeared in Flash Fiction Online and Daily Science Fiction and her book will be coming out from Harper Collins Voyager in 2014. Beth runs our poetry section.

Alisa Alering - Columnist

Alisa is a graduate of Clarion West Workshop, was the 1st place winner of Writers of the Future 2Q 2012, and her fiction has appeared in Flash Fiction Online, Everyday Fiction, and Aqueduct Press. Alisa runs The Writers Room.

And last, but certainly not least, we have our First Readers - Micaiah Evans, Ewan Forbes, Marina J. Lostetter, Emi Morimoto, and Sandra Odell.

If we are successfully funded, you will get a year of Waylines speculative fiction and film. In addition, we have a lot of goodies for our supporters. Each is described in detail on the side.

Also, each of our 'pack' rewards' will include a Digital Download subscription for Year One and Year Two in epub or pdf format. That's 10 issues!

With a donation to any of the Packs, you will get access to our Zero Issue. It is a special issue we make available to only our Kickstarter supporters. It features origin stories and articles about Waylines, but more importantly it features a story from Sandra Odell, an interview with Maurice Broaddus, and a short film made specifically for the issue: Life Lessons to Learn from a Kappa. This is only available to you Kickstarters.

Risks and challenges

One challenge will be finding the right kind of story. In our first year we received around 2000 submissions. We believe if we can continue to pay pro rates the amount of stories we receive should not be a problem.

Another challenge will be finding filmmakers interested in streaming their video. So far, however, filmmakers have been quite enthusiastic to take part in Waylines.

For our new sections (poetry and comics), the work that is published can only be determined by the amount of poems/comics people submit. We think that poetry submissions will not be a problem. We are uncertain about comic submissions however, so the ability to publish 1 to 3 comics an issue is up in the air.
