Introducing the "Whorl" EDC pocket/neck/keychain folding knife - a Re~Evolution of the Oval and Round Stone knives used by our ancestors where scrapping, cutting, skinning and chopping was more important than stabbing.
Design, Imagination and Innovation have been the keystone of man's rise in the animal kingdom. The slight tweak in our DNA which are only a few percentages points apart from our ape relatives, but those key differences have set us a world apart as a species.
The knives used today after thousands of years of design and material evolutions are not that far removed from those initial designs - the difference is really only in the materials and the processes we use in making a cutting tool.
I wanted to pay homage to that initial innovation with a neck/keychain/pocket EDC knife that is easy to carry and used, but stood out in look and feel - Pocket Jewelry.
- Blade: M390 Stainless Steel
- Handle: Milled from a Solid Block of Grade 5 Titanium (6AL-4V)
It takes time to get use to its shape and use, but our ancestors with their round and oval stone knives on an instinctual level knew what they needed to get the job done - survival is much more than stabbing with a sharp point.
The Whorl's blade is M390 Steel and its Handle is Titanium --- An Upgrade from Flint and Stone.
The Whorl is a beautiful design which is useful for day to day EDC Folding knife needs. It is perfect for survival needs playing off the same issues that our Ancestors needed to conquer. It is small and non-threatening, but is built in the same standards and materials as high class jewelry and serious cutting tools.
Below is the Prototype being opened and closed - it should be notated that the production version will have caged bearings and a professionally sharpened blade - it will open like silk and be razor sharp:)
Sharpening will be done by a Professional Sharpening Service - Razor Edge LLC who has made tooling and jigs specifically for this project.
Risks and challenges
No project comes without its challenges.
I continue to learn with every Campaign. In our last EDC Knife we used a single man shop and every issue seriously effected our fulfillment date. We will be moving to a larger shop with a better ability to stay on schedule.
Lesson's Learned has taught me under fire and brimstone the kinds of problems that can arise in production and how to squash them effectively and professionally.
I have completed the final design and worked out the bugs in prototype production
If this project funds and in order to fulfill we will need to:
1. Large Production Run with lower cost -- Manufacture has been tried and tested with a small final prototype production run already completed, inspected and finalized by myself and other designers and makers on KickStarter and the Custom Knife World.
2. Finishing and Laser Marking -- We have set-up services with the manufacturer. Sharpening will be done by a Professional Sharpening Service - Razor Edge LLC who has made tooling and jigs specifically for this project.
3. Fulfillment -- We do our fulfillment in house to offer direct communication with our backers. Our experience on our last projects have helped us develop accurate fulfillment protocol.
I think honesty and keeping funders in the loop is critical to building a reputation. It is not always a clean and easy process, but the end product will be worth any challenges we face.
The success of this project depends heavily on getting the word out. Every blog or social networking post counts, so please share. Thank you for your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
