The [ WRITE ]
In complete darkness,
The light of a FireFly...
Can shine as bright as the stars.
Darriel K. Caston
Writing is an experience. The flow of words on any medium is your thoughts, your ideas, your memories, your hellos and goodbyes that are manifesting into existence...becoming real.
The [ IDEA ] from the [ Garage ] to [ You ]
I love pens and I love flashlights and I love glow-in-the-dark products. A flashlight requires power, glow materials do not...they are charged by the light around us...it just seem a natural evolution to meld a pen with the elements of light.
I have been creating designs on 2D CAD and out of my garage for the last 20 years. When the capabilities of 3D CAD started to show promise I was intrigue. 3D software became another toy to play with and to develop designs...then came the ability to 3D print products...things started to really come together. Designs that were not possible in a conventional garage workshop, became a possibility with 3D software and sending it off to a 3D printer.
3D software allowed me to conceptualize the wildest things.
The first versions of the FireFly was designed on the computer and printed in 3D plastic. But the ability to print it in metal was not refined enough at this time unless you used silver which was way to expensive and the plastic was not tough enough.
3D software not only allowed me to manipulate the workings of the pen on the computer screen, but also translate it into a machine language for a CNC or a CNC Lathe. This allowed me to electronically send my designs to a machine shop and have the parts carved and cut out of High Tech metals. It is not as cheap as printing in plastic, but the results are so much more satisfying.
Manufacturing and Production
[MADE IN THE USA]
To make the FireFly Pen a reality I will be working with US manufactures that are veterans of the KickStarter Process. An Aerospace Company, will take my design and manufacture the pen's body and parts.
The FireFly comes in Titanium and Aluminum (clear, red, blue and black) in a smooth machined finish. We are looking into adding PVD black coating, a bead-blast finish and a mirror polish to the Titanium plus more colors for the Aluminum depending on funding support; and quite possibly another metal, Brass.
The ink cartridge at this time is a Space Pen Refill, but we will be prototyping a Parker Standard cartridge to allow for an even larger selection.
ProtoParadigm, the creators of the Lumi-Cord, will be working with me on the manufacturing of the glow inserts that are in the top cap of the product. We have the blue-green that you see in the pictures and we are working toward a bright green glow.
The [ GLOW ]
With exposure to an [ Intense Light Source ] like the sun, standard fluorescents or black-light, the Glow insert will keep a brilliant long lasting discharge before gradually returning to its standard strength over the course of a couple of hours. The color and the intensity is absolutely gorgeous in daytime shade and magical at night.
48 hours later, the GLOW of the insert will still be detectable in the dark after that earlier exposure to an ambient light source.
The makers of the Lumi-Cord KS Project [ Link to Lumi-Cord ] will be providing me with the Glow Inserts for the [ FireFly ] Pen.
We were asked if the ink will also be glow-in-the-dark - it will not - you will receive a standard ink cartridge with your pen.
You get [ BOTH ] - Green & Blue Inserts
Many [ Standard ] Cartridges
If [ FUNDED ] - the fun and the fulfillment process begins...
Using Pen Prototype - ProtoParadigm will start prototyping and fitting the Glow Inserts into the cap of the pen.
Put in the order for the Springs and Ink Cartridge
Put in a order with ProtoParadigm to start manufacturing of the Glow Inserts.
Put in a order for the material for the pen and it's parts.
Produce next phase Prototype of Pen, quality control and test functionality of pen and parts.
Make any correct any issues with Pen and Finalize Design (Internal Cavity of Cap will remain constant).
Receive the Glow Inserts, test fit in prototype pen.
Start production of the pen and it's parts.
Quality control and testing to ensure functionality.
Final inspections and prep the for shipping.
Packing and shipping of the first orders. ZEN!
Why I [ need ] you?
Your funding will help me pay for the Final Round of Prototyping and Tooling for the pen and its parts and working toward modifying the pen to accept a multiple of cartridges.
It will also help me with the testing the formulas for the glow material and the tooling for production of the Glow-In-The-Dark material to get an optimal product that works well for military missions as well as that writer who gets an idea in the middle of the night and needs their pen to capture it.
A [ Unique ] Pen
The instrument in which you write should add to your creative space, building that setting is something unique and different for each and everyone of us. The tool you use is as important as the mind, body and spirit that wields it.
My Farther had spent 33 years in the military. I am a military brat. I consider our brave warriors a part of our extended family. I have great respect for what they do and what they sacrifice. For our military personnel the FireFly pen becomes a tool that is easier to find in the low light confines of a tank, a cockpit, a sub or a ship.
For the writer the glow of the FireFly is an object of inspiration - the light that reveals those ideas hiding within our creative mind. It will also make it easier to find it on the nightstand when that burst of inspiration hits you in the middle of the night.
For your Loved Ones the FireFly becomes a perfect gift, a symbol for a special person that will always be the light of your life.
For the pen collector, the FireFly is something different, a piece of functional art made of high tech and high quality materials.
The FireFly is a clean simple design made with high tech materials and processes, but still retains the elegance of Old World Craftsmanship.
The FireFly pen is balance. It is tactile. It is visual. It is art. It is a Fine Quality and Unique Glow-In-The-Dark Pen that will set you apart.
