About

This project will help fund the final production costs of the Aviatrix Amelia Earhart Reproduction Jacket. The funds will be used to purchase materials and tools required to produce the jacket.

The name Aviatrix is a French word meaning woman aviator. It was a commonly used term for women pilots during the 1920's - 1930's. In fact, Amelia Earhart was referred to as "The most famous Aviatrix". So what a fitting name for the exact reproduction of one of her favorite Flight Jackets. AVIATRIX

The design of the jacket is much like the A-1 flight jacket from the same era (1920's-1930's). We have a lot of experience with re-creating flight jackets from this time period through our past projects, the A-1 and the 37J1 flight jackets. These jackets can be seen on our website:

http://www.headwindmfg.com/jackets.html

These jackets were re-created through painstaking research and procurement of the proper materials to make them as authentic as possible. A lot of the same materials and construction would have been used on Amelia's jacket because they were the finest and most durable materials available at the time. This jacket will be a hard working, durable jacket. A quality flight jacket for women, as well as a nice fashion piece.

.1920-1930's Materials Used: 100% genuine chrome tanned Capeskin leather, 100% wool knitted wrist and waistbands, genuine vintage horn buttons, 100% cotton sateen liner, 100% cotton thread, and a reproduction 1920-30's Talon Hookless Zipper, the type used for many leather jackets in the 1920's - 1930's. Here's a Wiki link on the Hookless: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talon_Zipper

The initial pattern design for the prototype has been completed. Now funding is needed for the labor costs and some specialized tools, materials and equipment to bring this project to completion, and make it available to the public for purchase.

Risks and challenges

The greatest challenge with bringing the project to market is the potential for production delays from supply shortages. The parts that go into our jackets are as historically accurate as possible. Obtaining these materials can only be done through specialty vendors as they are not available through the large commercial suppliers. As a result, there are delays associated with the ordering, turn around time, and shipping the materials to the leather shop from the various vendors. For example, we have had delays on the delivery of the knits. Our vendor was recently out of a color we ordered for some pending jackets, and we had to wait for his factory to make more. This caused huge delays for the customers that were waiting and pushed the delivery time well past the promised date.
This issue will be easy to overcome with funding because we will be able to order larger amounts of supplies, and have them on hand when the orders get placed. Rather than having to order additional supplies and wait for them to arrive before starting on the production of the order.

The completion of the Aviatrix jacket is an easily obtainable goal and is really only dependent on the funds to complete the project. We make similar jackets currently for sale on our website on an ongoing basis. So we have the expertise and access to the materials, to make top quality reproduction jackets. The only thing holding up the project is the capital to move forward. Your support will help bring this Amelia Earhart reproduction jacket to fruition. My hope is that this project can be completed and that it can contribute to preserving the memory of this legendary woman aviator.
