About this project
Get your Genuine German Garden Gnome here!
Who are we? My name is Andrew Franz-Gustav Maurer, partner and operator of The Gnome’s Trove and I’ll be your host through this tour. We’re located in the historic section of downtown New Ulm, Minnesota and specialize in being a venue for local artisans to display and sell their creations.
What have we done? With our name being The Gnome’s Trove it only makes sense to have gnomes available for our guests and so over this last holiday season my wife and I created over a dozen Gnome Christmas Ornaments that we gave away with an in-store purchase and they were a great success.
How'd you do it? These gnomes were made from scratch using high quality ceramics. Each one was lightly sanded to remove any rough areas, hand painted and then sealed to provide extra strength and durability.
So, now what? Because they were so well received and considering the nature of our business, it seemed like a bright idea to create our own line of handcrafted gnomes. So we started with doing more research and found that ceramic garden gnomes are believed to have been first created around 1840 in Dresden, Germany. This is very beneficial to our project as New Ulm is a community with deep German roots; we’re home to Schell’s Beer, Herman the German and Hengel Concertinas.
Cause & Effect & Cause. Although we can continue to make handcrafted gnome ornaments, we want to expand on what we are able to create. To do this we need to invest in some large equipment, a kiln for example, that will enable us to create garden gnomes up to 12” tall as well as some extra materials needed to produce a few extra gnomes for display so people know they can come to us for the gnomes they want. We also want to create a variety of garden gnomes and their accoutrements. We want to create larger gnomes from clay, glaze them and then fire them to life!
A Rare Honey Pot. The limited, numbered gnomes created for this project are exclusively for our supporters. Once we've completed fulfillment the casts and molds used to create your garden gnomes will be retired.
Making It Sweeter. We're also working on stretch goal bonus ideas such as ceramic mushrooms and Gnome Home Doors and would love to hear your ideas for stretch goals as well! Most importantly, you are helping to bring heritage back to the world of Garden Gnomes.
To reiterate. Through this project we want to make available, genuine handcrafted German garden gnomes and accoutrements. Depending on your pledge amount you can receive a simple "Gnaked Gnome"; a 4" tall handcrafted, raw Gnome all the way up to a 12" tall, glazed and life-fired Gnome.
Thank you in advance for your pledge!
Update #01 - 1/7 Below is a working image of the reward for supporting us at the $1.00 level. Your name will be listed on this as well as on our website. Please spread word of this project, we'd really appreciate it, thank you.
Update #02 - 1/8 My lovely wife pointed out to me that our rewards for $1.00 and $5.00 supporters could be mobbed since they were set to unlimited and I could be spending weeks, if not months working to get everyone's name on the banner and website; so I had to limit how many supporters we can accept at those levels. Thank you for understanding.
Risks and challenges
Because this project requires very little outsourcing the obstacles are few.
Time is the largest beast lurking in the shadows due to the variety of the rewards we are offering, but I believe our timetable for fulfillment minimizes this issue as we already have the kiln, mixer and pug mill selected. When this project is backed successfully this equipment can be ordered and delivered within a month of the funds being released.
The kiln we have chosen is perfect for our needs and does not require any special permits, but will require additional wiring by a licensed electrician. I've already contacted several local electricians and the timetable for electrical installation is one week. The mixer and pug mill do not require any additional wiring prior to use.
We already have a supplier for clay and glazes so this will not be a cause for delay.
Ultimately there is no foreseeable obstacle that we wouldn't be able to overcome. I create each piece by hand and as long as my hands don't quit working for me this project will be successful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
