About

This is the story of two very close buddies,
whose life and times are worthy of study.
They were two patently opposite fellows
named Stanley J. Streak and Milton B. Mellow.

This is an illustrated children's book about two friends, Stanley Streak and Milton Mellow, who are completely opposite in their personalities and viewpoints. At the beginning of the story, each of them is stuck in his own ways and believes the other one is doing it wrong. One day  there's a disaster in their neighborhood and they're called upon to help. Each of them has to do the opposite of his typical style of doing things in order to solve the problem, but they get it done. Through that experience, they each learn that there's merit in the different perspectives and approaches to life and that it's better stay open to alternative viewpoints.

The book is suitable for ages 3 to 8, and is written in a fun and flowing rhyme, with a level of sophistication that I think will appeal to the older kids and adults alike.

Stanley J. Streak was a man in a flurry,
always in haste and ever in hurry.
Making no mention of bother nor worry,
he just sped on his way in a dash and a scurry.

He was broadly a bold and adventurous guy.
No challenge nor feat would he dare deny.
He craved going quick and he loved climbing high.
And if he could do so, he'd grow wings and fly!

Circling the track going swift race car driving,
jumping from planes going solo skydiving,
scaling tall mountains and soundly surviving:
these were some things in which he was thriving!

His was a life lived nimble and fast.
His need for high speed was certain and vast.
He got it done quickly in all that he passed,
for fun things in life most surely don't last.

Moving more slowly would limit his zest,
so he flatly refused to be suppressed.
"Speed is my way, with this I am blessed.
Life is too short to give it a rest!"

Stanley is adventurous and aggressive, seeks out excitement and challenge, and lives to take risks. But he's also impatient, eats his spaghetti half-cooked, and never finishes what he starts.

Milton B. Mellow was patient and slow,
living a life of ease.
There was never one place that he rushed to go.
He just went with the speed of the trees.

He was clearly a controlled and deliberate man,
fixing his days in routine.
Always equipped with a definite plan,
he avoided the unforeseen.

He'd do his yoga and exercise gently,
centered in deep meditation.
He'd sit on the sofa and read quite intently,
staunch in his concentration.

He took much time to take great care
in regarding the tiniest things.
Like smelling pink flowers and breathing fresh air,
or watching a butterfly's wings.

Moving more quickly was not in his view.
Too much speed made him nervous.
"Life is too short to whiz and rush through.
Why do yourself such a disservice?"

Milton is calm and patient. He takes the time to notice and enjoy the world around him, and he's fully present to everything he does. But he misses opportunites because he's always waiting for just the right time, needs everything to be planned and known in advance, and he never likes to leave his comfort zone.

I'm a visual artist myself, but I've never been able to find the time to hone my skills to a level where I could illustrate an entire book, so I decided to pass the job on to someone who could. The characters were designed and the artwork for the book was brilliantly done by the ultra-talented Kong Vang. We were in art school together at Cogswell Polytechnical College, and he has contributed his artistic skills to many projects, including two computer-animated short films, one of which has won numerous awards at various film festivals.

The book will be offset-printed in full-color, is 48 pages long, and will be a 10" x 10" hardcover, smythe-sewn with a printed casewrap and dust jacket. Don't be put off by the jargon. That just means that the book will be extremely high-quality and long-lasting! This is not short run print-on-demand. The book will be made entirely in the United States by Phoenix Color, a leading manufacturer of premium quality color books.

All the illustrations have been completed and the book layout is done, so the book will be ready to go to straight print as soon as the campaign is over.

On mild sunny day in June 2012, while I was out on a walk, the idea for my first children's book, Feel the Beat, came to me. Out of nowhere and completely at random, I heard the following lines in my head:

"Feel the beat. Welcome to the rhythm. Wake up all your senses to the treats that you can give 'em!"

I was so intrigued by both the randomness of the event and clarity of what I heard that I spent next the month expanding it into the text for a complete book. As I was doing so, I realized that I could merge my love of visual arts with storytelling and actually create art pieces that mean something, rather than just being nice to look at. In that moment, the seed was planted for my children's book publishing company, Wonderglyph Press.

Stanley Streak & Milton Mellow is the second book in the Wonderglyph Press stable, with one more book in the works. I plan on publishing not just my own books, but also the works of other authors and illustrators.

The mission of Wonderglyph Press is to create compelling and enriching content for children and young adults. Through this, I hope to make a positive impact on their lives and at least a tiny bit of difference in the world. The company will have a standing policy that for every two books sold, one book will be donated to public schools, public libraries, children's hospitals, and other insitutions. Eventually I want to be able to contribute extensively and support organizations like First Book and buildOn that promote education and literacy to disadvantaged children in the US and around the world. And finally, when the company grows big enough, I want to be able to help fund the creation of services and programs in poor or disenfranchised neighborhoods so that kids in those areas can get access to the same level of high-quality education as those in more well-off neighborhoods.

Please help me bring this book to life!

Risks and challenges

Risks in this project are minimal. This is the fourth Kickstarter campaign that I've put up and I'm very well-versed in studying all the aspects of the project and running the numbers to make sure that the campaign goal is realistic and that all avenues are in place to get all the rewards created properly.

In this case, the biggest risk is just the book itself. But all the artwork for the book is done, the layout is done, and I've been communicating with the folks at the printing company for several years now. Once the campaign is over, the book can be sent straight to print. Since the book will be manufactured entirely in the United States, there will be no issues with overseas shipping.

The next biggest issue is with reward fulfillment. If the number of backers is very large, I'll commission a fulfillment company to get all the orders shipped out. That way everyone will get their rewards quickly and correctly.
