First and foremost I want to thank you all so much for looking at our Kickstarter Campaign. My deepest appreciations to everyone who has or will donate, shared words of encouragement, support and believed in our idea. I don’t want you to just believe in our initial product "KnKt'd Mental Health" (for ages 14 yrs and up), but in our Company too!
We have 40 plus (and counting) adaptations off of this initial project to release (Mental Health, Recovery, Foster Care System, Behavioral Classrooms, Medically Fragile Clients, Veterans and even more!). Each one geared to help those in need.
Our company business model will donate a minimum of 15% of our profits to help struggling but amazing non-profits to continue to help those they serve. Another 25% will be used to develop more versions of KnKt’d for Behavioral and Physical Health. We will also utilize that 25% to build or help seed fund programs in communities across the nation that have been shown to work and increase overall wellness.
From the bottom of my heart and everyone who is helping develop our flagship product, THANK YOU!!!!!
Quotes from Supporters:
“When we think of mental health, we so rarely think of the web, the network of supports we have around us that secure us, connect us and enrich us. We so rarely even think of “Health” when we say ‘mental health’. So often we refer to mental illness, the deficits and deficiencies that lead us to the dark and hard places in our lives. When I talk about revolutionizing mental health care what I mean, and what Synergistic Creations means is just that: Taking Back the Word Health in Mental Health.
It’s time that we start thinking about how we enrich and support the lives of others around us. Whether that is a person we see every day or a person across the country we see rarely. What if, like many of my friends, you had a therapist who you could tap into all day and night? What if you had a support network that was organized as well as your Facebook or Google contacts? What if you had a place to ask the questions and get the answers about how to improve your mental health? What would that look like? It would look like KnKt’d.” (J. Leykam via Facebook, 10/19/14).
"Matt- your updates are great. Yes, always, always there is something to be grateful for. And right now I am grateful for you and others involved in this -you are moving toward something that will be so very valuable in many many lives. This will give people a means to move ahead toward wellness in their own lives and what a gift this is. I'm continuing to pray for this venture." (D, Whiting Via Facebook, 10/17/14).
We are all part of a collective experience as we travel on our paths through time. No one should ever feel as if they've traveled alone through any trial of life. The tangles in our behavioral health and health systems need to change. We have in part become a system that is based in the world of triage. It is time for a change and we need to feel connected!
It is no big surprise that we all do better when we have accountability, it should be no different for our physical, emotional and mental health. When we are connected to others we most often do so much better in life. When we feel alone or out of touch, nothing good often comes from it.
In mid-summer of 2014 I started a company in Oregon aimed at changing the way the Behavioral Health and Physical Health providers connect with consumers. The Company's name is Synergistic Creations, LLC. I believe it is a first of its kind technology company for these specifically designated fields.
I have been working with individuals in both fields to help mold the programming and development. The KnKt’d product that is being developed will be released sometime in winter 2014 or early 2015. The aim of the product is to increase connectedness between providers and consumers and may: reduce recidivism, increase accountability, reduce no-show rates, reduce self-harm, increase wellness, decrease costs and length of treatment, increase collaborative treatment approaches, increase person centered treatment and provide data for consumers, providers and funders to help focus treatment approaches and funding allocations.
In its simplest form this is how it works:
1)Decide with your provider to use the system
2)Have the provider pay for the monthly access, log in and input the needed system information
3)Sit down and decide what you want to track
4)Download the app, find your provider on the list
5)Answer your questions every day, then review with your provider at your next appointment. You will both be able to see the progress and places that may need special attention.
The Meat in The Nutshell
KnKt’d is an intricate living system that tracks how your wellness is daily. It uploads the answered questions into a database and aggregates the data into usable view-able graphs. So that each day your providers can log in and see how you are doing and reach out sooner if you need help.
If you are having a rough time and your wellness has decreased past a certain threshold if you so choose it can notify your providers, crisis teams, supports or your family.
Your providers will be able to have the data daily to help focus your treatment with you. Those who fund programs will be able to see what is working and what doesn't seem to hit the mark. This system will be a truly person centered approach to wellness. Because we deserve to feel better and to feel connected.
What We've Done
-My idea was shared and the support and belief happened without little question. By the way an amazing series of articles we should all read is The Cost of Not Caring. By USA Today journalist Liz Szabo
-Initial funders where approached and agreed to help fund KnKt’d
-I reached out to professional friends and family in Behavioral Health to consult (after they signed NDA’s J) pro-bono for the project. Thanks for believing (especially my family)!!! Also big thanks to: Terrie Holland, Sharon Barker, Joe Leykam, Jason & Sally Cook, Martin Rafferty, Daniel, Theresa, Will, Nancy, Tia, Judy, Eric, and so so many others (sorry if I forgot anyone, not intentional).
-I enlisted the help of Richard W Jackson, CPA as my business partner
-Synergistic Creations, LLC was formed
-A lot of time was spent getting myself and others up to speed (on the fly) on the way technology worked and how it could be adapted to my idea. As well as an immense amount of researching and talking with database companies like Caspio and others.
-Through that less than 6 degrees of separation we enlisted the help of the amazing Lisa Lopuck!! If you don’t know her name check out her work at http://www.lopuck.com/portfolio/ and then web search images of Lisa Lopuck watercolors, absolutely amazing. She understood my idea and brought it to life through the wire framing for the project and designing our logos, Thanks Lisa!
-Provisional Patent was submitted to the Feds (Utility Patent is in the works)
-Initial trademark of Knkt’d was submitted to the Feds and the KnKt'd flagship logo was sent in this week!
-We found some amazing Portland, Oregon based developers at Parthenon Software Group https://www.parthenonsoftware.com/ . Thanks Andy Schmitt, Jon Hance, Seiji Hennelly and all the rest. Phenomenal company is all I can say!
-Launched our facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Synergistic-Creations/1466644990273841?ref=hl
-We have started the development process and we are on our way.

Where We’re At
So being someone who works in behavioral health, I grossly underestimated the costs of developing my idea. The reality is in good conscious you can only go back to your funders so many times and say “well, whaaaat whaat happened was”. So here I am now hoping that others will believe too!
Risks and challenges
Risk and challenges! Come on this entire project from beginning to end will be a risk, challenge and a leap of faith. I think any of us who have brought forth our ideas to KickStarter are overladen with risks and challenges. That is the burden that we bare some with more grace than others, but all of us nonetheless.
First and foremost getting the project fully funded is huge and that is the biggest hurdle. We currently before launching our campaign are about 65% funded. Mainly because of the many, many intricacies involved with doing what it is we are doing. The attorney fees, government fees, patent fees, trademark fees, designer costs, development cost, marketing, insurance; the list just goes on and on.
From there it is really just development tweaks, beta testing, more tweaking and marketing, marketing, marketing! Once it’s launched and if it takes off quickly making sure the key company players are in place is a big challenge as well.
I’ll end with saying this, a good friend listed above “Joe Leykam” when I first approached him about this project, he ended our lunch meeting with a warm goodbye and said to some extent “Matt, I know this will work because you are the bulldog of Oregon Mental Health.” That truly has stuck with me and I am beyond thankful for that compliment. What I think he meant is that I don’t give up; I just approach the issue from a different angle and then rinse and repeat. Doesn't matter whether it pertains to my work, advocacy, schooling, family or any other degree of things, I never give up! That may be why one of my personal mantras is something I learned while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Which loosely translated is “There is never a problem, only a solution.”Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
