About

Children of the Apocalypse is a post-apocalyptic epic fantasy setting for Savage Worlds. In Children of the Apocalypse, bold adventurers explore the ruins of our world, seeking lost technologies to empower the creations of Tinker Mages.

"...a very well thought out setting. There is enough of the history and world information to whet your appetite!" Patrick "Shadowdad" Greenlaw, Role Player's Imaginarium

 The Setting

In the world of Children of the Apocalypse, the Nine Gods exert a daily influence on societies, scheming for the advantage of their followers and the downfall of their enemies. The setting book includes a complete Plot Point campaign in which the players contend with the Gods themselves to determine the future of all humanity.

Children of the Apocalypse requires the Savage Worlds core book and the Fantasy Companion.

Players take on the roles of newly-minted adventurers of the city-state of Peterborough, in the service of the Lord Protector. Some might follow the path of the psion, learning the arts of mental power; others might master musketry or fencing; still others could study alchemy or wizardry.

Why Kickstarter?

The Kickstarter for Children of the Apocalypse will fund awesome art and expanded content for the setting book, which already includes 8 new races, new setting rules, a complete Plot Point Campaign, and details of how to convert your hometown into a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

It's Earth! The default setting is an alternate version of New England, but you can easily adapt any local area as a site for adventuring. For the gamemaster, map-making becomes trivial, and for the players, you have the opportunity to repurpose artifacts from our time as magic devices using Weird Science. Toy blaster? Now it has the Bolt power! Use a smartphone for Divination or a French Horn for a sonic Blast.

As you're exploring the ruins of Boston, the undead city of Salem, or the ancient campus of U Mass Lowell, you'll encounter classic fantasy creatures ranging from dragons to chimera, but also hostile warriors of new races like the hideous tannain, scions of the Demon God of Monsters, and the adharca, each one distinct, sharing only one common feature, three horns on their forehead, and their savage cousins, the ogrin.

Adventure isn't limited to ruins, however; plots and politics abound within the new cities that rose after the apocalypse. The city state of Peterborough is beset by the aggressively expansionist Barony of Groton from without, and minions of the dark gods may also lurk within, plotting to acquire forbidden knowledge and perhaps even bring about a new apocalypse.

The Children of the Apocalypse setting book contains:

  • Descriptions of the Nine Gods, their followers, and their motives
  • Eight new races created by the Nine Gods
  • A complete description of post-apocalyptic Boston and the surrounding communities
  • Setting rules to represent a high-magic, high-theology world
  • A complete Plot Point campaign leading to a confrontation with the Gods themselves
  • Guidelines for converting your own hometown into a campaign setting

Sneak Peek: Peterborough

Peterborough (currently in New Hampshire) is the starting point for the players, and their home base - assuming they can prevent its conquest by the neighboring Barony of Groton.

This city of 20,000 is nestled in a shallow valley along the banks of the Contoocook river. The Old City is walled, with the river and the Nubanusit Brook forming natural moats on two sides. The third side is a broad arc rising uphill, and just inside this arc is the Protector’s Keep, where Lord Protector Andrew Hobart makes his residence. The River Gate opens on a bridge across the Contoocook, while the Brook Gate opens on a similar, but shorter bridge across the Nubanusit- the latter is protected by a small gate-fort on the opposite bank. Two landward gates open, one following each upstream road. Market Town lies on the opposite bank of the Contoocook. Here are shops, farmer’s markets, and inns and taverns for the less-prosperous, as well as small river docks for skiffs and barges.

In earlier years, barges coming upriver from the ruins of Proctor carried a wide range of materials for recycling, but Proctor’s wealth is largely plundered, and the river trade is modest today. The Old North Road runs through Market Town, one of the roads of the ancients - to the north, it leads past many farms into wilderness and then to ruined Concord, while to the south, it intersects with the Old West Road, which leads past the allied towns of Dublin and Marlborough to the ruins of Keene. A fork in the Old North Road leads to the allied domain of Charlestown, whose Protector is also a follower of Iset.

To the east, the Old East Road leads to the undead city of Nashua via the outpost town of Wilton, while the Old South Road leads eventually to many ruins as well as the Rahel-controlled city of Groton. Skirting Nashua by day allows an approach to Dracut, the city across the river from the great ruin of Lowell.

Across the Brook Gate lies New Town, where the Greatschool occupies a walled compound just north of the old road. New Town is the dwelling of nobles and clergy, and also boasts the First Hall of the Four and the Shrine of Iset. The Protector maintains a significant armed force of 150 knights, 250 light cavalry archers, 300 pikemen, 400 light infantry, 200 crossbowmen, and 50 musketeers, about half of which are distributed around the domain in nodal fortifications. At present, another quarter are camped on the southeast frontier because of ongoing raids from Groton, and a state of hostilities somewhere short of war exists. The Protector also maintains multiple adepts of various sorts in support of the city and the army. Humans, aleulama, and bastelin form the bulk of the citizens of Peterborough, with many ritters dwelling outside the city in the broader domain. A small colony of sherzi lives upriver of the city and occasionally trades with the city as well, and the Lord Protector considers them part of his protectorate.

Several orders and guilds provide professional support for adepts and warriors. The Order of the River is the Shrine of Iset’s military arm, while the Lorewardens are the corresponding divines. The Order of the Shield is a knightly order specific to Peterborough. The Judges of Rahel have a presence in the town, and the Brotherhood of Tinkers includes both divines of Jonas and practicing tinkers. The Lightbringers are the divines of Edward, and the Order of Light the assemblage of Mages. The Seekers is the guild of psychics.

The base reward is a PDF copy of the setting book fulfilled through DriveThruRPG. Backers at higher levels can receive full-color softcover or hardcover printed books in addition to the PDF.

A limited number of backers can also become characters in the world of the Nine Gods.  At the Guard Sergeant, Treasure Hunter, Champion of the Gods, Lord Protector, or Child of the Apocalypse backer levels, your name (or any other person's name you choose) becomes part of the story - perhaps a hero, an adversary, or a key contact in the campaign.

Want more? The Lord Protector backer level gets you a signed copy of the hardcover edition, and the Child of the Apocalypse gets you a three hour Roll20.net game session run by the creator for you and up to five of your friends.

 $8000

At $8000, we'll add a whole new setting, post-apocalyptic Chicago, to the core book, including a complete description of the complex politics of the area and an adventure set after the end of the plot point campaign.

Risks and challenges

The primary risk for Children of the Apocalypse is delays in art production leading to delays in delivery of the final product. The core content is complete and simply needs layout.
