So What's The Pitch?
This is a poetic take on the Scottish childhood of writer Sean Michael Wilson, draw by Swedish artist Hanna Stromberg. The book mixes together 14 intimate and interesting real life childhood stories and adventures, with a touch of magical realism.
It's all set in one specific location - the woods and streets near Sean's childhood home in the Morningside area of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the late 70's and early 80's. All the action takes place in those woods or the streets around them, a deliberate decision to narrow the story to just that one area. It gives the story a sense of place - and anyway, many interesting things happened there!
No adults are seen in the story, or following the old cartoon tradition of Tom and Jerry, only their feet and lower body are seen - this is a world of children! It's one book, but showing many interesting anecdotes, with some narrative aspects to weave it all together, meaning that there is some reflection from the adult Sean as a ghost like presence hovering over the past scenes.
There is a fluid interweaving of the childhood visuals with adult narration, in a touching poetic way.The book has an opening scene showing the adult Sean going to his childhood area, and beginning to reflect on his past. It's all drawn together at the end, as we see the adult Sean having gone through all that and leaving his childhood place behind.
We've made a special preview pdf of the ONCE UPON A TIME IN MORNINGSIDE book. Showing two full chapters: 'Tough Guy' and 'The Peacock'. It's free, just download it on Sean's site (it's right under the mock cover of the book) and enjoy:
