Tricia Spencer is recording her first solo CD of old-time fiddle tunes, a couple originals, and Carter family style vocals.
I have been exposed to old-time music in the womb of my mama and grew up in a community of players. I started fiddling at an early age taking time off here and there to go to school and have a family. Since 2002 I've been playing seriously again and started playing with The Prairie Acre. The early years of the band were focused on mainly bluegrass but the band started listening and studying old-time music from other regions.
In 2007, the band made their first trip to the Indiana Fiddler's Gathering to see the Foghorn Stringband. It was this festival that literally changed my direction and I fell in love with these new tunes and this type of festival session playing. I started traveling with my kids and mom to other festivals and meeting many talented musicians who were willing to share their tunes and knowledge. I became obsessed with learning and studying source recordings of these old-time fiddlers like Clyde Davenport, John Salyer, Buddy Thomas, The Skillet Lickers, Ed Haley, The Carter Family, Ernie Carpenter, JP Fraley, and the list goes on and on. Through this CD, I am hoping to inspire other fiddlers who can't necessarily travel to these festivals or who don't have these source recordings and hope to help the next generation of old-time fiddlers get started.
I wanted to include folks on the CD that inspired me as a musician and started making the calls. Without the backing, I decided to pursue this goal and went into the studio and churned out 35 tracks. Now with the songs ready, I am asking for support in making this into a full length album. This CD will have a variety of tunes and songs and a variety on instrumentation and was recorded in a live session setting. Joining me on the album is Tim Avalon (Jackson, Mississippi), Joseph Dejarnette (Floyd, Virginia), Doug Dubois (Lawrence, Kansas), Betse Ellis (Kansas City, Missouri), Jack Magee (Jackson, Mississippi), Noah Musser (Lawrence, Kansas), Virginia Musser (Lawrence, Kansas), Cindy Novelo (Lawrence, Kansas), Julie Loats (Lawrence, Kansas), Pat Payne (Lawrence, Kansas), Josie Spencer-Speirer (Lawrence, Kansas), Mark Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio), Greg Yother (Lawrence, Kansas), and Barb Zavon (Cincinnati, Ohio). Recordings were done at Mike West's Ninth Ward Picking Parlor and Jack Magee's Soundwagon Shack.
Money pledged will be used for musicians and their travel, recording, mixing, mastering, art and duplication. However, I do not receive any funds pledged unless my goal is met within the time frame. Your contribution will help me share one of my deepest passions with you and will help spread this deep rooted genre of music with others who don't know they love it yet.
