About

About the Erard

This piano was built in the 1850s in London. It is the forerunner of the modern concert grand and similar instruments would have been performed on by Chopin, Liszt, Clara Schumann to name but a few. These instruments offer an unclouded sonority, separation of register and clarity which enliven music of the 19th Century in a magical way. Hearing music performed on the instruments for which it was written is always illuminating; it opens up aspects of a score which can often seem nonsensical on modern pianos.

Why use an old piano?

Playing Liszt, Chopin, Schumann et al on period Erards has been a voyage of discovery for me and one which I intend to continue. I also want to ensure that another instrument of this kind is available so that more pianists may follow suit. As there are very few instruments of this kind in perfect playing condition and I want this instrument to be used not just by myself, but also by other professionals and music students. See me play and talk about a similar instrument here

Why part with your money?

Aside from the array of awards on offer, this is a unique and very beautiful thing to do. This piano was born a long time ago and, with your help, will outlive us all, taking with it secrets from bygone times which can be reanimated by skilled performers. You will be part of the creation of a time capsule in sound and engineering from the heart of the Romantic period.

About the restoration

The work will be carried out by David Winston who is one of the world's most highly respected restorers. He approaches each instrument on a case by case basis armed with rare sensitivity and encyclopaedic knowledge of the craft, and carried out restorations on pianos which belonged to Beethoven and Chopin.

About me

I am a pianist. This means most of my time is spent practising and travelling around bringing music to the world. I have always loved sound and I have always loved pianos. The modern piano action was, in essence, invented by Sebastien Erard in 1821; it amazes me that this piece of engineering genius with its many components, fragile as a bird skeleton, can conspire to create such an array of timbre...I am in love with my instrument, and I am in love with sharing this passion with audiences as widely as I can. If you wish to know more, please check out my website here.

A massive thank you to Finlay O'Hara for his filming expertise and patience! Also to Lukasz Let for his many helps, David Winston for his time, advice and generosity and my family.

Risks and challenges

Any instrument restoration has an uncertain time frame. Although David has a fair idea what the work will entail there is no certainty until the surgeon opens the body and makes a full diagnosis. We think the work will be completed within a year.
