I’m Gerard Boersma, a 40 year old realism artist from Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. I paint people in modern cities. My favorite themes include painting people on the streets, in stores, public transport or museums.
I paint such scenes in a hyperrealistic manner, very colorful and highly detailed. People often get confused whether they’re looking at a photograph or not. In my work I freeze time so our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly.
For years I’ve been painting small and medium works of art for the internet. I sold them to a worldwide audience through my blog or Ebay and that’s how I generated enough income to paint full time.
However, I always felt I could do even better and that's why I would love to paint something really large (70x48" or 180x120cm). I believe that’s where my true talent lies and I’m dreaming of doing this for a year. I want to reach my full potential as an artist and make high quality paintings that truly leave a lasting impression on the viewer and future generations to come.
The reason why I haven’t been able to paint anything that large is because I always felt it was too risky business wise. It takes up to 4 months without income to create 70x48” painting and I don’t have the reserves to cover such a time period. But with Kickstarter I see an opportunity to make it happen!
For the next 12 months it’s my aim to create 3 large scaled paintings (70"x48" or 180x120cm each) and show them in a really good gallery in New York. I choose this city as the best galleries are located there plus a lot of my work already goes to collectors based in the US.
It makes sense for me to go there and I’m looking forward to visit New York and take my career to the next level. I believe the large paintings will open many doors for me. While in New York I want to take pictures for future paintings and use my already existing network to introduce me to the really good galleries in person.
The paintings I'm planning to create are totally in line with what I'm doing right now: hyperrealism works of art of people in modern cities. I want to paint a museum piece first and go from there.
On my blog, social media and of course Kickstarter I want to keep a public diary so you can see and experience how I create my work. I will show and write about what I’m doing so you can see each painting being born.
I’m excited about this campaign and want to thank you in advance for your support in making my project a reality. Thank you for helping me paint my masterpieces!

Commonplace events and ordinary objects. With my works of art I want to express a deep love for the modern human and contemporary city life.
I paint people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. At first sight these scenes might appear as quite ordinary, but after years of painting I know it's anything but.
Our lives are filled with moments like these. Therefore these moments are important and say a whole lot about todays society too. They show the way people see themselves, interact or are influenced by modern developments in various ways.
I observe and paint what most impresses me. That way I freeze time and those beautiful, but often overlooked scenes are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly.
I'm a professional and international recognized artist for over 15 years well known for my own realistic style of painting.
My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (North America, Europe, Asia, Australia).
Paintings were shown alongside the biggest names in art history at leading art fairs in Europe and United States.
I've studied painting and fine art at the School of Arts Minerva in the Netherlands, specializing in meticulous form of realistic painting. I currently live and work in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

Risks and challenges
Although I haven’t painted a 70x48” painting before, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to paint such a large work of art. I have over 16 years experience as an artist and painted plenty of complex paintings on a smaller scale. I'm sure I can on a larger scale as well.
I have all the rewards lined up and ready to print. No challenges there either. Of course some of them aren't fully ready just yet as they include the paintings I plan on creating for this project. And those aren’t finished yet of course.
The biggest challenge I see is getting my work into a really good gallery in New York. Although I have my strategy on how to approach the gallery all thought out, there is of course the chance they say no. In that case I keep searching for another venue to show my work. If all fails I will stage an exhibition in my own studio.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
