In Waters of Nereus, you direct a crew of seafarers on Nereus, an amazing world of vast oceans with highly valued treasures. Sail your ship through the waters and plumb the oceans for treasures to pay off your crew.
The game occurs over 4 "days" (rounds). The crew members perform a variety of tasks, such as sailing the ship, picking up treasures, providing income, converting gold to victory points, and more. Each day is divided into 4 phases. In Phase I: Discovery Phase, a discovery card is flipped and treasures are placed in the ocean as directed by the card. In Phase II: Action Phase, all players simultaneously choose and reveal a crew member to employ. In turn order, players execute the crew actions. This process is repeated 4 times, so each player performs 4 different actions per day. In Phase III: Explorer Phase, players may perform a bonus action (for a cost in gold). In Phase IV: Conclude Phase, prepare for the next round by retrieving crew member cards and passing the sun and sand timer (which are used for establishing turn order in Phase II).
The game has a great amount of player interaction, suspense, and tactical guesswork due to the simultaneous action selection mechanic in which crew member powers decrease in efficacy each time a crew member type is chosen. For example, if you are the first to choose the Purser, you earn 6 gold, though the next person only earns 5 gold. You must seriously consider what your opponents might do, while also making sure you choose the actions that help you.
Multiple Paths to Victory
The game also provides multiple paths to victory. Should you focus on paying off your crew? Gaining money and buying your way to victory with the merchant? Or steal the victory at the end with your hidden science cards? Or, perhaps, you try a balanced approach that utilizes the multiple ways of scoring points.
The game is beautifully illustrated by Beth Sobel, one of the most talented illustrators in the board game business. For the crew cards, she illustrated 28 separate character portraits. The image below shows the artwork, though separated from the cards.
All backers of this project at the $40 level or higher will receive a 5-card Kickstarter exclusive "Daily Objective" expansion pack. The 5-card pack will be expanded if we hit certain stretch goals.
This pack adds a nice twist to the base game by giving an additional option to consider. On each day, a daily goal is revealed and a player is awarded the card by performing the goal. However, if another player performs the same goal during that day, that player steals the card. In other words, the player who last performs the daily goal is awarded the card and the points associated with it. Since much of the game is trying to use your crew members first, this gives incentive to wait it out a little, adding an interesting decision point in the game.
Many pledge levels provide an opportunity to pick up multiple games designed by Steve Finn. Information about the games, include video reviews, is found further down on this page.
Kickstarter Promos for Add Ons?
Some of the combos include special promotional items and some do not. All of the pledge levels above include the Waters of Nereus pack. For the other games, read on:
Sunset Over Water: The promo pack for Sunset Over Water is not included, nor is it available from Dr. Finn's Games. Although the game was primarily designed by Steve Finn, it was published by Pencil First Games.
Cosmic Run: Rapid Fire: The tech tools promo pack is available, but you must add $4 to your pledge level to receive it.
Cosmic Run: Regeneration: The Allies expansion pack is included, but the custom wooden space ship tokens are not. You can add $10 to the pledge level to replace the square tokens imprinted with a ship icon for ship shaped tokens.
Little Flower Shop: The flower-filler promo will be included, but the 5th player expansion is not. Please add $7 to that pledge level to receive the 5th player pack.
C.O.G.: The Dr Widget Promo pack is not included in the level, but can be added to the level for $7.
Want to customize your pledge level?
If you want to customize your pledge level, please read the information below about adding games to your level.
If you are in the U.S., you may add funds to your pledge level to acquire additional Dr. Finn's Games at discounted prices. With flat rate shipping, you also save because there is no additional shipping cost. To add games, look at the list of available games (scroll down a little) to see what games you would like to add to your pledge. Then, calculate the cost of the additional games and increase your pledge by that amount. You do not need to inform Dr. Finn during the campaign for your increased pledge. When the campaign is over, you will receive a survey in which you will inform Dr. Finn of the additional items you pledged for.
If you are outside the U.S., add-ons are not available at this time. Unfortunately, Dr. Finn is not able to offer add-ons during the campaign for backers outside the U.S. However, after the campaign is over, it's likely that a limited amount of games will be available for a late add on. Please understand that this is not due to a lack of interest in an international audience. It is due to the fact that Dr. Finn's Games is a small company that distributes its own games and it is too expensive to ship older titles to the U.K., where they are shipped out to non-U.S. backers. I have tried this in the past and it involves too much work and is very expensive for everyone concerned.
Post-Campaign Add Ons
Dr. Finn's Games does have a limited supply of older games currently in a U.K. warehouse. Before Waters of Nereus ships out to you, some of these older games will be offered at discounted prices and as "late add ons." They cannot be offered during the campaign because it is difficult to track quantities through Kickstarter. So, you will be informed after the campaign about it.
Cosmic Run: Regeneration International Level
There is a level for international backers interested in Cosmic Run: Regeneration. Since this is one of my more recent games, I will have more copies of it in the U.K. warehouse so it can be offered to international backers during this campaign.
For those in the U.S., you may add one or more of the above games to your pledge level by simply adding up the game prices and adding that amount to your total pledge. You will inform Dr. Finn's Games of your add-on choices after the campaign through a survey. The add-on prices include any additional shipping costs.
Special Note: During the campaign, Dr. Finn offered to unlock the $20K and $35K stretch goals upon funding, so the games will include these stretch goals if funded.
If you are interested in learning more about the add on games, please follow the links below and/or watch the review videos. Games designed by Dr. Finn have received glowing reviews by the board gaming community.
U.S./Canadian/U.K. Backers: The game will be shipped to you from your respective country, so no duties will be required.
E.U. backers: The game is shipped from the U.K. As of now, this means you would not pay any duties either. However, due to Brexit negotiations, it is possible this might change before the time of shipping.
All others: The games will ship from the U.K. and your package will be subject to customs fees and duties.
• Get a fun game by a highly regarded game designer. All of Dr. Finn's games receive glowing reviews from members of the board gaming community.
• Receive the Daily Goals Kickstarter-exclusive expansion. This Kickstarter exclusive expansion pack is included inside the copies of the game received by backers of this campaign.
• Help bring this game to existence. If this campaign does not fund, the game very likely will not be made.
• No post-Kickstarter bargain prices. You will not find Dr. Finn's games on sale at online retailers a week (or even months) after a Kickstarter campaign because I do not sell my games to them. I do have my own sales, but I usually wait until the game has been published for a while to do so.
• Great bundle prices. This campaign provides an opportunity to get multiple Dr. Finn's games at a great bundle price. Check out the various levels to see the great deals. For those in the U.S., you can also add games to customize your rewards during the campaign. For those outside the U.S., you will be able to add some Dr. Finn's titles after the campaign, depending on available quantities.
• Support an independent game designer. Dr. Finn's Games is not a big company and will only continue with successful crowdfunding campaigns.
Risks and challenges
Please read carefully before backing this project.
NO PLEDGE MANAGER
Dr. Finn will not be using a pledge manager for this campaign. All information will be collected through the Kickstarter surveys after the campaign and a system for payment for late add-ons will be created through Dr. Finn's Games' website.
DELIVERY AND GAME CONVENTIONS
The game is likely to be manufactured by May 2019 and delivered in June. In previous campaigns, Dr Finn understands that backers are the first people who should receive the games. However, Dr Finn may wish to show and sell the game at any major game conventions. Ideally, the game could be manufactured, shipped and delivered to all backers before any particular convention. Yet, if the timing is off, please understand that game conventions are a big expense for my small company and I may need to sell new releases as a means for paying for the convention. Up to this point, this has never been an issue and backers have always received the games first. I just want to mention it as a possibility.
Game manufacturing and publishing contains a number of risks. For this project, the greatest risks follow from the fact that the packs will be manufactured in China and shipped to the U.S. The most serious threats in this regard concern quality control over the manufacturing and delivery delays. Dr. Finn's can mitigate both of these concerns. First, I will be using a manufacturer who has produced good results on projects in the past. Second, I have successfully completed almost all of my Kickstarter campaigns right on time or even early (only 1 project was a few weeks late). If any delays do unexpectedly occur, backers will be notified promptly.
If you receive any rewards that are missing items, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and replacements will be promptly shipped. If the item arrives damaged, you'll receive replacements for whatever is damaged. Please send along a picture, as I may be able to get reimbursed from the shipper. For the past few projects (after switching manufacturers and shipping companies), we've had a very low defect rate (less than 1%).
Refunds are not given, unless there is a failure to deliver the games you've requested. However, if you are completely unsatisfied with any game, please contact me and we can discuss it.
LOW QUANTITY ALERT
Some Dr. Finn's games are getting low in stock and it is not feasible to track add-on items during the campaign. It is possible (but unlikely) that there is not enough of a particular game to fulfill all rewards. If this happens, you will be refunded all expenses related to adding that item on.
Unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, Dr. Finn's Games has a great track record of being on time. Of course, unexpected things happen and there is chance that the game will not be shipped on time. I will keep you updated if the unexpected happens.
If you provide an incorrect address or fail to update your address and a shipment is returned, it is your responsibility to pay for the re-shipment.
Please read the shipping section above.
After this campaign you may receive updates on Dr. Finn's Games' other projects. However, such updates will be infrequent.
By backing this project, you acknowledge and accept the risks and challenges just stated.
