About this project
London 1875 – The Cabinet of Gadgetry (C.O.G.) appeals for your help in acquiring the items required to construct The Great Apparatus – an automated machine for transporting her majesty's citizens safely and quickly through the increasingly crowded streets of London. Will you answer the call and perform your service dutifully?
C.O.G. incorporates a worker placement mechanic into a crossword game creating a truly unique and captivating gaming experience. In each round, you have 4 cogs (workers) to place. You use your cogs to claim letters (useful for spelling words), cabinet cards (providing various powers), dice (allowing one to move around the board and claim benefits from the space), and turn order (giving an advantage for the next round). Since players take turns placing 1 cog at a time, you are forced to make interesting decisions about which benefits to claim, as others may pick up the benefit you were thinking of getting. After acquiring letters, you use them to spell words on your tableau. However, you must plan your placement carefully so that you can try to cover many bonus spaces on your tableau, as well as complete sets of words to receive even more bonuses.
Because you are provided with a set list of "items" that the Cabinet of Gadgetry needs, you already know what words may be spelled and therefore a strong vocabulary is not required.
Although this is a word game, success does not rely on your knowledge of words, but on your ability to manipulate and organize letters on your player mat in a typical crossword fashion. This is not a typical word game!
All backers receiving a physical copy of C.O.G. will also receive a set of 10 "Dr. Widget" cards, which are used as a game variant to add a new twist to the base game. Dr. Widget, the Director of the Cabinet of Gadgetry, has certain requests, the satisfaction of which can help you score more VPs. At the start of each round, a Dr Widget card is flipped, setting possible conditions to earn more VPs for that round. For example, one of the Dr. Widget cards says "If you have 5 or more tiles at the end of the round in your reserve, score 10 VPs".
The Dr. Widget cards may be also be used as an alternative way to keep track of the rounds (as opposed to moving the clock), since you can choose the appropriate number of cards to use and just flip 1 per round. When all have been flipped, you'll know the game is almost over.
Note: These exclusive promo cards were added during the campaign. In the backer levels on the right of this page, there is no mention of the promo packs. However, be assured that everyone who backs at the $45 level or higher will receive a pack for each copy of C.O.G. they receive.
Also, these cards are a Kickstarter exclusive and will only be available during this and future Dr. Finn's Kickstarter campaigns. They will not be available in stores, except for the retailer backers of this project (who will receive only a small number of them).
The art of C.O.G. was made by OK Art Studio, by the artist Rocio Ogñenovich and Sebastian Koziner. They worked on several great looking games funded through Kickstarter (Slush Fund, Tales of Arcana, Scuba, Cul-de-Sac, Oni, etc.)
All the graphic design (cards, boards, box, etc) comes from the hand of Sebas and the beautiful box cover was illustrated by Rocio, who also did the fantastic promotional video.

Here's my video explaining the main rules of the game. A number of specifics were left out.
You can also watch Rahdo's run through to learn the rules.
Note: At the start of the game, both players should have begun with 2 randomly drawn letters (not depicted in Rahdo's video), which allows for a greater possibility of spelling a word in the first round.

Note: In the above video, Anthony and Frances were using an older version of the rules. Since that time, a few important rule changes were made, though these changes do not considerably alter the game.

Dr. Finn's promotional items are only available during Kickstarter campaigns. For those fans of Dr. Finn's previous games, here's a chance for you to pick up a special promotional item.
Note: The Butterfly Garden and Slush Fund 2 promotional packs were included in the rewards for those projects, so they are not new. The packs for Capo die Capi, Cosmic Run, and Institute for Magical Arts were not part of the original campaigns.
All games will be shipped together with C.O.G. in July (or when it arrives). Promotional items, however, might be shipped separately.
NOTE: If you acquire Herbaceous though this campaign, you will also receive the Kickstarter-only Flavor Pack (which was offered during the original campaign with Pencil First Games). Other promo packs or expansion packs, however, must be added. See "add-on" below.
Note: For the "C.O.G. + 2 Games" levels, you will inform Dr. Finn's of your choice through a survey sent out after the campaign ends.
You may add games to any level at or above the $45 level by adding the appropriate amount to your pledge. Dr. Finn's will find out why you added funds after the campaign is over, by use of a survey. For those outside the U.S., you must also add the shipping costs based on how many additional games are added to your level. Games will be shipped together with C.O.G. in July.
You may also add the following promotional items to any level at or above the $45 level by adding the appropriate amount. For those outside the U.S., the price for shipping is included in the prices below. These will likely be shipped separately (and early in Nov/Dec) for no additional charge.
Shipping to the United States: Shipping costs are incorporated into all rewards for U.S. backers. Games will be shipped by UPS or USPS. Promo packs will be sent via first class mail.
Shipping to European Union: All games going to non-U.S. destinations will ship from the U.K., which means E.U. backers will not be subject to additional taxes or duties. You will receive a notice when games ship from Games Quest. No tracking information is provided. Promo packs will likely ship from the U.S. and so may be subject to duties.
Shipping to all other destinations (including Canada): Games will ship from the U.K. All items may be subject to duties and taxes imposed by your country's customs office. You will receive a notice when games ship from Games Quest. No tracking information is provided. Promo packs, however, will be shipped from the U.S. and may also be subject to duties.
Costs: The listed shipping costs for those outside the U.S. are lower than the actual shipping costs because Dr. Finn's Games has reduced your shipping costs by incorporating some of those costs into the prices of the games.
Dr. Finn's Games publishes the games of Steve Finn, an independent game designer. Dr. Finn's Games relies almost exclusively on funds raised during Kickstarter campaigns and direct sales to individuals. Thus, your support in this campaign is greatly appreciated. Reviews of Dr. Finn’s Games have been overwhelmingly positive. In a recent review, Richard Ham (”Rahdo Runs Through”) dubbed Dr. Finn the “King of the Filler.” In addition to C.O.G., other games from Dr. Finn's are available to backers of this project. Many of these games are low in stock, with reprints very unlikely for a long time, if at all. So, if you're interested in other Dr. Finn's Games, now is a great time to pick them up.

Risks and challenges
PRIOR KICKSTARTER PROJECTS
All prior Kickstarter campaigns for Dr. Finn's Games have been completed. If you have had a problem receiving any of the games from the Slush Fund 2 and/or Butterfly Garden campaign, please contact me.
Please read carefully before backing this project.
Game manufacturing and publishing contains a number of risks. For this project, the greatest risks follow from the fact that the games will be manufactured in China and shipped to the U.S. The most serious threat in this regard concerns quality control over the manufacturing. A more likely threat, though less serious, is the possible delays involved. Dr. Finn's can mitigate both of these concerns. First, I will be using a manufacturer who has produced good results on game projects in the past. Second, I have successfully completed almost all of my Kickstarter campaigns right on time or even early (only 1 project was a few weeks late). If any delays do unexpectedly occur, backers will be notified promptly.
If you receive any games that are missing items, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and replacements will be promptly shipped. If the game arrives damaged, you'll receive replacements for whatever is damaged. Please send along a picture, as I may be able to get reimbursed from the shipper. For the past few projects (after switching manufacturers and shipping companies), we've had a very low defect rate (less than 1%).
Refunds are not usually given, unless there is a failure to deliver the games you've requested. However, if you are completely unsatisfied with any game, please contact me and we can discuss it.
Unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, Dr. Finn's Games has a great track record of being on time. C.O.G. is scheduled to be delivered by July 2017. Unless otherwise noted, all other items will ship with C.O.G. at the same time. I may offer early shipping on games that are already manufactured, but this would require an additional payment from the backer. More details will be provided after the campaign.
If you provide an incorrect address or fail to update your address and a game is returned, it would be nice of you to pay for the re-shipment. However, I have paid for it in the past, though I think it really should be your responsibility.
Please read the shipping section above.
Through this campaign you may receive updates on Dr. Finn's Games' other projects. However, such updates will be infrequent.
By backing this project, you acknowledge and accept the risks and challenges just stated.
