About this project
We could start by telling You the long story about how, what and why, but we believe that pictures and videos are much better. Moreover, we believe that making things happen is more important than idealizing Your word documents - at least that is how we made Chop-E.
What is Chop-E
Chop-E is an awesome electric two-wheeler with a unique design and the coolest ever feeling from riding it. It is a very fine combination of custom parts and designs combined with off-the-shelf products. Now, to begin, we suggest that You check out the video, because it will give You a slight hint of the emotions You get while riding the Chop-E.
* We sincerely want to thank our friends from AirDog for the aerial footage. (they were on Kickstarter just recently: AirDog project page) Part filmed from above during 1.01-1.08 in the video was filmed with a real AirDog prototype, guys You are amazing!
NB! all the Chop-E's in videos and pictures are prototypes! This means that the final product will look almost the same, just with minor tweaks and improvements. Throughout the development process we will keep You informed about the updates.
A bit of technical info
Battery: 20Ah, 16x LiFePo4 elements, 48volts
Front wheel/tire: 20" diameter and 3" wide tire
Rear wheel/tire: 18" alloy rim with 240/40/18 motorcycle tire
Max speed: 20mph/35km/h (adjustable)
Range: 35+ miles / 55+ kilometers
Weight: ca 140 lbs / 65kg
Length: 6.6 ft / 2 meters
Why should You ride Chop-E
- You will literally be riding amost for free
with our expensive electricity pricing Chop-E can ride 625km for the cost of 1€ :D and that is basically FREE ;)
if we do the US calculation, Chop-E gets 329miles for 1$. (exchange rate of 0,85$ to 1€)
- Chop-E is a real product, not a cheap rip-off, made of ugly plastic that You should feel scared to sit on
it is built with high quality and precision
it feels and looks like high-end product - because it is one.
About calendars, as they are special artworks and they will celebrate the birth of the IDEA we will ship all calendars at once. Meaning, if You order a Chop-E with a calendar, You will get 2 shipments - first the calendar, later the Chop-E.
What will You receive?
Anything You pledge for + the obvious things like:
- Charger: all shipped Chop-E's will have a charger supplied, Your electricity configuration will be asked when the project gets funded.
- Instructions: we are working on a manual, but we strongly believe that the best solution will be a video that will be avaialble 24/7 online.
Explanations of the main components we do not manufacture ourselves:
Engine: MagicPie 3.2 on prototypes, production models will come with 4th generation engines that are quieter and more efficient. Engines are Golgen Motors products. The engine has 1Kw of power and is programmable to meet Your local requirements of speed.
Battery: The capacity is 20Ah and every battery pack has BMS (Battery Management System) in it. Currently we can build very simple batteries that have key-lock for power cutting. With help of Kickstarter we want to finalize a neat battery design where one lock would be used for locking the battery in place and switching the power.
Rear wheel/tire: both these components are regular off-the-shelf products. Rim is replica of the VW Scirocco style, it is much lighter than the original one, and cheaper :) In terms of tire we chose Pirelli DIABLO which fits perfectly on that rim.
Seat: we are planning to have a self-designed seat, but for now this is not the "game-changer"
As most of the awesome projects on Kickstarter, we can achieve reasonable prices from manufacturers if we order higher quantities, mostly 100 pcs of all components, for many components even 500 pcs. We have calculated that when we reach our little goal we will pretty much brake even and cover all our expenses and have very good and solid relations for further growth.
This is why it is really important that You, our dearest supporters and true believers, share the project info as much as possible! We would gladly pay You for that :D and actually we will. The faster and higher we reach the funding, the more awesome stretch goals we'll unlock. For example see the first stretch goal!
Timeline is easy, get-things-DONE.
well, here we admit that we have not yet completed the graphical timeline, we will post it with our first update!
Please, do not just take our words, check the articles we have found online:
"This battery-powered, fat-tired, low-slung ride is an odd breed that exemplifies the modern, global entrepreneurial spirit." by Stephen Shankland @ cnet.com
"The crowd swelled on the Damrak in front of Amsterdam’s old stock exchange when the three low-riding choppers pulled up. Nobody complained about the noise from the bikes, because there was none." by Zack Newmark @ nltimes.nl
First stretch goal is simple: if we reach our 100 000$ goal in first 2 weeks, we will have time and enough courage to board a plane and make a 10-14 days road-trip across USA, this way many of You will be able to see our real prototypes, test them and share us Your thoughts, emotions and ideas.
Because of the nature of the ideas we want to implement, we will not be revealing the rest of our stretch goals at this moment. Let's take it step-by-step. In some cases we might need legal protection, exactly the same way we have legally protected Chop-E with a patent.
We promise that the these unlockable goals are awesome and all You have to do is post, tweet, scream, draw and sing about Chop-E on every corner ;)
Our humble story in short:
Chop-E, Chop-E... , Chop-E is... well we really don't know where to start. Two friends, Di and Al, had a discussion about an electric bike for Di. He had called Al on the 1. of April and wanted to get some help. Though Al tried to deflect with a claim that he knows nothing about el. bikes, Di decided to go to his place anyway and analyze 6-10 different available products. All was good until all selected products were declared to be flawed and there was nothing to discuss anymore. Al & Di turned out to be VERY picky - 10 minutes of silence, pretty dumb staring at each other and the ceiling were interrupted with life-changing words: "Lets build two bikes on our own". Even though Al didn't need an electrical bicycle, he was really eager to build one and help his friend.
All this was followed up with tremendous time spent on design and placement of the main components - whole 7 minutes.
The IDEA was born, evening of April the 1st - international joke/comedy/fools day...
For the next 3 weeks we spent on shopping for the parts and fine-tuning the idea. On the 21st of April Al landed in the garage with lots of enthusiasm and ... well with a LOT of enthusiasm.
To his luck the garage was like a half-home to himanyhow. He had helped to start the business 8 years prior. He was no stranger to what was going on and he always loved to help and get his hands dirty: building 4x4 off roaders, 1964 Valiant Plymouth, 1977 ElCamino and any other projects that were told to be impossible or no-one else wanted to do.
Eight days in short, well, mostly during these eight days Al was getting strange questions, criticism and total projection of failure ;)
On April 28th, Al sat on the first ever Chop-E, pushed the accelerator and... buzzzzed off... well that Chop-E is still riding and accounts for 1600+ kilometers(1000+ miles)
On 30th of April there was official bikers season opening. Di arrived 1 minute earlier on his car, though both, Di and Al, started at the same time during traffic jams. Di was the one to register first WTF effects on the real Harley and all other leather coated guys faces - they were SO confused and did not get their bearings right.
well and from that day the snow-ball effect started. In about a month Eugene joined us with his grate passion for lightweight bikes, especially electrical ones.
And for sure we had our first police engagement as well. No, please, Al was not speeding :) they just wanted to know what it was. At that exact moment a friend of ours caught it on camera while filming parade of motorcycle season opening:
... and further on the story is just more and more crazy crazy crazy....
and one more thing we can promise You: with Chop-E You will have such a freedom, that You will start exploring places You have never been before. That is exactly what happened with all of us and our friend who have taken the Chop-E's for day or two just to ride and explore, and that is beautiful:
But as for now we have made our move, now it is YOUR turn, we can only hold our pe...breath and count on Your help and support!
Risks and challenges
Main challenge is that everyone would get their Chop-E as soon as possible and that is not a technical challenge, this is our wish to share the emotions and joy Chop-E brings.
About real challenges:
As our main components are really expensive, even in bulk quantities, we can only order them with full prepayments, which slows us down. To overcome that we have a very specific plan on how and on what level we can engage with the suppliers and producers. This way we will stay on schedule.
The law, especially in US where every state has different regulations. Fortunately in most states electrical transportation is limited with speed restrictions. E.g. back in Estonia we have regulation that driving speed up to 25km/h is maximum for being able to ride without motorcycle category licenses.
We can offer speed limitations electronically, meaning that depending on Your requirement we will limit the maximum speed of Your Chop-E.
Many functions of engine are programmable. More info on GolgenMotor homepage: www.goldenmotor.com
