About this project

Any of us who reside in a house have an outdoor hosebib or two (known to some as a spigot or faucet).

The other night (admittedly over a couple of beers) we started talking about those silly, cheap styrofoam hosebib covers we have to buy every winter to protect our hosebibs from freezing. We were complaining about how unsustainable they were, and then came to the sudden realization that they do, in fact, look a lot like a certain part of the female anatomy... And the HOSEBOOB was born... This led to a very lengthy and entertaining conversation about how we could turn a boring, unsustainable hosebib cover into something that could do less harm to our earth and give folks a good laugh. There could be the Pasty, The Polka-Dot Bikini, the Push-Up.... And a dollar from each HOSEBOOB sold will go toward breast cancer research!

So we started to do some research, and sure enough, there are no decorative hosebib covers out there.

Our first step is to create prototypes. Using 3d printing technology and sustainable plastic filament. We want to replace nasty styrofoam with recycled/recyclable material! Thus far we have modeled the basic shape and size of the HOSEBOOB itself based on researching various existing standard hosebib covers, and are working with 3D printing firms in Seattle on the process of printing the first prototype out of filament made of ABS vs filament made of recycled plastic bottles, to test their durability. We are also looking at 2 types of insulation (cellulose vs recycled jean) to either apply to the interior of the HOSEBOOB shell, or inject into a HOSEBOOB modeled with an internal cavity. We want to test both to see what provides the best insulation value.

The "Pasty"

After the prototypes are vetted, we can explore scaling production by large scale 3d printing, or turning to injection molding as a viable manufacturing technique. The goal is to provide HOSEBOOBs at a price point that is reasonable vs. the $5-$15 cost of a standard hosebib cover.

We need funding to formally engage talented, local companies to help us prototype and perfect. We want HOSEBOOBs on every hosebib in America! No more ugly, uninteresting unsustainable hosebib covers! Let's change the world, one hosebib at a time.

Oh, and we already have a concept for a more PG rated line related to supporting animal conservation, and an overarching company brand. So let's get the HOSEBOOB funded so we can expand our offerings!

Risks and challenges

Challenges will be in perfecting the designs and truly vetting the prototypes to ensure they function as well as a standard boring hosebib cover. Then finding the most sustainable and cost effective way to mass produce them. Having the funds to fully vet options for sustainable filament and insulation, and test manufacturing options for scaling is key to success.
