About this project
Trunk is a new breed of travel magazine that launched in November 2010. We are currently pursuing the capital required to sustain Trunk indefinitely. But in the meantime, the clock is ticking to publish our next issue, Fall 2011. We need your help to do so and maintain the momentum from the debut issue’s success. Please take the time to learn more about Trunk by watching our video and reading below. We thank you very much for your time and support.
Trunk is an uncompromising magazine dedicated to showcasing the most fascinating stories from around the globe, with a breathtaking aesthetic and genuine writing. It is for an audience that is worldly and savvy enough to embrace travel as a way of life, and for anyone else who is simply curious about the things around them.
We are the former photo and creative directors from Travel + Leisure and the former executive editor from Surface magazine, who was also a founding editorial member of McSweeney’s literary journal.
We conceived of Trunk while living overseas, both working and traveling as freelance writers, photographers, and designers for marquis magazines. As such, part of Trunk’s mission is to share with its readers the unique access to a culture or a place that one experiences when traveling as a journalist.
We self-funded and self-published the debut issue, doing everything from writing/shooting feature articles ourselves on a two-month trip through southern Africa, to selling ads, to loading Uhaul vans with boxes of the magazine and delivering it to stores.
ADVERTISING: The following brands advertised in Trunk's Fall 2010 issue: Missoni, Swatch, Temperley of London, Emirates AIrlines, Kartell, Marquis Jet, and more.
CIRCULATION: 12,000 copies of the debut issue were distributed through marketing partnerships at Swatch stores, Flight 001, Thompson Hotels, Kartell, and many other venues, also reaching the international markets of London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Copenhagen, and Berlin.
The Fall 2010 issue is also now available in over 120 Barnes & Noble stores across the US. We have since signed on with Source Interlink, one of the largest distributors in the country. Find the store nearest you that carries Trunk at www.trunkmag.com/distribution
ACCOLADES: Trunk is the proud recipient of a Merit Award, from the Society of Publication Designers, in the category of “Photography in a Travel Feature” at this year’s Publication Design Awards: http://www.spd.org/2011/02/pub-46-merit-winners-announced.php#more
The money we raise on Kickstarter will supplement our own personal contribution to help cover the following costs:
paper / printing / distribution / mail fulfillment / writer travel expenses / photographer travel expenses / support staff / photo crews / photo equipment & processing costs / every other possible expense required to publish a magazine
***All donation amounts already include US domestic shipping costs. Additional international shipping costs apply where indicated.
