“Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts” Albert Einstein once remarked. As was often this case with him, he was onto something.
Today we are totally deluged with information about the world we live in and the times in which we move. But despite the pluralisation delivered by social media, the vast majority of that information still actually comes from the same places, passing through the same filters of un-lived experience and vested interest, and still does very little to enrich our lives, expand our experience or meaningfully inform us.
Fear prevails as the news current; but questioning of big, systemic issues remains too elusive. The pantomime of opinion battles carried out in the various territories & timelines of social media often fog a finer comprehension of the extraordinary realities & complexities of life within and without. A majority of people are routinely depicted as a psychology-less shoal to be condemned or saved, subject to the partisan bias of a given voice.
The collective of writers, artists, academics and other alert people who have come together to make NERVE happen are pretty certain there is another way of doing information, and a more nourishing, enjoyable & entertaining way of looking at modern life, current affairs and learning new stuff in an active, authentic and informed way: that information can be voluminous and textured.
We feel as though the status quo creates a cyclical, reductive & limiting illusion about the present and the future and we’d like to try and create a space where that illusion is thinnest.
There are cracks in the mainstream corporate media and in projects like “The Correspondent” in Holland to the Bristol Cable here in the UK we see a joined up insistence for independent, autonomous high quality writing, film and audio. It’s our conviction – based on a load of broad evidence – that a big appetite exists for exactly this type of pluralised, creative, investigative and original information. As does a desire for involvement.
That's why we'll be the first platform to house a dedicated open channel for one off podcasts ("Hinterland" strand) that we'll commission & help produce.
Now, we want to invite you to join with us as partners in this experiment to see where we can take it. Initially via two regular pod-cast formats & a short film channel (please have a look at the NERVE Manifesto) we hope to build out and develop a wider platform that many more people can contribute to and that can take many more forms …. forms that we have not yet even imagined.
Risks and challenges
Given the breadth of skills and experience being collectively brought to the NERVE project, we do not not anticipate any insurmountable problems or issues.
The depth of expertise in the fields we are focusing on and the active networks connected to the collective means that all eventualities can be covered quickly under one project contingency.
A large proportion of the NERVE project personnel contributed to a former, successful Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1307460848/audience-unlock-the-uk-gold ) so a number of us have also been through this specific process before, and achieved all goals.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
