About

It all started with a weird-ass pic and a throwaway tweet:

The tweet in all its glory.
The tweet in all its glory.

So that's what we're doing. We're asking writers - established, new, young, old, white, black, human, lizard, and breadbox - to respond to one weird-ass pic (the main project image, not the one in the tweet, just to be awkward) with stories in whatever genre they want. We're collecting the best of them into a full-length anthology, and delivering that straight to you, reader and lover of weird and fantastic stories.

Who are we?

The authors: we don't know yet! That's the exciting part. We can't wait to see the strange and wonderful stories people submit from all over the world.

The editors: Lyle Skains & DeAnn Bell. We're both published authors with PhDs in Creative Writing (for whatever that's worth).

Lyle is a Senior Lecturer in Writing at Bangor University, researching Creative Writing, Digital Fiction, and Digital Publishing. She's published short fiction and digital fiction (some of which you can even find on Amazon). She teaches workshops on indie and digital publishing, and was the Editor-in-Chief for the Blue Pencils and Media Medley anthologies.

DeAnn teaches Creative Writing at Bangor University as well as workshops for area writing groups. Her writing has appeared in Sage Woman, Open Pen, and NAWE's Writing in Education. She specializes in Southern (USA) women's writing, speculative and Gothic fiction, multiculturalism, and writer identity and body.

What is the funding for?

First and foremost, it's for the authors of these stories. As authors ourselves, we know how much writers get exploited. So much of what we write is "on spec" - writing in fits and starts around full-time jobs and families and responsibilities for just the hope that some editor somewhere might pay us a measly fee for the hours spent creating.

Our previous projects were on shoestring budgets (or none at all!), but we want to pay our authors at least semi-professional rates. That's a minimum of a penny a word (which works out to about £50 per short story). Our project goal allows us to pay our authors this minimum, plus a contributor copy.

If we exceed our funding goal, our stretch goals include higher rates for our authors.

Bully for them, but what about the backers?

The cool thing is, the more we can pay authors, the better stories we'll get. Authors are more likely to put some serious effort into writing that has a good chance of paying off, and more authors will submit their stories to us with professional rates.

So by supporting #NormalDeviation, you're not only getting some great stories and helping some authors earn a paycheck, you're ensuring you get even better stories. Win-win, right?

Plus, we'll keep you updated on the process - things we're thinking about, what we're looking for, story themes we're seeing - all the behind-the-scenes publishing insights you can stand. We've already started a blog, and we'll give you backers some choice and backer-only tidbits as we go.

Take note - Strange Supporters and above get double the stories! A copy of Blue Pencils will be included in your rewards package.

Even better, some backers will get conehead crafts from Lyle's craft workshop! We present this Loki amigurumi (tiny doll) as evidence of craft mastery:

I do what I want!
I do what I want!

What's the timeframe?

Our call for submissions is currently live, and it closes in August 2017. We're going to select the best stories for the anthology, spend some time with the authors to make sure they're perfectly crafted and polished, and then do all the publisher-y things (editing, copyediting, proofreading, layout and design, etc.). We anticipate having the complete anthology ready for delivery in May 2018.

Stretch Goals

We're still developing our stretch goals, but here's what we'd like to offer if we raise above and beyond:

  • Hardcover versions of the print books
  • One-off stories from anthology authors
  • More quirky little conehead crafts
  • Fully catered book launch
  • Have suggestions? Feel free to offer them!

Risks and challenges

Risks: There's a possibility that the bajillion writers in the world will find our weird-ass pic uninspiring, and so won't send any stories to us. Both Lyle and DeAnn, however, are committed to contributing stories, as are at least 3 of our writer contacts. We have also already received submissions, and it's still very early days! So we don't think it's terribly likely that we won't get enough stories to publish. And if we're able to pay our authors a professional rate, the likelihood of that diminishes to nada.

Challenges: Just the challenge of inspiring great writing! The more people you share this project with, the smaller this challenge is, so please help us and share far and wide.
