For the last 13 years, the Kansas City Gay & Lesbian Film Festival has brought great stories from around the world to movie audiences in Kansas City. By backing our Kickstarter project, you’ll help us tell one of our own stories and share it with the world.
Out Here Now – The Kansas City LGBT Film Project is a new venture that will produce and distribute films about the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people here in the heart of America. We'll be filming our stories—our struggles for equality, the personal stories that shape us, and our shared culture that define the LGBT experience of the Kansas City community. From archival footage to the stories of both prominent and unassuming Kansas Citians, our first film will show the world a part of the LGBT community whose story hasn’t yet been told.
Making it happen
In some ways, we’re very fortunate. There’s no shortage of vibrant people, fascinating stories, and well-documented history in our local area—including the resources of GLAMA, the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America. We’ve got the community connections, skills, and passion to see this project through. What we need next is a creative videographer with a knack for great storytelling and the funds to pay them for their efforts.
As an established film festival that has worked with filmmakers from all over the world, we’ve got a shortlist of directors who know Kansas City and its LGBT community and would love a chance to help us. Our goal with this Kickstarter is to raise the funds to select the filmmaker for our first film, slated to debut next June in the 2013 Festival.
Our goal is to raise $5500 through this Kickstarter, which will go directly toward hiring a videographer—a director/editor who will be our creative lens for the film. While the total cost of this project will be a good bit more than $5500, funding the videographer position is the most important next step to move our project forward. If we exceed our goal, any additional funds will go towards the film's production expenses.
Here’s where you come in
It’s a great story that you can be proud to be a part of, but we need your help to make it happen. We’ve created some great Kickstarter rewards related to this project. You could choose to see your name on screen when the credits role, own a copy of the finished DVD, or even attend the premiere of our film at the 2013 Festival in Kansas City next June.
More about us
Now celebrating its 13th year, the Kansas City Gay & Lesbian Film Festival presents an annual, weeklong festival of new and emerging independent LGBT film at the historic Tivoli Cinemas in Kansas City, Missouri. As one of the most visible and highly regarded cultural programs in the local LGBT community, the Festival is widely acknowledged for its ability to entertain as well as educate. We’re proud to be the city's oldest and best-attended community film program and maintain strong partnerships with other local LGBT service organizations.
Every year, Festival Director Jamie Rich and a team of dedicated volunteers put together a great festival that brings high quality, independent films from around the world to our audiences in KC. This year’s festival features nearly two dozen films, including: 15 feature-length films, a trio of locally produced shorts, and six features that got their start on Kickstarter.
