About

Our Team and Our Mission

With over 22 years of practice, Wes Crenshaw, PhD has logged more than 24,000 hours working face-to-face with teenagers and their families. He's a contributor to Your Teen and ADDitude magazines, a newspaper columnist, and author of several books, most recently I Always Want to Be Where I'm Not. He's also a radio and TV commentator on topics related to teen and family psychology.

Katie Guyot is a nineteen-year-old sophomore majoring in English and Economics at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio where she also serves as a community (resident hall) advisor, offering guidance and support to freshman. She coauthored the Double Take advice column with Dr. Wes and is an ongoing contributor to radio and TV on topics related to teens and parenting.

Every day teens talk with Dr. Wes about things they don’t discuss with anyone else—not their parents and, quite often, not even their friends. Most of those discussions involve how they think, feel, and behave in relationships, love, and their emerging sexuality. Since those conversations are private, we commissioned teen dating couple David Siegel (@siegel.out) and Nicole Romero (@tropicalnicole) to interview other teens about their views of sex and sex education. They produced this short film for our project:

As these teens illustrate in their candid and unscripted moments, many parents still struggle with even basic concerns about teen sexuality, often relying on outdated information and advice. In fact, if you’re not talking to a teen about sexuality today, you’re not talking to today’s teens about sexuality. And if you’re relying on books written just two or three years ago or reading newer books by authors who aren’t themselves teens or in a daily conversation with teens, you’ll may be left behind on the sexual information superhighway.

The Book

Dr. Wes and Katie Guyot want to catch parents up with a new perspective. They've teamed up to write Consent-Based Sex Education: Parenting Teens in an Internet Age. It builds on Dr. Wes's years of training and experience as a psychologist and Katie's experience as a teen to provide a cutting-edge guide to real-world adolescent sexuality.

Consent-Based Sex Education offers parents a quantum leap forward. It provides not only insight into current teen sexual culture, but scripted vignettes of parent-teen conversations that go beyond the basics to respond directly and clearly to the many issues your teens are likely to face from ages thirteen to twenty.

It offers parents, a strong, intelligent, and rational message to compete with the 24/7 flow of information teens are getting from school, friends, and the Internet. We'll guide parents on how to have the courageous conversations teens need to make authentic, informed sexual choices in the context of ethical reasoning. To understand consent. And to respect the consent of others.

Why Parents Need This Fresh Approach to Sex Education

Wonder whether your teen is at risk of becoming sexually active? All reputable research indicates that 95% of adults living today had premarital sex. Nearly half of all teens will have had vaginal sex by age 17. By age 19 that number goes up to 75%. So it’s not really a question of whether a teen or very young adult will become sexually active, it’s a question of when and how well-informed he or she will be in making that choice.

Most experts advocate comprehensive sex education be taught in public schools, but current political trends make that unlikely. Besides, while comprehensive sex education may offer kids the facts and figures of sex it can’t provide the most important ingredients teens need to enjoy a life of healthy sexuality: values. Those can only come from parents.

Toward that end, Consent-Based Sex Education helps parents understand:

  • What's new in teen sexual culture TODAY, not last year.
  • Why abstinence-only messages don't connect with most teens or engage them in the critical discussions that help them make authentic, informed choices.
  • How consent should form the core of all sexual conversations.
  • Why consent is much more than "no means no," and even more than "yes means yes."
  • How the wide acceptance of gay, lesbian, and transgender identities is changing how teens view themselves as sexual people.
  • How free explicit online content is quickly becoming America's number one sex educator and how parents can respond with a competitive, healthy message.
  • How tight parental control of teen sexuality inadvertently teaches kids problematic messages about consent and reduces teens' ability to make rational choices when it really counts.

Consent-Based Sex Education takes parents beyond dry theory and information to offer practice steps using Dr. Wes and Katie's PLUS Model of responding to teen sexuality—Pause, Listen, Understand, and be Sex-Positive.

Using real fictionalized case examples, the book prepares parents for a whole series of difficult problems they may face with their teens including:

  • Knowing when you're ready for sexual activity
  • Contraception and STI risk management
  • Understanding consent: your own and your partners, and respecting both "yes" and "no" as an authentic choice
  • Defining and responding to healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • The use of explicit online content and interactive online sex
  • Sharing sexual images or comments on texting or social media
  • Coming out as gay, lesbian, or bisexual
  • Casual sex, hooking up, dating, and exclusivity
  • Gender identity
  • Teen pregnancy
  • Relational violence

Katie and Wes take each of these scenarios and show how to apply the PLUS model to help parents listen and understand teens so teens will listen to and understand their parents.

Completing and publishing Consent-Based Sex Education will cost at least $15,000. That includes a summer writing and research sabbatical for Dr. Wes to give him time away from his busy practice while allowing him to keep getting the message out about Consent Based Sex Education on radio and TV. It also includes funding for two summer internships, one for Katie as coauthor and another for the teen editor and production manager.

S-T-R-E-T-C-H. If the project exceeds its goal of $15,000 and reaches $20,000, we'll use the additional funding to shoot a series of videos illustrating the scripted vignettes in this book so parents can buy them on DVD or stream them through Amazon, making it easier to pick up the subtle nuances we use to talk to teens about sexuality. If we reach our stretch goal of $20,000, every contribution over $26 will receive a copy (additional shipping charges may apply for DVDs).

SUPER S-T-R-E-T-C-H. If we reach $25,000, we'll commission David and Nicole to go back into the field and collect enough footage of interviews with teens, young adults, and parents for a feature-length documentary on on teen sexuality from the perspective of the people it affects most, teens. If we reach this stretch goal, every pledge over $81 will receive a stream or DVD for free (additional shipping charges may apply).

Premiums

We have some great premiums to inspire you to join our team, including copies of the eBook, paperback, hardcover, or audiobook, "It's All About Consent" tee-shirts featuring David and Nicole's "Sunset Kiss", a webinar for parents, and personal educational consultation with Dr. Wes. Every premium allows you to contribute your ideas to the project. Some even allow you to contribute essays and artwork with personal or professional citation.

If you agree that the next generation deserves a more rational and realistic approach to the important issue of teen sexuality--one that helps them attain a positive experience of sexuality across the life-span--please donate to our Kickstarter campaign and send this link on to parents with kids of any age, as well as anyone you know who cares about teens.

Together we can begin to change how society talks about sex education. More importantly, we can change how parents talk with teens about sex, one conversation at a time.

Risks and challenges

Even though a lot of our material is already written, you are investing in a project that isn't finished yet, so there is a risk that we could each fall off separate cliffs and the project would not be completed. Short of that, we have a structured series of writing deadlines and the project should be ready by the end of August, at which time advance copies will be released for editing and review.

Unlike some book proposals, we are NOT asking for money to hire a proofreader or editor, pay for submission to agents or publishing houses, or underwrite the cost of production. We've got all that covered. We're just asking for time, and, as we all know, time is expensive.

We know how to publish quality paperbacks, eBooks, hardcovers, and audiobooks successfully through our imprint Family Psychological Press. We've done it before, and we'll do it again with Consent-Based Sex Education. Dr. Wes's current book "I Always Want to Be Where I'm Not: Successful Living with ADD & ADHD" (2014) was published under this model. Three of the four versions are consistently in the top-30 on Amazon's books about ADHD and at the time of this launch, the audiobook was #1 on Audible.com's books about ADHD and the top-ranked audiobook about ADHD on Amazon.com

We also believe in producing a quality product. Dr. Wes is a prolific writer and Katie is an grammar and phrasology freak, so every word of every line will be top-shelf when we go to press. We have summer 2015 set aside for just this purpose including several retreats in a writers' colony to get the job done and time to shoot the parent-teen video vignettes if we reach our stretch goal.

So, what you're pledging to support isn't our dream. It's a solid and much-needed product that just needs your support to move straight from our publishing system to your mailbox and hopefully, a lot of other mailboxes as well. We'll keep you updated right here throughout the project to let you know what we're working on!
