- Do you hate yoga?
- Do you hate the commercialization of yoga?
- Do you hate how it 'flexes' your politics until they go limp?
- Do you hate yourself for doing it anyway?
Capitalism has ruined everything.
Let's ruin it, together.
Feminist Economics Yoga is my long term project where I combine feminist economics and Kundalini yoga to support people as they heal their social and economic wounds and become strong enough to imagine a future that isn't so hard to survive in.
The aim is to combine political ideas with physical practice and to use an ancient social technology (yoga) to uproot the internalized values associated with capitalism that have infiltrated us more deeply than simply our wallets.
This project began as a set of workshops and performances. Thanks to its overwhelming popularity it has evolved into a series of three yoga tutorial videos. I am seeking your support because I want to make a second series of yoga videos, this time at a professional quality level, so they can reach more people who are suffering at home, alone, having been made to feel like economic failures.
I'M NOT A HEALER, I'M JUST ANGRY
The way the capitalist economy works makes it very hard for most of us to get the basics we need to stay alive, including housing and healthcare. We are encouraged to become competitive money making bots, and we are denied the time to attend to the things that really matter, like caring for community members, mending the environment or enjoying being alive on this planet. This contradiction makes some of us anxious and/or depressed, and/or leads to addiction and untransformative social unrest.
How do we get out of the cycle that reproduces this situation and these individual and collective sicknesses?
We need new ways to care for ourselves and one another so we can work together to build communities that prioritize everyone's health and life and abolish a system of competition, profit and selfies.
We need practices and spaces that generate individual and collective health and radical new ideas about society. This is why I am developing Feminist Economics Yoga, and why I need your help to share it with as many people as possible.
THE FIRST THREE VIDEO TUTORIALS ARE READY!
Each of the three videos in the first series of Feminist Economics Yoga (available for a donation to this fundraiser) is under 60 minutes and pairs Kundalini yoga exercises with storytelling and visualizations.
In the first tutorial we learn to unplug our nervous systems from the global economy, to protect ourselves from social media corporations and digital technology like smartphones, and to establishing new connections with people and other things in the world. In the second, we learn about the threat of passive authoritarianism (way capitalism has implanted in each of us a desire to be ruled) and how to rebel from the inside out. In the final tutorial in the first series we break down the wall of distrust that debt of everything has built inside of (and between) us, and which it has made us pay for!
I created this series using my own funding and with help from my friends (Finishing editor: Zen Cohen Studios; Camera: Max Haiven)
NOW I NEED YOUR HELP
With your support, this autumn I will produce four new Feminist Economics Yoga video tutorials, bringing the overthrow of the rancid economic system closer within reach.
I need your generous financial contributions to help me produce high quality professional yoga tutorial videos and ensure they get widespread distribution.
I also need your help spreading the videos that I have already made to people who will benefit from them.
All the videos will be available for low-price online rental and a sliding-scale to ensure they are accessible to all.
This new series will be professionally produced in San Francisco at Zen Cohen Studios and will be based on interviews and advice from activists and thinkers working on the related themes. I will commission a musician to produce a score. I'll hire artist Natalia Sookias to make a new website and design for the project. And I will employ marketing consultant Nicole Markoff to reach new audiences that didn't know they wanted to learn feminist economics through yoga.
Before we know it, yogis who didn't know to dream of uprooting capitalism or participating in collective disobedience will be meeting on street corners wearing balaclavas. They'll be calm, centred and righteously furious as they organize a new form of healing to confront the systems that made us rely on neoliberal white yoga in the first place.
The next series of videos will include subjects such as:
- Dump the Invisible Boss off Your Back
- Collective Unpayable Debts
- Zapatista Logic and the End of Individualism
- Patriarchy Detox
- What is Cultural Appropriation?
Together, we will heal our social and economic wounds and move forward collectively.
Risks and challenges
The only risk here is that the cynics, skeptics and the people who are too scared to search the internet won't find this. Please share it with people who will find it useful.
If you try the yoga and have concerns or ideas, I would love to talk with you about that. This is new, and I am learning.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
