Sonic the Comic (or STC as it is known to many) was the official, British-born SEGA comic that saw life on the shelves of newsagents between the early nineties and the early noughties. The comic chronicled a unique universe based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and several other SEGA franchises including Streets of Rage and Revenge of the Shinobi to name but a few.
Fronted by the comic’s mascot Megadroid (depicted in various iterations as being built of parts of SEGA consoles), it saw publication on a fortnightly basis and contained a variety of other content such as reader artwork and letters, as well as reports on other contemporary events and video games.
Although the comic was discontinued in 2002, the artwork and stories had a resonating effect on many readers, who have continued the comic in an online incarnation as Sonic the Comic - Online. The comic still continues to garner interest to present day, with many stories featured in the comic being cited by fans as some of the best written across all of the many universes of Sonic the Hedgehog!
STC25 is a day-long celebration of the UK’s Sonic the Comic and its online continuation: Sonic the Comic Online. We think Sonic the Comic deserves its own special day to commemorate 25 years of amazing adventures!
We want to do this by hosting a special event that will showcase the many aspects of what made this comic so memorable, and what has kept it going as a fan creation to date.
Back in 2014, we held STCC (Sonic the Comic-Con) which was more of a convention style event with specific events and Q&As etc. STC25 will be a slightly more relaxed affair, with a focus on providing a space for attendees to socialise, relax, and reminisce about STC. We'll also have plenty of art supplies for creative boomers to draw their favourite STC characters!
We already have a special guest or two lined up and hope to have more to announce as we get closer to the event, so keep your eyes peeled for more information on guests and meet & greets!
We'll also have a whole load of 'humes' (writers and artists of Sonic the Comic Online) in attendance celebrating 15 years of the online comic!
Manchester is an exciting and vibrant city with a scene full of creative types and video game and comic book fans! It's also easily accessible by train from both the north and the south of the United Kingdom via several main lines.
Our venue of choice is the amazing FAB Café, the world's first cult TV and movie theme bar! The café has the capacity for 100 attendees in the main area and is ideally situated in central Manchester about a 10-minute walk from Piccadilly train station. Check them out on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/fabcafemanc/
Manchester is an extremely popular tourist destination so if you're planning on staying over for the weekend, there is plenty of choices when it comes to accommodation, entertainment, and attractions.
Founder & Editor-in-Chief of Sonic the Comic Online
Organiser of STC25
Michael has been the 'hume-in-charge' at Sonic the Comic Online for the past 15 years and was also part of the organisational team for STCC in 2014. He's been an STC super-fan for the full 25 years, and still can't believe (and couldn't be happier) that the little UK Sonic comic that could is still going strong.
Michael is retiring from the comic with STC #275 - out this May - so this is also his farewell party!
The STC Online Team
In the past 15 years, the STC Online team has grown massively, and they are now a large team of super-talented writers, artists, and contributors - many of which have already volunteered for STC25!
There couldn’t be a team better suited for this project!
Why does STC25 need funding?
Organising a party can be an expensive business! However, we want to make STC25 an event totally created by the fans, for the fans! We are making 0% profit on this event, and all those involved are volunteers. This means that 100% of all funding raised will go directly into fuelling the event - the more we raise, the more fantastic a celebration we can create!
Here are some of the initial costs of the event:
The most important requirement! Reaching our initial goal would mean we can cover the total cost of the rent of the venue for the day, and gives us full access to the facilities.
Our costs also cover other items such as STC themed decorations for the venue and stationary for those who want to draw.
We hope to get some special guests from STC past and present to be there on the day. To be there they will be giving up their time to come and talk to you, the fans, and so we wish to be able to cover their travel, accommodation and subsistence costs as a thank you! Reaching our goal will enable us to cover these for several of our planned special guests.
How will we raise the funds?
Through Kickstarter, of course! We're aiming to cover our basic expenses from backers alone; our initial goal is very realistic, and we’re sure there are enough STC enthusiasts who would love to make this day happen. The event will be purely invitation only, exclusively to those generous enough to pledge to our Kickstarter cause!
We aren’t just offering invitations to the event, however. We have a whole host of awesome bonuses to those who donate very generously.
Check them out:
In order to reach our goal for this project, we’ve come up with some excellent incentives for those who become patrons of our cause! These include:
We want you guys to be part of this fantastic day! Many of our backer rewards include an invite to join us on the 3rd of June; the only way to attend STC25 is to help us make it happen!
A super-awesome STC25 band for every attendee at the event!
We have a fantastic tshirt* with artwork from Richard Elson and Pete Murphy to give to those who donate generously!
*May differ to final design
We also have grand plans for more fantastic event rewards and special guests which we plan to make as stretch goal targets… but you guys will have to help us get past our first target so we can make these dreams a reality!
Thank you for taking the time to read this Kickstarter page! We are really excited about what we have in store for the event, and we hope we can far exceed our initial targets in order to fund some of the other great ideas we have lined up.
Hope to see you on June the 3rd!
Risks and challenges
We have so much planned for the day already, and we have already pencilled in the date with our venue of choice… all we need now are the funds!
We don’t foresee any issue with event date of the 3rd June 2018, or the booking of the venue at the moment; however this may be subject to change if any circumstances arise that would mean it would be impossible to keep to those. Rest assured we would work to find a comparable venue if this occurred, but obviously we wouldn’t be able to refund all of your train tickets and hotel costs in the unlikely event we have to move the date (if you can, be sure to buy refundable travel tickets!)
You might have noticed we’ve not mentioned any special guests by name or gone into any detail about specific events on the day. We are at this very moment talking to our guests and planning, but until we’ve got a definite thumbs up, we don’t want to sell the event on the attendance of a single guest or activity and disappoint if the guest has to pull out of attending or the activity cannot take place.
We hope you guys will still be as enthusiastic about attending, whether we have one special guest or ten!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
