Mercury is a fully collapsible, professional quality modular guitar. It is designed for traveling professional musicians who require portability and versatility onstage or in the studio. It fits into a standard size carry-on suitcase, goes from parts to pitch in under two minutes, and requires no tools to assemble, so musicians can customize how their guitar plays, sounds, and looks onstage.
Ever since I started building guitars in 2013, I have dreamed of building what I regard as the holy grail: a fully modular guitar. I finally got the opportunity to execute my vision in my final year studying at Savannah College of Art and Design. For my vision to be complete, I decided the guitar would have to conform to a set of standards:
- It must be collapsible enough to carry on a plane.
- Every fundamental aspect affecting sound, playability, and aesthetics must be customizable.
- It must go from parts to pitch in under two minutes.
- No tools should be required to assemble or disassemble it.
- It must sound, play, and look as good as any other boutique guitar.
After nearly two years of spent effort and money, and by not compromising my original vision, I feel that I have delivered the evolution of the electric guitar: a truly travel-ready and totally customizable guitar that can outplay (or transform into) any other guitar on the rack.
Mercury is not just a guitar; it's a platform. With the right modules (and enough demand), there's almost no limit to what it can become. Bass, baritone, 7-string, headless, multiscale, and double neck instruments are all completely possible, and that's just the beginning. With the right support, it could feature more advanced electronics like amplification, effects, wireless output, or midi. Custom cases are also in the works.
I'm extremely excited to share this product with the world. I hope everybody else is as excited about it as I am. There is still a long way to go before I ship the first guitars, but with your support (and a little patience), we can make this a reality together!
Risks and challenges
I have been working on and refining Mercury since late 2016. In that time I have overcome almost all of the technical challenges and made an easy to use and reliable instrument that looks great, plays great, and sounds great. Now it's time to share this guitar with the world.
I can build these by hand entirely by myself, but the build process is difficult, time consuming, and tedious. Doing this at scale simply wouldn't be possible. That's where your come in! In order to create a sustainable business model, I need to get a facility, buy tools, hire and train staff, establish relationships with parts suppliers, and fine tune my production process. It's gonna be a few months before we start cutting any lumber, but getting set up properly from the very beginning will ensure that we can get guitars to everyone who wants one. With your help, we can make this real!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
