About this project
Carv is the first wearable technology dedicated to skiing that speaks to you as you ski - it’s your digital ski coach.
Inspired by Olympic technology, Carv gives you access to the feedback and knowledge that only elite skiers have had access to so far. With an extremely thin smart insert, Carv measures your motion and pressure distribution and relays feedback through your earphones in real-time.
Carv connects wirelessly to your smartphone to give simple, actionable feedback to casual skiers and detailed metrics and analysis for advanced and professional skiers.
Carv lets you train, compete and challenge people with its detailed metrics and helps you improve your skiing with technique analysis.
Become a better, smoother and faster skier. Ski position and pressure are two essential components of skiing. For every turn you make Carv analyses when, where and how much pressure you apply. Carv then speaks to you to correct your form in real-time on the slopes and later provides in-depth run analysis in the app.
Carv’s real-time coaching gives you feedback on your skiing. Simply pick a lesson or drill and set off. As you ski, Carv processes your data on the go and spurs you on towards becoming a better skier. Keep track of your achievements, and personal bests for each ski run. Challenge yourself or a friend to a technical drill and find out who is the most versatile skier.
Get technique analysis and metrics to identify where you could improve and keep track of yourself over time. Technique analysis helps you identify and iron out mistakes to make you a better skier whilst metrics help you track your performance.
Carv monitors your take-offs, landings and everything in between.
Analyse your tricks, flips, and pressure distribution to ensure you don’t strain yourself.
Whether you are looking to improve your skate-skiing or your classic propulsion, Carv helps you analyse your foot timing, symmetry and weight distribution to find out what could be making you lose valuable seconds or tiring you out.
From the outset we’ve always worked with some of the best skiers in the business. We’ve spent the past two years developing Carv with professionals to ensure that we stay on the cutting edge of skiing technology. Set targets for yourself and use our customised alerts to make sure you never drop the ball.
Coaches, if you usually use video analysis on your skiers, why not back it up with real data? You can record a skier using Carv and review the data using the Coach app within seconds. The data and video will be synchronised allowing you to really know what's going on.
Carv has been designed over several months, taking inspiration from current snow sports wear accessories such as customised insoles and boot warmers. The smart insert is thin (~1mm)and can be placed without affecting the way you ski. The insert can work alongside your boot warmers or custom moulded insoles.
The Carv tracker can be quickly and easily clipped and unclipped when it needs to be charged. It is small, lightweight and barely noticeable!
As you ski, Carv can help coach you by relaying feedback through your earphones. Pick a lesson appropriate to your level of skiing and Carv will analyse your technique and give you pointers and highlight mistakes you are making, be it as simple as leaning forward too much to transitioning your weight over too late in the turn.
Developed from metrics and analysis, get a single number that represents your level of skiing across different disciplines, surfaces and levels of skiing. Find out if you are as good as you really think you are and work towards getting better!
Can’t convince your friend that you are a better skier than them? Let Carv be the judge! Challenge your friends to a technical race to see who can carve 20 turns into the mountain the fastest or ski the furthest on one leg. Collect trophies for being the best skier in each resort you visit, or for improving your personal bests.
Carv gathers your turn data and presents you an average turn map. This gives you a general overview that helps highlight many common mistakes.
Carv is constantly tracking metrics of your ski runs. Carv looks at metrics related to your weight distribution, timing, the orientation and symmetry of your skis to a level of accuracy which cannot be picked up on a video. Giving you access to metrics that you have never had before such as your maximum edge angle, enabling you to really drill into your technique.
Carv helps you analyse your technique with intuitive visuals that let you review your ski run. With our pressure analysis screen, you can review your pressure through each turn. With our average turn analysis screen, we aggregate your turns to identify your turn style in relation to the timing of pressure application in the turn. Using this, you can see if and where you have bias in your feet or patterns that indicate possible areas of improvement.
Sync your GoPro footage with the data from Carv. Overlay your metrics and tricks and create your own action sports showreel!
Simply record another Carv user with your iPhone or iPad and Carv will synchronise the data with video within seconds, otherwise, upload footage from your own video camera to our servers to sync.
All your data is stored in the Carv cloud. You can access these from the Carv or Coach mobile or tablet app and the Carv web analysis platform. You can brag about your sessions to your friends or share them with your coaches with a simple link to get more feedback from them. Now you can take your ski profile with you between resorts to give people a primer on your current level of skiing.
If you feel at home messing around with a time series on a python or matlab console, you can look at the raw, unadulterated data from your ski runs. Simply export the motion or pressure data as a timeseries from our API and manipulate it to your hearts content. Who knows what you will come across?
At the heart of the Carv system are the sensor units under the boot liners. Each sensor unit packs 48 independent pressure sensors, designed to pick up minute changes in the pressure distribution. The unit also houses an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer which provides the Carv system with information of the motion and orientation of the skis. The thickness of the insert is designed to be less than a millimeter thick so as to not impact your skiing.
- 48 independent pressure sensors per foot
- 8-bit pressure measurement per a sensor
- Accelerometer (3-axis), gyroscope (3-axis), magnetometer (3-axis) (compass)
- Ultra-thin smart insert (~1mm)
- Operating temperature -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to 185°F)
- Charges through USB
- Battery life - 16+ hrs

Risks and challenges
We have been working on Carv over the past two years, splitting our development between London, China and the slopes.
Our mentors and time at HAX have helped us gain a massive boost into the chinese manufacturing ecosystem, where we have worked with our trusted partners to develop and manufacture our current prototypes. We shall carry on working with our partners to ensure a timely delivery.
We have tested extensively with professionals, instructors and skiers in order to deliver the best product we can. Developing our software alongside some of the leading researchers at Imperial College London.
Our industrial designers have helped us streamline our manufacturing processes in order to minimize any additional risk.
Kickstarter is all about bringing new and exciting products to market, and with your support, that is exactly what we hope to achieve.
The Carv Team
After the campaign closes we'll send you a survey asking for your foot and boot size to ensure you get a perfectly fitting insert.
Yes, Carv will ship with Android and iOS version of the app.
The features for Carv come for free with the product.
A Carv Coach subscription allows you to access raw data, video analysis backed by raw data and allows you to store these video sessions on our cloud which you can analyse on a computer.
The inserts have been designed to work with custom insoles since we are aware of how much people love custom insoles!
They are ~1mm thin and can be placed between the liner and shell or between the insole and liner.
Yes! We hope to make a snowboarding version of Carv for the 2017/2018 season. The hardware will be the same, so all you'll need to do is download the snowboarding app when it's ready. We plan on developing the snowboarding app over the next 12 months by working with professional snowboarders and instructors to understand aspects of technique Carv can read for snowboarding (exactly the same approach as we took over the last 12 months to develop the skiing technique algorithms).
